New Hampshire vs. Boston College Fri Jan 11/Sat Jan 12

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College Fri Jan 11/Sat Jan 12

Do I look like a Terrier to you?

well, let me see. Maybe I'm mistaken. What is written in rainbow colors at the bottom of your posts? If it says "Boston University 2014" like it looks to me, that kind of makes you a Terrier, no?

I know. I just wanted to be able to scroll down this thread and see the rainbow everywhere I look.

Lock thread? There's still hundreds of potential posts of awesomeness that could be achieved here before that happens!

I'm relaxed and over the loss--as I said, this was a good weekend for BC. I was over it when it happened. I don't consider BC's loss an "off night". That would be what happened out at Minnesota or at home against Yale. But, this is a consistent style of posting from what I remember of you. Anyway, again, I am not saying that UNH didn't outplay BC Saturday or that they didn't deserve to win. I will, however, maintain that BC undoubtedly has more top end offensive talent than UNH. On the other hand, UNH has more scoring depth. So in that regard, it's a very intriguing matchup.

BC has the #2 PP in the country. UNH is tied with Alabama-Huntsville. You're right about the UNH PK though. Outstanding...#1 in the nation.

J.D. how can you say a split is a good weekend for BC? Shouldn't a BC team with "undoubtedly" superior talent have taken 3 or 4 points for it to have been good weekend?
You can deflect all you want but BC did not demonstrate to me any superiority of talent at all on saturday night. Were you at the game? I was. Who gives a crap anyway? The games that really matter are later for both teams. And you can throw out the PP and PK stats. BC may have the #2 PP in the country but it didn't mean squat saturday. They looked absolutely anemic against the UNH PK.

He said they undoubtedly have superior top end talent and UNH has more depth. How can you argue with that? Seems like you're getting fired up over nothing...

Ya, there's no point going back and forth with e.cat

He/she just wants to soley base everything off what they saw Saturday night. I didnt even say bc was better than unh. BC has more top end talent which is why they also have a better PP. I also think milner is better than desmith. Unh is a better defensive team and has a better PK and more scoring depth. Pretty evenly matched.

I think you hit the nail on the head as far as how these two programs approach the results.

BC fans, for the most part, are not happy with a split at all.
UNH fans are elated and are ready to throw a parade.

That pretty much sums it up.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College Fri Jan 11/Sat Jan 12

I am happy with the split because it's only January and BC was coming off two really poor performances. Nothing more than that. Obviously I was still disappointed they gave up a late PP goal to lose Saturday night, but I'm not looking at the final score from Saturday in a vacuum. The overall play from the weekend was much better than the two previous games and it was against a very good opponent.

Agree ... agree ... agree ... wish I could agree. I think in the theoretical "if they played 10 times" BC wins 7. When UNH plays their team defense for 60, they can play with anyone. I just don't believe it's inherently who they are. They have to think about it and work at it. I recall MSU of eight or so years ago being a team that was all defense all the time. They couldn't NOT play that way. UNH showed Friday that they can easily slip out of their defensive shoes. If they continue along this path for a couple more years, it may be engrained to the point of becoming their identity. That's just kind of hard to envision with a Dick Umile team.

Ne'ertheless, this year's edition of the 'Cats has thus far delivered much more than anticipated. It's not hard to believe they will find themselves at the Garden, and Verizon a week after that. I assume BC will be there as well (Garden that is). Go Team.

Not the only reason BC has a better power play... UNH's power play is just so stiff, and predictable. It seems to be getting worse. Early in the year they did some other things, movement with a 3 man game on 1/2 the ice, and cutters from the other side. They also ran a true umbrella setup with a guy at top of the crease and a guy high between faceoff dots and the 3 plays in an arc above. It was fun to watch the different sets and it had teams on their toes. Now they are back to a power play where if the PK is just a smart box UNH is not likely to get anywhere other than a point shot that is likely to hit the guy right in front of the shooter.

Talent helps but UNH's trend toward standing around with slow stiff passes around the box isn't helping.

As for the topic of Milner vs DeSmith: Is it talent or experience at this point? Milner has had struggles but now with experience and refinement of his game he is a really good goalie. Does DeSmith not have the talent or just not refined by time yet? I don't know interested in others thoughts.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College Fri Jan 11/Sat Jan 12

I have nothing bad to say about DeSmith. Has great numbers, but also a better defensive team in front of him. Only being a sophomore, I would think you guys are extremely happy with him. Knowing that Milner was able to play his best hockey at the right time of the year is why I would give him the edge. It looks like this year, we'll get a glimpse of what DeSmith has to offer. So, in that regard, it's a tough comparison. But I'll take the known over the unknown.

Milner really has been incredible this year. Every since he got benched last year, he's been on another level that I never really imagined he was capable of. You wouldn't know it from his numbers this year, but he's been razor sharp all year long. If not for him, BC would be a mess right now. This season has been similar to the early playoff stretch he had (particularly vs. Umass in the QFs) last year where he held down the fort while the team took a while to get things going in front of him.

Put an average goalie in net with this team and I'd say BC is probably .500 or below.

Re: New Hampshire vs. Boston College Fri Jan 11/Sat Jan 12

J.D. I guess you were not at the game saturday, eh?

I have already said this but I'll say it again, BC may have more talent than UNH (top end-whatever that means!, bottom end, middle end) I just didn't see it saturday. I will say this, if in fact they do have more talent than UNH it did not jump out at me save for maybe Milner. He did jumo out at me but like JB says maybe it's experience not talent.

Have a good day:D
