Middlebury is atop the Division III world after finally knocking Williams off the top pedestal finally as the Learfield Sports D-III Directors' Cup champion. The NESCAC continues to flex its muscles at the top of this thing every year year with three in the top five and five in the top 16.

I'm looking forward to continued progress. Building on a positive season, and dealing with the loss of some high quality seniors, whose contributions on and off the ice will be missed.

Looking forward to seeing more of you around the rinks, too, especially mid Jan, or so. ...

New Frosh goalie coming in. Very, very solid. Will start immediately.

Also new Frosh defenseman [LM]. Will be best player on the team from day #1.

Wes got very lucy this year and may be able to build on these two recruits.

LM is the real deal. Serious D-1 talent. 5'11" and can skate [4 time Nat Camp selection]...and shoots as hard as the boys

I have a feeling the Frosh goalie [Andover] will not be riding the pine.

I do not know LM, but it is hard to imagine that a "serious D1 talent" would be going to Wesleyan (unless this is a legacy situation or she has some unique academic interest that they satisfy). It is a great school in a great league (she must be a good student), but there are many better places in D3 for a "serious D1 talent" player that are as strong academically.

Have seen both Corvi and Andover play. Corvi is very strong and would guess she likely will continue to be the primary starter in her senior year. Andover is very good and sets them up for 3 more years of strong goaltending (the Andover team she played on this year was horrible - she must have set some sort of shots on goal/saves record). I do not know why Andover cannot field a more competitive team given their incredible facilities, reputation, and orientation towards athletic success - seems to be a long term issue in women's hockey for them.

Just wait and see...both will impress. And D-1 talent is indeed what you will see from LM [yes, legacy].

...and I would throw in Bowdoin (for sure), Trinity (for sure), Hamilton (debatable), Williams (debatable), Colby (debatable), and Conn College (debatable). Wesleyan has been a bottom dweller for some time in the NESCAC and is only in the middle of the league academically (it's still a VERY good school to be clear) - pretty much every NESCAC school is better hockey-wise and most comparable or better academically.

Some would make an argument for Elmira as well, but I'll leave that for others....

For any athlete looking to play hockey in college, "better" is a calculus of fit, among the hockey program, the academic program and the school's culture (location, size, liberal/conservative, etc.).

For starters, I think you've underestimated Wesleyan's academic profile, and it's different from most of the other NESCAC's, as a University with grad programs. But that's open for debate, and as was said in an earlier post, a lot depends on the specifics of what the student athlete is looking for. Amherst is not going to be a "better" choice for someone who wants to go into nursing, for example. (Not even sure if Wes has a nursing program, come to think of it...)

As for culture, is Middlebury, Hamilton, Bowdoin or Colby a "better place" for someone who doesn't want to be in the middle of nowhere? Trinity for someone who doesn't want the urban environment?

And, from looking at a lot of hockey programs over the years, it's an oversimplification to say that one program is better than another, based on W-L records. Players make school decisions all the time, based on whether they thought they could (or would want to) play for a particular coach. And that coach could leave, as we've seen a lot in the past couple of years.

I respect that you made clear that you have high regard for Wes as a school, but I think in all fairness, you were selling them short. I think it says a lot for the school and its hockey program that over the past several years, they've been able to attract quality student athletes, so that we're having this discussion.
