nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Would be more towards almost most than almost none.

“Calling in sick” is incredibly common. C’mon :)

Most people I work with will work from home when they are sick and almost never take sick days. I can’t think of anyone in my department of 50+ people that abuses sick time, but it’s a bunch of statisticians and software engineers that can work remotely if they need to...

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I accrue 6.67 hours of sick time per month but the max you can carry is 160. For a long time I was hovering at the max and essentially losing sick time by not taking it. So is that a good enough reason to use it despite not being sick? To be fair I try to manage it well and use that time for real things like dr apps for my kids.

I should add that in my job, if someone in the group calls in sick, their calls and work needs to be covered for the day. And I have a coworker who definitely abuses sick time and a lot of times I am the one stuck with their work for the day. And that ****es me off because I know they aren't sick.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Companies are looking for ways to avoid paying Vacation or PTO when employees either leave or are forced to leave. Look for unlimited PTO in the near future as long as it has manager approval. People end up working the same amount, but company will have no obligations to them when employment ends.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I don't understand the difference between accruing leave time and PTO. If you're not at work, you put in for it and receive your normal salary. What's the big deal?

I never had "PTO" in the U.S., we accrued time monthly that we could use for whatever we wanted. Here we accrue 20 hours/month, and any unused hours up to 160 are paid back every February. I've received the max payback every year since moving here.

Rube - you're being a d**k just to be a d**k. What other people do that has no bearing on you is none of your concern. If people abuse it they will eventually suffer for it because it will catch up to them and/or they'll never advance their position.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Mookie’s health ins emailed yesterday that all co-pays for testing are waived.

If you want to know the moral depth of your relationship with your employer, see what happens the instant he can replace you with a cheaper option.

No doubt.

The greatest advice I ever got from my father: "Take care of yourself, because the company won’t."

Exactly what my company has done, and they are fully aware they are saving money.

PTO is becoming more common. It’s a bit easier for companies to account for, putting everything in one bucket. The unintended consequences is people tend to take less sick time (thus working while sick) because they feel they are digging into their vacation time.

Now companies are starting to go "unlimited" (which it really isn’t) and not paying out anything if you don’t use it.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

He’s already blamed Obama for testing

And people are re-posting that as if it is fact.

Here's the thing- this isn't one of those instances that you can get away with blaming others very long, at some point actual leadership will have to take over to actually save the economy.

Then again, I don't think they have a clue about that, either. Nor do their supporters- they don't see that immediate pain (which is going to be really, really bad) is going to be better than the long term economic impact of dealing with another virus that appears to be more fatal than the ones we currently fit into the economic model. Lost productivity and deaths over the rest of time is NOT good for the economy. Deal with it now, or it will hang over the whole world for the rest of time.

This is where you're wrong. 40% of America will believe anything he says. And that's enough. He has one major network in his pocket and a media that is obsessed with talking about "both" sides. He should be being eviscerated in the press right now and the fact is he is not.

Who's being a dcik? What other people do does affect me and my co-workers (even though they are not at the same building as me nowadays). That's one less person on the floor working, making longer hours for the rest of us.

If we drop into a recession, that 40% may not vote in big numbers. And doing the simple math, that leaves 60% for the rest of the vote anyway.

Stupid people are stupid, sure. I don't see that everyone is stupid, though.

That's the point. You calling in sick when you're not sick is not fulfilling the agreement.

Sure it is as long as your overall output is satisfactory.

If person X can do in 32 hours what person y does in 40, who gives a shiat if person X plays hooky for those 8 hours. Especially if management apparently doesn't care.

I was in line at the supermarket and the cashier was visibly ill and coughing/sneezing into his sleeve.

At a supermarket.

Handling people's food.

This thread is quite scary

So, doctors, nurses, and others self quaranting, leaves a severe shortage of medical personnel just when they're needed most.
