Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

This could be like them, or it could be like Starship Troopers which was a friggin joke.
Go watch the third Starship troopers movie, now that's a joke.

(That's a real song that is played in it)

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Saw an early screening of Law Abiding Citizen last night. Enjoyed the movie (suspending all belief, of course), though I will say that trying to speak American makes Gerard Butler's mouth do strange things.

Couple of things I wondered as I was watching: The lead power characters were almost all black. Would this have been the case if Obama had not won the presidency? It was just interesting, not good or bad. Also, not sure if it was just the make up of the audience, but people were awfully excited about the quashing of someone's civil rights.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I think that movie looks good...not groundbreaking but enjoyable!

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I saw Paranormal Activities tonight.

And I say this with a staunch record of laughing at horror movies: that movie is no joke. Very well done.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Wind Chill (2007): nice little thriller...

I agree. Never would have expected it, either -- it has all the marks of YDFC lameness.

In a similar vein, Dead End (2003) -- sort of like Wind Chill meets Six Characters in Search of an Author.

We, against my initial judgment, watched "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story". Very funny riff on biopics, and some of the songs were great. Set the DVR so I can watch it again.

Dewey: " I think I'm doing okay for a 15 year old with a wife and a baby." :D

Great movie.

That and Step Brothers are underrated, I mean, it's not meant to be Shakespeare but both are very funny watches.

"Get out of here, you don't want none of this!"

When the GF first suggested watching Walk Hard I thought she was joking, since her taste in movies is usually good and runs towards more serious fare. I'm still chuckling over the scene where Wife 1 catches him with the new wife. "Being married to two people is illegal!" "Even if you're famous?".

Agreed, I saw it on Wednesday as well. Very good movie, although Butler is only a marginal actor, and you're right, it was funny to try and watch him struggle to eliminate his accent.
You do have to suspend belief quite a few times. Several iffy plot lines, but overall very good action. A few "Holy ****!" moments, and a nice, if somewhat predictable, twist at the end.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I couldnt finish Walk Hard. I found it unbearable. I also tried to watch Semi-Pro. Same thing. Got about half-way through and just stopped. I dont even want to waste my time with Step Brothers.

Despite my thoughts coming in, Fired Up! wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It had some funny parts, lead characters had good chemistry.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Just got back from Where the Wild Things Are, I liked most of it, there were some seriously dark moments, but I do have one big gripe.

The ending, seriously, ***. There was so much lead up to the Wild Things trying to eat Max but in the end they change their minds for no reason. Max lied to all of them, failed to do any of his claims, and even laughed in the face of one of them. Where was the horrible gnashing of teeth? The roaring of terrible roars? Instead we get this nice send off and Max goes happily on his way home.

Step Brothers is the best of this bunch. There are a solid handful of great lines and a pretty tolerable plot. Good Saturday afternoon fodder.

Saw Zombieland. Meh. I really expected it to be a lot funnier. One sequence was fantastic though -- no spoiler coming from me, but those who have seen it will know what I mean.

Curse Of The Golden Flower:

Awesome story/plot. Lots of twists and turns, and each of the character's roles/desires/relationships are woven together quite well. Not a lot of action until the latter half of the movie, but that works because of the depth of the story, and the payoff is grand.

It should go without saying, given the last few movies of this nature (House Of Flying Daggers, Hero, Crouching Tiger), but the cinematography and the contrasting colors they use in the scenery is outstanding.

Not too much "arty" martial arts stuff (which was one thing I wasn't overly fond of in Crouching Tiger; thought they overdid it), and in fact there aren't too many martial arts scenes at all, which kind of surprised me.

Definitely recommend it.

Hero had a lot of artsy fights. Like that one over the lake was the last straw before two ******s who didn't shut up the entire time I saw it in the theater decided to leave.

I did love the duel in the Go parlor.

I know Hero had artsy fights. I didn't care for the lake scene, either, btw. And I agree on the Go parlor duel.

As for Crouching, it was the tree-chase scene that I really didn't like at all.
