Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

Congrats on the win

Echo that. And thanks for the kind words, Minny fan. Unless we play you in the Final 5, it might be a long time before we see one another again. Who knows?

Tonight was similar to last night as the longer the game went on, the more the tide seemed to turn our way. Too many penalties tonight and they were the difference. One of the best games in goal I have ever seen Faulkner have, and, in a losing effort. We still haven't given up more than 3 goals in a game this season.

My comments would incomplete if I didn't say something about about the announcers that Fox Sports North uses for the TV broadcasts of Gopher hockey games. I don't know if they are employees of the school, or, otherwise, as I suspect, but those guys are an embarrassment to a fine hockey program like Minnesota with their proud tradition and history. Forget the blatant homerism, rivaled only by Ron Santo in his days with the Cubs before he passed away. These guys flat out did not do their homework and prepare to do their jobs.

I lost track of the number of times they either mispronounced player names or flat-out used the wrong forename for a player. "John Archibald?" (they never got that one right). Jaycob Megna became "Tony". Johnnie Searfoss was variously know as "Johnnie Seafoss" "Johnnie Searfross" & "Johnnie Seafross". Andrew Schmidt became "Alex". Those are just the tip of the iceberg. Fundamental misstatements of fact--many of them, and over and over again, like in the very first minute of last night's broadcast saying that UNO led the all time series 3-2, or constantly referring to UNO's new conference as the "National Collegiate Hockey Association", or, their misunderstanding and interpretation of UNO's intentions about their "name change" (they apparently read Roman Augustovicz's blog who is operating under the same opinion as they). Never mind that they completely overlooked the obvious, that we came out in UNO jerseys both nights despite our supposed insistence on being known as "Omaha". And on and on and on like that.

Don't even get me started on the "token chick presence" on the broadcast, aka as the "social media director".

You've got to be kidding me.

Gopher fan, you have a fine team and are one of the premiere programs in all of college hockey with a storied history that takes a back seat to no one.

Your TV broadcasts, thanks to what I can only assume are being done by what are just flat-out incompetent announcers, are bush league with a capital B. I can't believe that the school would condone employment of these utter morons. I assume they are FOX employees and you get "stuck" with them.

Hope to see you at the Xcel Energy Center in March.

Yes, the gopher broadcasts make tommy heinson look like a piker... But that's expected

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

These teams seem to play each other pretty even, and with good intensity. It's a bummer that they probably won't play many regular season contests again.

Doug McLeod, the PBP guy, was the Gophers first PBP TV guy. He left and called games for the North Stars, and most recently was calling games for the Coyotes. College broadcasters are supposed to be homers. They cater to their audience. Not sure on the other examples, but I never heard them refer to Archibald (a Minnesota kid they are familiar with) as anything other than Josh. Maybe they were talking at one point about his dad Jim?

Anyways, he beats the Hell out of LaPanta (our last PBP guy who is now the TV voice of the Wild).

Great series. You guys have a nice squad. Good luck the rest of the way.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

God ****, that was a battle tonight.

UNO is a good team. The game could have easily become very lopsided in score, but the Mavericks managed to keep it attainable and nearly pulled it off. In my honest opinion, their biggest problem tonight was undisciplined play that led to way too many penalties. I'll accept my home-team biases and leave it at that.

I'd also say that tonight was the first time this year I thought the officiating in a MN game was downright embarrassing. And it was bad both ways tonight.

At any rate, I'm glad MN doesn't have to play those ****ers again until possibly the post season ;)

I think tonight was a "growing up" game for a few of our freshman, and was a good chance for some upperclassmen to assert themselves into desperately needed leadership roles. Condon looked great tonight.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

That was a great series. I think those teams are more evenly matched than most thought.

And Red Cow, the Fox Sports North broadcasts ARE Gopher home broadcasts, essentially. They are homer networks. When they take those games, it isn't for a national audience, it's for gopher fans. If you saw that on NBC Sports or CBS Sports nationally, then I'd be worried.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

Per the FSN broacast team:
Keep in mind that McLeod has, all season, been calling Nick Bjugstad Scott Bjugstad (Nick's uncle and former Gopher player). If he can't even get the home team's biggest star's name right, why would you expect him to get the visiting teams' names right? :p

I absolutely agree about the whole "social media" schtick. But it's a sports channel. They target their audience, simplify as much as possible, and then cater to the lowest common denominator. It's typical mass media. C'est la vie.

Didn't see the game, but with Blais as UNO head coach and against UM you would expect an intense game. Good effort by both teams. 35 penalty minutes for UNO seems like a bit much. With all those penalty minutes and the UM powerplay goals either the officials and/or undeciplined play could be blamed for the loss. :(

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

As far as the social media thing, I don't like it either, but we all know social media isn't going away. So for what they are doing with it....well, it could be worse. Except for that stupid scan code thing. That's about as bad as it gets.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

I noticed that the refs seemed to ignore a lot of hand passes this weekend. And Zahn getting the 5 mm well we can't complain too much after benefiting from giving a few 5 minute power plays so far this year. I still say we'll finish 4th or higher in the WCHA this year.

Hey look at that, a Whioux? fan blaming the refs.

Re: Nebraska-Omaha vs. Minnesota. 11/30, 12/01.

As a UNO fan who has been to just about every home game in the last 6 years, I know multiple times we have been screwed by refs...sometimes leading to game winners by another team...but who hasn't at one point or another? I refuse to ever blame refs for a win or loss, it's always in the teams hands to make it happen.

I cautiously agree.
