New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

Congrats to BC on their first HE Regular Season title since 2005. I don't see how they lose at the Whitt. Faster, harder working, and far better puck sense. Posts and Digi kept the game close, but at no time watching that game did you ever get the sense that UNH was about to come back.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

Tonight was an amazing difference.

BC - smart, well positioned, crisp, moving their feet, strong on the puck, and calm.
UNH - dumb, very dumb, lazy, standing around, bunching, always chasing the puck, not working, out of position, did I say really extremely dumb

Several plays stand out as problems; too many to count actually. In the 3rd to BC player deep in UNH zone, 4 UNH defenders back yet somehow a BC forward comes of the wall skates through the faceoff dot between two UNH defenders receives the pass and gets a quality bid. Or DeSimmone nicely sets up a BC 2 on 0 down low well BC was short handed. Or every UNH power play, dump the puck 4 guys set up and watch on fight to BC D-men for the puck which was to be cleared shortly. BC played well but it was all the unforced stupid turnovers that was the real problem.

Pathetic really!

How can a team be that unprepared to play?

Yes BC is quicker but you slow that with some physical play. Really this game had no checking to speak off.

When I said I was OK if they lost as long as they played a game that got them ready for the playoffs, this was exactly what I didn’t have in mind.

The UNH players should be ashamed of themselves.

Couldn't agree more. BC's a better team, but are they really THAT much better? That was embarrassing. Why show up if you're not going to play.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

A couple of you UNHers have pretty much summed it up. Very underwhelmed by UNH tonight. It's as if they said this is BC's senior night, we'll just show up tomorrow. I would certainly expect a much better performance from UNH in Durham. And really, I don't think anybody should be surprised if UNH comes back with a win. In any event, BC has been chasing UNH all season and is finally in position to win the title during the last game of the season. That's all you can ask for. More importantly, BC can't finish lower than 2nd and will not have to play Maine or NU. Ideally, Providence would sneak in...

This is not a commentary on his play this season, but man, does Digi struggle controlling pucks like that all the time? He looked very shaky despite finishing with a lot of saves.

Only four penalties each...that was refreshing for a HE game.

A shame tomorrow's game won't be on TV...

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

Is Craig Janney as dumb in real life as he is on TV? Mind numbing. Kudos to a well prepared BC team who showed up prepared to kick butt and did exactly that. Worst performance I've seen in a very long time from UNH. I hope they can erase this memory with a good game tonight.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

Congrats to BC for an outstanding game.
I must agree that UNH played poorly. No analysis or speculation. And I'm still searching for an adjective to describe the power play.
Regardless, UNH needed two points this weekend to win the RS. They're at home tonight. BC's games against NU show they can be scored upon and beaten. It ain't over yet.

absolutley not over though some of you think so and have too much of a defeatist attitude.come on guys! 'cats bounce back tonight and play well . i had a couple rows of UNH students in front of me and they were just great, interacting and chanting back and forth with a group peewee hockey players in the next section. nice to see but i've come to expect that from UNH fans, nice group of young people

The defeatist attitude has been acquired honestly. With so many big losses mixed in with big wins over the years, the losses get amplified.
Last night's game is over and there's another opportunity tonight. It's hard to imagine BC playing any better than they did last night. But, let's not forget that they didn't exactly play lights out in the previous four games:
NU 7-7 tie.
NU 1-2 loss.
UMass 4-3 win.
UMass 2-1 win.
Just last weekend, UNH took 3 points from NU and they earned 5 points against UMass this season.

Last night was BC's senior night and they were in a must win situation - that is, if they wanted to win the Regular Season title and have a chance at earning the #1 seed in the Hockey East Tournament. They rose to the occasion big time. Tonight is UNH's opportunity - let's see what happens.

BC seemed to be reading all of our plays really well. Everywhere we wanted to go they were there and there always seemed to be a guy on us poking the puck away when we were in BC's zone. They played a good game.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

The problem for BC is very simple. They do not play well at UNH and it is hard to beat a good etam back to back.
Is Maine better than MC? No, but they are at Alfond. Is UNH better than BC? no, but they are at UNH

They haven't lost at UNH in their last 4 games, and UNH hasn't played well at UNH in a long time...

I know that, I am talking about as a program historically.

I expect BC to win but anything can happen, just like last year.

BC's game plan was no accident.

well if you go by history, Merrimack would never win a game ;)

BC played a good game?!?!? Hardly! They were extremely unsportsmanlike all night long. They played keep-away with the puck, and hardly let us touch it. And then they kept shooting at our goalie. Our goalie! What did he do to deserve that? They even shot the puck at their own guy, and broke his jaw! No, they didn't play fair at all, unlike us, who were willing to share the puck and not try to hit any of their players. Nice guys, if they don't finish last, don't finish first, either.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

bc wins.

jerry is everyone's nicest grandpa... but he is competitive as anyone else in the game. he is going to win tonight to add their three possible trophy to date (leydard christmas tourney, beanpot, hea regular season). then add the hea tournament and ncaa tournament so he can show his buddy he did it too. (since he hasn't done it yet)

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

So, were the three UNH seniors playing together again for the last few shifts an indication that the Paul Thompson on third line experiment is over?

Not much more to say, other than BC fans kicked me in the spine and tailbone the entire game; not a pleasant game to attend.

Yea, yea... then maybe someone will write a book... "Build The Canoes"... or something like that.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College - Mar 4/5 - Battle for Top Seed

I'm not trying to be defeatist, just realistic. The optimist in me will be rooting for UNH to win tonight, but having watched these two teams over the course of the season, I have to admit that BC is just better. No real shame in that. As the season went on, I felt that UNH was one of the top teams in the conference, and they still are, but BC is just better.

I know that, I am talking about as a program historically.

You're right. Historically, BC doesn't do well at the Whitt. However, what connects this team to those of 5-10 years ago? Certainly not the players, who might know the team's record in the buidling, but certainly aren't worrying about Darren Haydar scoring the OT game-winner again. So, really, it's just the coach. A coach who is considered one of the best in the game, especially at making adjustments and learning from past mistakes.

I'm kinda thinking it's time to throw history out the window.
