nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

How many people used a sick day, just because they have it and can use it, and they are not really sick? Just sayin'.

Alpha error vs beta error. Some people want to make sure innocent people don't get hurt and are willing to be burned by free riders. Other people are willing to hurt innocent people to ensure nobody gets over on them.

It's two different ways of looking at the world and the most important difference between liberals and conservatives.

Yep.

In the end, and I don't know how common this is, one could apply for a "short term disability; illness," and it wouldn't count against PTO. The downside is you wouldn't get paid in full, IIRC, but I could be wrong about the pay.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

We have flex-PTO, so there's not much of a worry. Interesting, we also get two "floating holidays" per year, which when you have flex-PTO you don't actually need. So they pay that out each year which is nice. I asked my boss if I should be using the floating holidays before the flex-PTO and he said he isn't, so I shouldn't worry about it either. So that's nice.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

No, Rube, that's not a good way to do it. That is how my company (and most) does it, and it works exactly the opposite of the way you would want a benefit to work. It's leftover from an obsolete and unhealthy (literally) way of thinking. It punishes people for getting sick and then those people have no choice but to come to work and make everybody else sick.

In all honesty: do you understand the difference between "good for me" and "good"?

Exactly the same for me. I tried my best never to take sick time off. And I hardly ever get sick.

But try this one on for size — my company then went to "discretionary" vacation time off (though sick time is pretty open, so I’ll give them that). The problem with discretionary vacation time, which is marketed as unlimited vacation, is people are peer pressured not to use it. So you end up using less vacation (and multiple studies have shown this to be true). And vacation days are not worth anything. So, you never get paid for "unused" (because that concept doesn’t exist anymore) vacation days, and you don’t carry anything over because it’s "unlimited." (In reality, you need to get approved by high level managers if you go over a certain amount, which for long tenured employees, is below what they should be getting; of course new employees make out.)

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Lolololol. I would bet that is incorrect.

Yeah voter fraud is far less prevalent. That said, very few people actually abuse sick time.

And honestly, who ****ing cares? It’s someone who’s not a 1%er bilking a 1%er.

I have an issue with that. You're hired to do a job to the best of your ability. "Bilking" is not part of the agreement. Just because your economic classes are of different stature, doesn't give you the right to "cheat" (so to speak).

I just finished an article that said when testing begins in earnest it’s going to make it appear the virus is spreading like crazy when in reality it’s been that widespread for some time now.

I think that’s a given. It’s everywhere and we’re too inept to test as we should

If you want to know the moral depth of your relationship with your employer, see what happens the instant he can replace you with a cheaper option.

No, you're hired to do your job. They want the best of my ability, they better give me their best compensation. Otherwise, they get sufficient effort to get the job done and no more.

And seriously, who gives a flying fark if someone plays hooky unless it personally affects you in some tangible way. If management cares, they'll put a stop to it. If management doesn't care, why should you?

The 1% would set you on fire if it improved their bottom line.

That's the point. You calling in sick when you're not sick is not fulfilling the agreement.

We always use the floating holidays before vacation time because we lose them if we don’t use them but we can carry vacation time over.
