New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Still haven't seen Avatar, so maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding was it had a story, just that it was a highly unoriginal one (ie, Dances With Wolves in space).

Neither have I...but pretty much everyone agrees they put all the money into effects and then like the day before shooting said "Crap...uhh we need a story!" which is what I am getting at.

But the point was more to mock the Avatar suicides and the oncoming Tron nerdgasms! :p

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I wonder how man of our fellow boardmembers are at Tron right now? I have a feeling I will wake up tomorrow to 3-4 nerdgasms in here. ;)

Do you think we will get any "Post Tron Suicides" like we did with the last visually stunning yet story lacking movie Avatar? That would be EPIC :D

I managed to miss it by going out of town on business. My wife had to take my 13 yo to the free advance screening instead;). He though it was awesome. Like a blend of Iron Man and Star Wars he said.

Tron was exactly what I expected and exactly like the first one: stupid, but fun, so quite enjoyable.

And Michael Sheen can do anything.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Funny People.

NOT what I expected. While Apatow's "Knocked Up" was a funny comedy with a touch of seriousness, this movie was way more serious with a touch of comedy (I'm discounting the stand-up stuff, which was not really funny; just talking about the actual stuff relating to the plot). I really liked it. However, he still needs to learn that "less is more" with the dick and fart jokes. I'd say the middle third of the movie was the most quality; it makes you kind of realize what kind of experience celebrities go through, etc, and the pressure it can and does bring.

I definitely would watch it again, and do recommend it.

Showgirls is the porno equivalent to Superman III. So horribly bad, but so friggin' hilarious.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Funny People was horrible. Beyond the fact that it was not funny, pretty much the entire plot in the last half of the movie was just stupid. I swear, it was like they had no idea what to do with the script so they just tried the most ridiculous plotline they could think of to try and be less cliche. That movie was a waste of time which sucks because it had potential.

Rescue Dawn - I'm not remotely convinced Christian Bale is that good of an actor at all. I thought he was decent in American Pyscho and The Machinist, but I didn't enjoy much from him in The Prestige, 3:10, T Salvation, Empire of the Sun or Reighn of Fire. And of course the insipid "daark vooice" he uses when in the batman costume is annoying as hell.

I don't think it was SUPPOSED to be a funny (this said after watching it). It was marketed as such, though, which confuses me. It had comedic factors in it, but to me it was a serious movie, and I thought it was good. Not Oscar winning or anything, but simply good.

3:10 didn't really do anything for my thinking about Bale's acting abilities, even though it was a good movie. I thought he was excellent in American Psycho (actually saw that movie in the theaters before Bale was a big deal; became an instant favorite movie of mine), and very good in the Machinist. Except for The Prestige (very good job, but not excellent), I haven't seen those other non-Batman movies. And I agree that the darrrrkkk voice is annoying, but I think he did very well otherwise.

Edit: Steve Zahn stole the show in Rescue Dawn, FTR. Floored me. His 1000-yard stare was unreal.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Kick-***. Proved preconceived notions can be way off. I figured it would be entertaining at the most basic level, but it was much smarter than I gave it credit and it was the first performance by Nick Cage that I didn't think sucked in a long, long time.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

You only thought Bale was decent in the Machinist? Jesus how high are your standards?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Random question, does Netflix not allow, or possibly just from upon, changing your delivery address to have DVDs temporarily delivered elsewhere? Like in my case, I'll be back east for a couple of weeks and want stuff delivered there. I can see how some people might abuse changing the delivery address frequently to spread a subscription across multiple households, but as far as I can tell from the terms of use there's nothing explicitly forbidding it.

Not sure. I do know you can put your account on hold, not be charged and maintain your queues, settings, etc. We do this every summer as we generally watch a lot less during those months.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

What's the word on The Town? Watched it this weekend and liked it...need to suspend belief a few times but overall, I liked the movie...could be timing and nature of movie vs. the actual quality of the movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I think that Kepler has proven he has the worst taste in movies over the years so there is really no point in arguing with him :P

In general I was potraying an overall perception of him, but in hindsight "decent" perhaps doesn't give him enough credit for that performance.

I thought Cage was likeable in Valley Girl, Raising Arizona, Leaving Vegas, Gone in 60, Rock/Con Air, Family Man and 8MM, but he has arguably had several bad outings.

As for dumb humor, I watched The Other Guys last night and excpet for about a 10 minute stretch in the latter 1/3 I laughed throughout. I realize Will Ferrell is poloarizing but he makes me laugh.
