NESCAC '15-'16 season

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

NSN has solved whatever webcast issues plagued them at the start of the various women's hockey games! The Panthers seem to still be on the bus, as Colby is really taking it to them in the 1st at Alfond! Shots are something like 16-3 and the Mules begin the 2d on the powerplay. Neuberger looking good between the pipes for the Panthers.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Colby 1 Middlebury 0
Goal by K McLaughlin
Panthers showing a bit of life after the Mule goal but have yet to solve Crites in net for Colby

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Final Midd 2 Colby 1 Shots 29-23 Mules Neuberger really kept the game within reach for the Panthers and then Midd cashed in 2 goals in about a minute for the win.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Well, since I don't see Conn getting swept by Hamilton even away and Amherst can't possibly lose twice to Wesleyan, I'm thinking really only two series matter this weekend:

- Williams - Middlebury - Williams needs one point to clinch 4th place and Middlebury needs all 4 to clinch 1st place (Amherst holds the tiebreaker right?) - the Friday game should be a doozy - I have no idea who to pick as both teams are inconsistent this season (Williams wildly so). But I will note that other than Amherst, Williams hasn't been swept this season in a weekend, so I think they have a pretty good chance at picking up the point they need probably on Friday.
- Trinity - Bowdoin - Bowdoin's Coach O'Neill can do William's Coach Gillis (teammates when they played together at Bowdoin) a favor this weekend by getting at least a tie off of Trinity which will knock them off the 4th place race. More selfishly, if Bowdoin can pick up a win and a tie they move ahead of Trinity into 6th place and avoid Amherst and Middlebury in the first round - that's the real incentive. Home ice advantage to Bowdoin, but I still think it is a split (Bowdoin and Trinity equally inconsistent).

Here is a link to the NESCAC tie breaking procedure:
http://nescac.com/sports/wice/2015-16/championship/information
Conference wins is first tie breaker, followed by record against the top 4 finishers (two of which will be Amherst and Middlebury). There is no tie if Amherst has more wins (as in Amherst sweeps Wesleyan and Middlebury fails to hold serve against the Ephs), but if both Middlebury and Amherst win out doesn't the Panther 13-0-3 top the Purple and White 13-1-2 (that last :10 and the Bourque goal at Bowdoin could be the killer)?

The way Williams plays [up or down] to the level of competition they face.... I would not be shocked if they beat Midd this weekend. They have good team speed and if their forwards can get to the front of the net, they can score. In a tight game, they have the advantage between the pipes.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Things are a bit clearer on the last day of the NESCAC regular season, Amherst and Middlebury are in a dead heat for top seed with the Panthers ahead by a half game. Conn and Williams and playing today's games to determine the third and fourth seeding order. Trinity, Hamilton and Bowdoin are playing musical chairs with the fifth, sixth and seventh spots still to be established and Colby travels to the one seed next Saturday.

So now that Trinity has won, you're sure that Williams holds the 4th place tiebreaker over Trinity? Based on conference wins?

Also, you have to hand it to Hamilton picking up two ties against Conn. Conn doesn't look nearly as dangerous after this weekend. They get a third chance to beat Hamilton in the quarterfinals but down in New London.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Big game atmosphere at Kenyon tonight with arch-rival Williams visiting to close out the NESCAC regular season. It was Senior Night, and knowing that Amherst had dispatched Wesleyan earlier in the afternoon, it was a must win playoff game vibe, with the #1 seed hanging in the balance. The Panthers responded with their most prolific scoring of the season to back a shutout by Neuberger (8 saves in 40 minutes) and senior net minder Dreher (9 saves in 20 minutes). Winslow had a goal and 3 assists, with six other Panthers lighting the lamp.
The 1st ended with Middlebury up 4-0. The game winner came with Winslow working behind the Eph goal, feeding out, up from the right corner to Wardwell at the blueline; she passed across to Quirk for a shot from left point that made it through traffic, took a weird hop and was in low to Williams goalie Mini's gloveside. St. Clair scored a minute or so later when she was able to wrap around and beat Mini at the short, stickside post, with assists to Hickman and Jackson for their work grinding down low. Seconds later, with Young and Winslow cycling in the left corner, Winslow passed out to Lafontaine on left point and her drive made it 3-0. Fourth goal of the 1st came on the powerplay; the puck passed from Lafontaine at left point across to Laven on the right and then down low below the goal line to Sherman; her centering pass was tipped by a D and flipped up and into the net.
The lone goal of the 2nd was scored on the powerplay. Marotta passed across the blueline to Wardwell at right point; she fed Winslow on the right half boards, Wardwell broke into the high slot and took a return pass for a wrist shot that beat Eph goalie Mini 5 hole.
Winslow scored her 13th goal of the season to make it 6-0 after the 3rd had become a bit helter-skelter. Wulf moved the puck out of the D zone to Young breaking through the neutral zone and in on left wing; Winslow was to Young's right and took a pass in the high slot, flicking a quick wrist shot into the net 5 hole. A third powerplay goal closed out the scoring. Jennings on left point moved the puck across the blueline to Marotta for a drive that made it on net through traffic; Mini made the initial stop but Hickman dug home the loose puck from the top of the crease.
The win secures the Panthers the #1 seed for the playoffs and they face Colby next Saturday at Kenyon.
Bowdoin will travel to #2 seed Amherst, Hamilton will play #3 Conn College in New London and Trinity will face #4 Williams in Williamstown.

Thoughts on the Quarterfinals this weekend...

Middy should handle Colby easily, but they did play 2 one-goal games recently...I could see an OT nail-biter in VT.
Amherst should have no problem dispatching the Poo-Bears.
Conn's offense struggled at Hamilton last weekend...if they get back some injured players, Conn should prevail at home.
Williams is really limping into the post-season...I've said all year that Trinity is dangerous...Trinity moves on.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season
