Nescac 10 - 11

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Swiontkowski scored a highlight reel type goal to power Amherst into the NESCAC final against Midd. Trinity fell behind 2-0 early when Clegg fed Zukas up top at the blueline and her shot low gloveside rebounded to Lloyd who made a sort of change up attempt that slipped in 5 hole. Hanlon then roofed a backhand from the top of the crease off a Vitale shot from inside the right circle after Curry made a nice play fighting down the right wing boards and getting the puck in deep. Colman-McGaw got one back later in the 1st taking a feed from Weiss out of the right corner off a long pass from Ryan (which would have been icing pre-hybrid rule, but Weiss' hustle made the play).
The 2nd saw Trinity all over the Lord Jeffs with an aggressive forecheck making it difficult for Amherst breaking out. Colman-McGaw evened the score unassisted when she intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, broke in with 2 Amherst D back a drilled a shot from the high slot beating Murphy up gloveside. Bauer scored unassisted (for the 1st goal of her career) just as Amherst got a skater back having fended off a 1:16 of 5x3 pressure. Bauer grabbed a loose puck and had some space to launch a rocket from the edge of the left circle beating Murphy up stickside. Amherst tied things on the powerplay when Zukas passed to Hanlon who carried out of the neutral zone down right wing and fed Swiontkowski whose shot from the slot was in low gloveside.
Coach Plumer then made the decision to insert Hu in goal for the start of the 3rd. She responded making a nice save on Komarek's drive from the blueline early in the period and fended off the Bantam to earn the victory.
Pujol made a game saving save early in OT when Swiontkowski's pass from the right boards was deflected high by Evans only to be grabbed by Pujol. Swiontkowski ended the game when she snared a clearing pass waist high with her stick (decidedly not a high stick), controlled the puck drifted from the left circle across the slot and ripped a wrist shot that beat Pujol up.

How in the world does Trinity get called for Too Many Men THREE times in one game? First time in the first minute of play??

And how does the coach put a player in the box to serve the penalty after she's scored two goals in the game?

I'm not saying that Amherst got a gift, but wow, two of their goals were on the PP on bench penalties ....

Hmmm....

I've been silet all season, but today's results warrant a comment. Congrats to Middlebury! I think little Jimmy foo foo got his little pink panties in a twist, cut off the oxygen to his brain, and now he has the shape of an "L" on his forehead.

Maybe a continued silence (or however you might have spelled it) would have been appropriate.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Congratulations to Middlebury on their hard fought win in today's NESCAC final. Amherst did not relinquish their crown easily and should be proud they did not dial it in after falling behind 4-1. Great game!!!

Dad -- it's like I was just standing next to you with all your buzzing, but it sure looked like the Jeffs had been coached to shoot at the players entering and exiting the bench when given the opportunity. A persnickety official who thought the game was all about them might be emboldened to assess a penalty each time the puck hit a skate of a departing player as the entering player was leaping off -- hence the prolific number of calls against Trinity. If this was a tactic by the Jeffs (I didn't see the Trin-Amherst semi) then it didn't seem to get any attention with the game crew in the NESCAC final where they were allowed to play the game and not play games.

having played for Jim a few years back, and being a fan since, I know this isn't a "tactic" engaged by the Jeffs...it's possible that the flow of the breakout just puts the puck in that danger zone off of indirect passes... Bad luck for the Bantams, but certainly not a "game" played by Amherst.

After seeing the home town ref's in Hartford I think the girls have gotten use to getting away with it.. I even saw one Trinity player have her puck on her stick with one foot still on the bench and no call.

I saw this a few rinks, but have also seen it called when the play is no where near the changing bench or players.

Re: Observations on Trinity Amherst game and Trinity (by a Trinity Parent)

Trinity did well to come back from a 2-0 deficit early in the game against Amherst particularly as they have struggled to score as compared to last year (down over 25 goals year over year) and I thought they outplayed Amherst after that point.

The reffing was inconsistent at best and one-sided at worst. (Having seen 10 or more Trinity games and a comparable number of D-1 games live and many others on the internet the quality of D-3 reffing has regressed)

Amherst 's first goal was clearly directed in by a player's skate and her foot was moving (I was right on the goal line)-the refs didn't appear to consider the issue of whether it was kicked in even when several parents right on the goal line yelled-- and if replay was available they chose not to look. Trinity also missed out on a goal on a very quick whistle when the goalie could not control the puck and it went in underneath her.

Amherst had six men on the ice several times with no call and for the end of the game little was called and at least to some the puck WAS kept in by what certainly looked like a high stick at the end of the game--it was nonetheless a strong play by the Amherst Player.

The Trinity team including the strong senior class which graduated accomplished many positives over the past several years. They established a winning tradition, and had a number of firsts making it the Ncaa's and Nescac finals and beating Middlebury. Several players set new school scoring records during their four years Weiss ( most points and goals in career- and tied for most points in a season) and Komarek (most points in a season(tie) and most assists in a season and career) and an All-American last year.

It was a great four years and they all will be missed.

GO U PANTHERS!!!
I think Midd is tough against M-ville on the big Kenyon ice. Bloom has been a rock in net and the offense is firing on many fronts. Too much speed on the Panthers for the Valiants and Midd has a couple of players (Krakower and Pinsent) who are familiar with Cote (from Dawson days). (I am corrected that Pinsent did not play for Dawson, rather at Warner, and Krakower told her mom Cote had no weakness, which appeared to be true judging by the game she played losing 1-0)
Middlebury 3 Manhattanville 0

Re: Nescac 10 - 11/Interesting D statistics

Some interesting statistics among some of the top D in the conference.

Lloyd 32 points and plus 6 on a team that scored 56 even strength goals
Zukas 29 points and a plus 7 on a team that scored 56 even strength goals
Strybicki 20 points and a plus 9 on a team that scored 61 even strength goals
Komarek 16 points and a plus 11 (tops for D in the league) on a team that scored 45 even strength goals.

I am sure with three championship trophies on the shelf at Kenyon that third place was not what the Panthers came to Rochester for, but I would like to thank the Middlebury players, coaches and parents for making a fellow NESCAC traveller feel welcome!
It was a great season and I cannot wait to see all of you next year.
