Nescac 10 - 11

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Can someone confirm the location of the Bowdoin/Trinity game on Saturday? USCHO has the game in Stamford, CT. Web sites at both schools appear to say the game is at Trinity. When I called Bowdoin's athletic department they first said Stamford but then said Trinity.

The game is at Trinity's rink

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

When the Eph's Ensor lugged the puck through the neutral zone, took a long shot deflected into the right corner by Lord Jeff goalie Murphy, followed her shot into the corner and fed Bravi at the stickside corner of the crease for a goal at :40 of the 1st last evening at Orr, I am sure I was not alone in the fleeting thought that "OMG, there is some juice in this Lord Jeff-Eph rivalry!" Wrong...as the Lord Jeffs banged in 10 unanswered goals and sort of blew the Ephs out of the building. Amherst was clearly trying not to score once it became a 9-1 game, midway in the 3rd. The Lord Jeffs got big nights from the usual suspects (Hanlon, Zukas, Lloyd, Cleeg, Swionkowski and Salerno all scored multiple points) but McInnis and McBride notched their first career DIII goals (both with 2 goals, McBride added an assist) and Doyen chipped in with 2 goals and an assist. Hard to imagine what Coach Lye hoped to accomplish by switching goalies to start the 3rd as the Amherst forwards popped in 3 goals in under 5 minutes and tallied 4 goals on 8 shots for the period.
Williams has posted for a new head coach and they will face a daunting task in rebuilding a once proud program. One can only hope Williams is serious in their support of their womens ice hockey program!
Round 2 this afternoon at Orr.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Congratulations to the Polar Bears and Coach O'Neil on their victory over Amherst yesterday in snowy Brunswick! Following an un-focused effort in Friday's loss, the team played under control and stayed out of the penalty box. They won the battles on the boards and were able to physically deny Lord Jeff forwards getting in close to goalie Connolly. Amherst shots were from long range and when there were rebounds they stayed out of reach.

I apologize for being effusive in my praise of the Polar Bears and misinterpretation of their victory over Amherst. My revisionist opinion is they scored 2 pretty soft goals and the Goal God's caprice denied the Lord Jeff conversion of a number of quality scoring opportunities.
The Bowdoin effort up in Hartford this afternoon was disappointing to say the least. They took a series of penalties and managed to play shorthanded for a 5 minute stretch in the 1st and then took a too many skater bench minor following a powerplay. They did manage to escape the 1st with a scoreless game, outshot 12-6. The 2nd opened badly for the Polar bears when Guglielmi's dump in caroomed of the back board, was not played by a D at the side of the net and was shot past Connolly, across her body, stickside by Kohn. Weiss then effectively ended the game scoring on a breakaway. Players on the point should always be wary of Weiss on the penalty kill (note to Lozzi) and really take care of the puck, as in this case Weiss picked Lozzi's pocket and broke clear from inside the blueline in her D zone all the way in on Connolly, who backed into the net, and a couple of Weiss dekes later, ended on her (lefthanded) forehand, was joined by the puck. Guglielmi added an empty netter, assists to Kohn and Roloff, on a nifty shot from the neutral zone with less than a minute to go.
What does it all mean? There still appear to be endless combinations of what ifs involving seeding for the NESCACs. Williams could sneak into #7 with a win in Waterville Friday. Bowdoin may rebound and pass Trinity, but the Bantams can make Polar Bear efforts irrelevant with wins over Wesleyan, Hamilton and Conn next weekend. Conn could tie Bowdoin with 2 wins, should the Polar Bears beat Williams and lose to Midd, but their tie breaker (both are then 9-6-1, spliting their 2 head to head games) would be determined by Bowdoin's win against 2nd place Amherst (to whom Conn lost twice). Should Trinity lose to Conn they must beat Hamilton or they may finish #5 (8-5-3 or 19 points, but less wins than both Bowdoin and Conn (tied at 9-6-1). Bowdoin could beat Midd and take 3rd outright...but after watching them play today????????????

Re: Nescac 10 - 11/trinity v. Bowdoin

Trinity was clearly the better team today. The officiating was very inconsistent and a number of calls not made.

Lots of possibilities for movement in the rankings as the final weekend approaches.

Congrats to Kim Weiss for reaching the 100 point milestone. Also Scarpato of Colby and Miguel of Hamilton with 99 and 98 respectively. Lets hope they make it happen during the last week of regular season play! :)

So a logical conclusion would be that the Polar Bears showed inconsistency in Hartford compared with the past weekend's results in Brunswick. That does not necessarily take away from a win against Amherst. Beating a two time defending national championship team requires more than simply "luck" and the interference of the "Goal Gods."

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Amherst wins 3-2 in OT. I guess "luck" and the "Goal Gods" were on NEC's side...

I'd be more inclined to think, rather than the goal gods... it was Jim Tinnerella that decided the outcome of this particular match..

There were 3 penalties total called in this back and forth epic hockey game prior to that stinker being called. They were letting them play..why would anyone take it upon themselves to disadvantage a team, any god **** team in OT, with a call like that? I'll tell ya why...Cause their thinking.."It's all about me."

Epic Fail in two games that have important implications on a go forward basis!

...just another small item in the long list of things that must be overcome by true champions. You won't always get the calls, the ice conditions, the type of rink, the lack of bus legs and distractions, but I do think that both teams can rise above the refereeing and win when it counts (I don't think it really counts here...they're both in) -- win when it counts

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Wild one last night up at Orr! Hat tricks by Clegg for Amherst and Myers (a 4 point effort) for Utica. The Lord Jeffs were 4/8 on the powerplay with Clegg parked at the top of the crease deflecting shots from the points (on a shot by Zukas , from Lloyd-1st goal or a pretty play by Zukas feeding Lloyd sneaking down inside the right point D for a shot for Clegg to tip-to tie at 3-3) and feasting on rebounds (the game winner on a play by Lloyd from Hanlon-making it 6-4). Salerno potted 2 goals, Lloyd had 3 assists and Zukas and Hanlon both had 2 assists. Utica showed some firepower of their own. Myers scored on a 2x0 break, catching Lord Jeff D in deep and playing catch with Johnson down the ice and in on Hu, before chipping the puck in up stickside. Myers again tied the game (at 2-2) when she took a feed from Tice and came from behind the goal line to beat Hu inside the gloveside post. Johnson then teamed with Myers and Tice for a blast from Hu's stickside circle following a draw. The Pioneers again tied things at 4-4 when Gonzales drew the puck back to Roy, with her rocket from the point past Hu high gloveside.
Utica has 2 games at Plattsburgh this weekend and hopes to improve their seed in the ECAC-West playoffs from #6 to #5, but needs to pick up 3 points to accomplish that goal.
Amherst has now completed their regular season and await the outcome of this weekend's action up in Maine. Williams and Colby play Saturday and an Eph win would move them to the #7 NESCAC seed and a trip to Orr for the conference quarter-final. Middlebury plays Bowdoin Saturday and should the Polar Bears show up and knock off the Panthers, Amherst and Midd are tied for the regular season title (then decided by a coin toss) and hosting the NESCACs. Bowdoin has the talent, just not the consistent, controlled game, so I would not bet the ranch on Midd losing in Watson Saturday.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

You have to love the NESCAC...down to the final day of the regular season and there are still myriad possible outcomes in the standings.
Williams made a valiant effort agianst Bowdoin this evening, but came up short when Holtz took a pass from Tess-Wanat out of the neutral zone, down the right wing boards and then fought 1x3 into the slot on her forehand and roofed one over Eph goalie Nguyen's gloveside shoulder for the 4-3 game winner. Nguyen played a strong game and kept the Ephs in it until the end. Williams visits Colby tomorrow and the winner will earn the #7 seed.
The #2-#5 spots could still change...Conn beating Trinity and Bowdoin losing to Middlebury moves Conn into a tie with the Polar Bears at 9-6-1, but the Bowdoin win against Amherst would be the tie breaker and they would get the #4 seed. Bowdoin beating Midd and Conn beating Trinity would mean the Polar Bears finish 10-5-1 and the Bantams would be 9-4-3, tied with 21 points, but the 10 wins for Bowdoin would make them #3.
Middlebury clinches the #1 seed with a win or tie tomorrow at Bowdoin. A loss to the Polar Bears puts them back into a dead even tie with Amherst, both at 13-2-1 and records that exactly mirror each other (ie a loss to each other, a win and tie with Trinity and a win and loss against Bowdoin) so a coin toss would determine the higher seed and potential NESCAC final site.
I am not counting on the Polar Bears besting Midd, as the Panthers have been on a roll (notwithstanding the 3-2 loss to Norwich Tuesday) and Bloom has had an outstanding season in goal.
Should be entertaining in any event!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Impressive Middlebury comeback in their 4-2 win at Watson this evening. Down 2-0 after the 1st, the pace of the game was in Midd's favor, as the teams played something like 8 minutes without a whistle at one point during the period. The Panthers then scored 4 unanswered goals, and secured home ice and hosting rights for the NESCAC finals.
Bowdoin will have the #4 seed and host Conn College next weekend. Midd will host Williams, Amherst host Colby and Trinity host Hamilton.
