New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

He was amazing as Stanley Goodspeed in The Rock!!! And he was fine in Gone in 60 Seconds.

I did not see either of these two movies, so I'll change him from an "F" to Incomplete (and given the diverse recommendations, I'll give them a shot).

Raising Arizona is a great example of a movie where I thought the actor was really cool because he was portraying such a weird persona. But then he does it again and again and again and oh, he wasn't acting at all, it's just him.

This can be charming (Lee Marvin) and you can even become a great actor playing "inside" narrow banks (John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart), but sometimes it's just boring and sour milk.

Cage was great in "Bringing Out The Dead" but I know that movie is not for everyone. Also, Tom Sizemore and Ving Rhames are hysterical in it. They brought a good balance to Cage's character.

I'm watching Family Guy: Its A Trap The 3rd edition in their star wars trilogy....I'm liking it a lot more than the 2nd one...i love how they point out all the little dumb things with the originals.

I loved the beginning with the scrolling text, other than that, meh.

Second one was better but there was some funny parts in this one...especially the end where they rip on Seth McFarlane for like 5 minutes ;)

I also loved how much Han hated Ewoks :D

The Runaways:

What a glossed over POS. Wanna follow the movie? Read wiki, and use your imagination to fill in the blanks. About the only thing they got right was the character of Kim Fowley (total scumbag manipulator). And what did Lita Ford do to piss Joan Jett off so bad? The only common link I can find/think of between this turd of a movie and "Edgeplay" (a Runaways documentary that Joan refused to even deal with) is Lita.

Now, Joan is real rock and f*ing roll, and so is Lita. But from what I've seen from these two movies, Joan is being a beech.

As for the acting, the acting is fine. I'm just so disappointed in the Hollywood version, as the real version didn't NEED glamorization. It was bizarre/wierd/whatever enough as it was.

Don't even bother with this movie. Honestly. Check out the previously mentioned doc if you want a real story of the Runaways.

For all you new True Grit fans, the second fave scene of mine from the original (the courtroom scene takes the cake, FTR):

The scene where Kim Darby and John Wayne negotiate is my favorite (I can't find it).

To this day all I can say is, "Glen Campbell. What were they thinking?"

Depends on what you expected. I liked it, but I didn't go in thinking it was anything but Hollywood after-the-fact exploitation. If it gets today's teenage girls away from the corporate muzak they listen to and into making original music that will make their parents worried and furious, I am all for it.

I knew they'd take some liberties, there's no doubt on that, but jeez:

1. Find girls.
2. Boom, band.
3. Lesbian scene.
4. Go to Japan.
5. Turmoil
6. Band done.

Yeah, that's about it. A bad version of Behind The Music.

Sounds like a pretty good weekend, though.

I finally got around to watching Amadeus. Brent, you were not kidding when you said Abraham's performance was brilliant.

Yeah, don't doubt me when I laud movies that are in my top 5. :p

That's one movie I can never tire of. All around greatness.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Finally saw the last major Mel Brooks film that I had yet to see - High Anxiety. A decent Hitchcock/mystery-thriller spoof, though definitely in the Producers/History of the World/Men in Tights tier, and does not sniff what I consider his holy trinity of style parodies - Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein/Spaceballs. Still, you can't really go wrong with it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

The only ones that didn't meet my expectations were The Good Shepherd which I found to be very confusing and quite frankly, boring

The fact that Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie bored you means the film did its job. The best of its kind. Period.

Best movie that was a waste of talent and was a cure for insomnia...sure you are correct ;)

I saw True Grit tonight...it was fine, that is about the gist of it. Not bad, not great just fine. I think, in grand Coens tradition, they tried to do too much with the movie when they really didnt need to. I probably wont see it again but I am not upset I paid to see it now. I think many critics are overrating it though, not that I am surprised.

How is it compared to the Wayne version?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I have only seen parts of the Wayne version...what I have seen the Wayne version is better.
