Nescac 10 - 11

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Led by Vitale's self described "Gordie Howe hat-trick" (goal, assist and a fight-well actually co-incidental roughing minors late in the 3rd) Amherst skated to a 3-2 win over Colby despite a strong 38 save effort by Colby 1st year tender Wheeler. Amherst scored in the 1st following a faceoff in the left wing circle when Baranek fed the puck along the corner boards to Hanlon who cirlced behind the net, faking a wrap around on Wheeler's stickside, she fought around the back of the net and slipped a pass to Vitale in the slot for the score. The Lord Jeffs extended the lead with a text book powerplay goal early in the 2nd. Swiontkowski pulled the draw back to Lloyd at the right point, she had space, drifted into the middle in the high slot and rifled a low slap shot past Wheeler. The Mules hung tough and drew to within one later in the period when Essman intercepted a clearing pass inside the blueline. She got the puck to Fisher at the top of the crease to Hu's stickside. Hu made the save, but Poulin was there to stuff the rebound home under Hu. The game winner was one of those "pretty" goals. Fisher and Vitale were working in the gloveside, right wing corner, Vitale got some space and walked out to the dot, spotted Campbell racing in on the off side and fed her for a one-timer, beating Wheeler up stickside. Amherst was applying relentless pressure late in the 2nd, and although peppering Wheeler, who appeared to be boxing the puck a bit, they were unable to break the game open. The 3rd saw the Mules score on a semi-breakaway 2x1, when Kane got the puck to Scarpato breaking through the neutral zone down the right wing. Scarpato drew the defender and slid a pass across to Simmons, who made a great effort in catching up to the pass and roofed it past Hu from the stickside edge of the cirlcle. The game seemed to follow the Lord Jeff pattern for this season. They dominate territorially and their forecheck is among the best; they allow the occasional offensive thrust (and score), but they just do not put teams away. You keep having the feeling they could suddenly explode on offense, but what better time than with the approach of the second season?
Round two at Orr will be this afternoon at 3 (and I hear the Junior Jeffs will make an appearance-wuff, wuff).

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Middlebury defeated Trinity 3-1 this afternoon in Hartford behind outstanding goaltending by Bloom (22/23 saves, which amazingly is a touch less than she is averaging this season in conference) and 2 assists from 1st year D Krakower. The game was fast paced and physical with lots of end to end action. My new favorite ref duo of Melanson and Zanetti let the game flow and seem to recognize the skill level has evolved to the point where it is not necessary to call a penalty every time their is contact between players. The Bantams had a bit better of the play in the 1st. The 2nd opened with Bloom stoning Weiss with a nifty stick save when she took a feed at the top of the crease. Middlebury took the lead when Marrison got the puck in deep to Woodward in the gloveside corner and she got the puck to Ugalde who snuck it under Bantam goalie Pujol from the top of the crease. Pujol made several nice saves to keep it a 1 goal game (robbing Ugalde with the right pad on a one-timer from the slot at about 4 minutes and Harisaides who had taken a long pass in alone deep in the gloveside corner only to have Pujol sweep her backhand attempt away). The game took one of those strange turns following a Bantam powerplay (which Midd killed using a 1-2-1 set with very aggressive forechecking). Styrbicki came out of the box and raced into the Bantam zone fielding what would have been an iced puck from Krakower. She spotted Ireland streaking in from the Panther bench alone and the slap shot from the right circle was rifled past Pujol up gloveside for a 2-0 Midd lead (and Ireland's 5th goal on the weekend). Middlebury extended the lead when Waters took a pass from Miner in the neutral zone. She received the puck with her back to the goalie and was able to spin, retain the puck and get in ahead of the D; her wrist shot from the slot beat Pujol, who got a glove on the puck but could not save it (2nd assist credited to Krakower on the play). Trinity got on the board late when Weiss took a pass from the stickside corner and beat Bloom with a one-timer from the slot; assists to Kleidon and Bauer.
The win enables Midd (10-1-1) to stay tied atop the NESCAC with Amherst (10-1-1) and should both run the table the conference hosting rights would be decided by coin toss. Both have 4 games remaining in the regular season. Amherst has 2 on the road against Bowdoin next weekend and then hosts Williams twice, while Middlebury hosts Hamilton and Conn College and then has a Maine trip the final weekend of the season (although Amherst will finish conference play a week earlier). Should be a typical NESCAC finish with much in doubt until play ends February 19th.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Per the Middlebury athletics web page the game against UMass-Boston has been postponed with no make up date announced.

My guess would be that there will not be a makeup game here. Middlebury has a free weekend the weekend after next, but UMB does not. The weekend after that will end the regular season for both teams and Middlebury will be in Maine, while UMB will be in VT and NH. The weekend after that will be playoffs for both teams. As for middle of the week games, Middlebury has Plattsburgh next week and Norwich the following week, and UMB has Williams on 2/15 (Wed). So it would seem this game will not be made up. Too bad.

Conference play is in the home stretch. This weekend I think Middlebury is 2-0, Hamilton and Conn College each go 1-1 (as in Williams is 0-2), Trinity beats Wesleyan and, in the most intriguing match up, Amherst beats Bowdoin twice up at Watson. The Lord Jeffs are out shooting opponents about 2-1 this season (691-339) and have taken 61 penalties to Bowdoin's 91. Special teams will, as so frequently happens, hold the key. Polar Bears powerplay is an impressive 20/69, while Amherst has coverted 20/77. The Lord Jeffs have given up 4 powerplay goals, while Bowdoin has yielded 12. I have noted previously that I have absolutely no handle on predicting this seasons Polar Bear efforts. Should they play as a team and up to the talent level on the squad they can give anyone a tough time, but I think Amherst has too much on the line (like matching wins with Midd) to take them lightly and the Lord Jeffs will win two close games.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Some of the refs set a new standard for inept on ice officiating last night at Watson, which I am sure was a frustration to fans and coaches of both teams. Komich is experienced and did a fine job, but was paired with Langelier (who displayed a lack of command of basic concepts) and a linesman, Leclerc, who was missing in action. Highlights included the Polar Bears getting the puck into the Lord Jeff zone with about 2 minutes left in the game, trailing 3-2, and being whistled for too many men when they got the goalie off the ice, a puck deflected off the crossbar and into the netting above the Bowdoin goal not resulting in a stoppage in play and the Amherst goalie clearly playing a puck which still resulted in an icing call...
Same old story: the players put their heart and soul into the sport and make major sacrifices of their time at rigorous academic institutions and REALLY DESERVE BETTER!!!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

I can't say I disagree with you. Sometimes they looks so disinterested. I have seen Parsons (I think that is his name) a few times this year and have been pretty put off. I went to the Colby Trinity game and was beside myself with the quick whistles he was blowing during scrums in front of the net where the puck was lose. My favorite though is when they are standing along the boards and there are players (and the puck) coming towards them. Instead of moving and kind of "flowing" with the play, they stand there and expect the play to go around them. There have been a number of times that the ref has blocked a clearing attempt by the defensive team. You can see it happening. It is like "get out of the way" and then boom, they get hit with the puck and just stand there. It usually just ends up allowing one team to prolong their offensive attack but I saw it result in a goal for the offense a couple weeks ago. I was just so disappointed. I am sorry you feel they affected the game that way. I hate when there is any focus on the refs because of ineptitude.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Congratulations to the Polar Bears and Coach O'Neil on their victory over Amherst yesterday in snowy Brunswick! Following an un-focused effort in Friday's loss, the team played under control and stayed out of the penalty box. They won the battles on the boards and were able to physically deny Lord Jeff forwards getting in close to goalie Connolly. Amherst shots were from long range and when there were rebounds they stayed out of reach. Bowdoin scored twice in the 2nd. Merrill won the puck on the boards deep in the left wing corner and fed it behind the net to Ludy; she faked coming out on Hu's stickside and then wrapped around inside the gloveside post and Hu's skate. The second goal came when Campbell got a pass to Merrill on the left point; her long shot handcuffed Hu and it snuck under her arm landing in back of her and Holtz popped it in. Amherst was able to break thru late in the game when Zukas shot from the left point rebounded to Clegg at the top of the crease, stickside of Connolly; Clegg's shot was then saved but the rebound was caught, mid-air, and flicked in by Hanlon's forehand, beating Connolly gloveside. Kudos to refs Little and Parsons for letting the game flow and their professional effort!
This marks the first Bowdoin win over Amherst since their first ever loss to the Lord Jeffs (and a goalie named Elek) in the NESCAC semi-final in Middlebury back on 3/3/07. The Polar Bears now are in the hunt for the #3 seed in the up-coming NESCAC playoffs. They face Trinity, in a game which may determine that 3rd place, next Saturday in Hartford.
GO U BEARS!!!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Big tilt tonight up in Kenyon! Time for the Panthers to make a move. They played Plattsburgh pretty close for a period+ before the roof caved in during the 2nd back in early January's 5-0 loss to the Cardinals. I was plotting a quick trip up to Midd, but, alas, I will be watching the webcast.
GO U PANTHERS!!!

I agree with Surgical on how this weekend will play out. Several contests are critical to the post-season conference tournament picture. Colby and Williams are battling for the #7-#8 spots, ie who gets to wander up to Midd in the quarter-final round. These two meet up in Waterville next weekend, but you have to think Colby has a better shot to finish #7 (trip to Amherst in the quarters). Conn College and Hamilton face off for #5-#6 up at the Russell Sage. A split will send them into the final weekend with Conn a lone point up and both of them play Trinity and Wesleyan that last weekend. I think anything could happen here; neither team has been consistent this season, although Hamilton has played a bit better down the stretch. I never like to under estimate the juice generated by the Eph-Lord Jeff rivalry, but I do not think Williams can manage to take a point from Amherst. The Bowdoin at Trinity game should be a good one. The thing worrying me as a Polar Bear fan is playing Wesleyan Friday night; in beating Amherst Bowdoin was under control and staying out of the box. Their game against Wesleyan in Watson two weekends past was as ugly a 6-1 win as you will ever see; offensive zone penalties, poor passing, no team dynamic, and they need to play the way they did besting the Lord Jeffs 2-1 (3 penalties), not the way they did losing to them (7 penalties for 2 power play goals) 3-2. The Bantams need the 2 win weekend to climb to 7-3-3 and have a chance to overtake the Polar Bears (then 8-5-1) for the #3 spot (I remember the number of conference wins is a tie break if points are equal). Trinity has Hamilton and Conn on the road, while Bowdoin is home to Williams and Midd the final weekend.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Can someone confirm the location of the Bowdoin/Trinity game on Saturday? USCHO has the game in Stamford, CT. Web sites at both schools appear to say the game is at Trinity. When I called Bowdoin's athletic department they first said Stamford but then said Trinity.
