New High School Football Stadium in Texas: Have we lost our minds?

Re: New High School Football Stadium in Texas: Have we lost our minds?

I wonder how many of these athletes who end up transferring districts or schools are being paid under the table? Theres no regulatory body (as far as I know), like the NCAA to run tabs on these things and I doubt most high school districts have the resources or (in Tejas) the desire to run herd on things like that.

edit: The comments suggest the 119 million is for three projects. The actual price for the stadium is a mere 65 million dollars.
I don't know about Texas, but I know that MA, NH and NC all have state level commissions that govern high school athletics and who get the local school boards to enforce these sort of rules.

The people voted for it. If that's what they want to spend their tax dollars on, then go ahead. One commenter said this district is a receives money from the Robin Hood law. Not sure if that's accurate. From what I remember hearing about the law is the "Rich" districts pay for the "Poor" districts essentially. Here's the breakdown of the project according a commenter:

1. 1500 seat Performing Arts Center $23.3 million
2. District Transportation / Student Nutrition Service Center $36.5 million
3. Multipurpose Stadium $59.6 million
Total Projects $119 milion

They could've built themselves a nice hockey arena for that amount of money. 5,000 students at one high school is too large. I don't think any high school should be over 2,000 students.

Texas has two. Texas University Interscholastic League (public schools - NFHS member) and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (non-publics).

If you're curious, 3 other states have don't govern all the athletic programs in their states
Maryland
Virginia
District of Columbia

If they gave a **** about education, they could have built a whole 2nd high school. Then they'd have ~2500 students, each.

We're like Rome. We spend ever more money to inebriate ourselves with entertainment as we attempt to forget about the state of our society.

One school would still get screwed out of an education because they'd gerrymander the boundary to keep the football team together.

God, football, and family.

And not necessarily in that order.

Welcome to Texas.

Re: New High School Football Stadium in Texas: Have we lost our minds?

What do you think the Texans were saying when Agganis went up? Or Englestad? Or Mariucci? Can't you just hear them? "They're spending how much on a building that they're going to get so cold the floor freezes?!" Friends thought I was crazy when I started motorcycling. Last summer I bought an old classic for $650 (well, $560 and a pile of beer.:D ), then took it to a shop and dumped three times that into it? It's a wonderful little bike, but it's not worth anywhere near what I've got into it. Some of you would call me crazy for "wasting" my money on "just a motorcycle." But I've learned that we all have our hobbies/pasttimes (college hockey come to mind for anyone) that friends, family, and colleagues think we're crazy for spending our money on. But they have the same sinkhole, only theirs is different.

So, some football-crazy town in a football-crazy state wants to spend $60 MM on a stadium? I say, great! Go for it!

While you make a good point about pass-times, I think the situation is a little different here. I a pretty certain that if a HIGH SCHOOL was spending that much on a hockey rink, I think most of us would question the sanity of the town the HS is in. For that matter, if a college or university in Texas was spending that on a college stadium we probably wouldn't have a whole thread on it.
