NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

Re: NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

Should be a fine matchup between two outstanding DIII programs. I think I would have to tab the Cards as slight underdogs, but the one sure thing is that it will be one hell of a game!

Go Wick!

Re: NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

Last year, Plattsburgh State was the team to beat, and...they got beat by Neumann in OT...This year, the Cardinals are the Underdogs and I really think they will thrive being the Team that "shouldn't" win-it-all. Just got my tickets!!
Can't wait till Friday!!! GOOD LUCK to all 4 teams...Should be a great show!!!
GO CARDS GO!!!:p :D :)

Re: NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

NO!! Plattsburgh is not the BEST team in hockey!!! OSWEGO is the BEST TEAM in hockey and they "should" win-it-all!!! Right????? ;)

Honestly, having seen both teams play this season, I'd have to give the nod to Norwich. Oswego is deep, but Norwich is deeper. Musselwhite is the fastest player in DIII, but Oswego has somewhat of a dropoff after that, Norwich has maybe 5 or 6 who are faster than Oswego's #2. Norwich also plays a cleaner game in that the team is always on the same page, and they react much faster to different situations than any other team I've seen. I have no hesitation in saying that Norwich is the team to beat.

One of the biggest differences, to me, is the fact that Norwich has received a LOT of support from that freshman class (I lost count of how many times Derek said "that freshman class scares me"), whereas Oswego is still primarily relying on upperclassmen. That might actually help Oswego this year, but it will certainly be advantage Norwich in the next 3 years.

Oswego hasn't had much help from underclassmen. Well except conference player of the year Sophomore Eric Selleck (21G 32A) and conference freshman of the year Jon Whitelaw (11G 26A). Luke Moodie (13G 12A), Paul Rodrigues (7G 17A), and Tyler Leimbrock (9G 6A) didnt have much of an impact this year either.

But I will agree that Norwich does have a sick freshman class....

I think Cards was lumping Selleck into the upperclassmen mold rather than the freshman class.

I saw Norwich's freshmen. They are AWESOME.

Kyle Thomas is the best freshman hockey player I have seen in a very long time. All the tools...Really wonder how he ended up at Wick and not D-I somewhere.

Oswego's freshman are solid too. Whitelaw and Rodrigues have shown the ability to score some big goals in big games so it will very interesting to see how they matchup, if they do, in the finals.

Re: NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

Something I was just thinking about (and you knew it was coming...) -

Who starts in net for the Cards? Leis played very well against Middlebury, and did a pretty good job of fending off the Laker tidal wave in relief of Williams in the SUNYAC Championship. Of late, he's been the better of the 2, as shown by his holding on to #3 in DIII in GAA, while Williams dropped down to #9.

Also to consider: Do you start Williams for a third game against the Cadets, when he was so thoroughly picked apart by Kyle Thomas in their last meeting? Yes, their first meeting was probably his best game all year, but has become even more inconsistent of late.

Knowing these things, my money's on Leis. But Emery probably knows something that I don't, so who knows?

Question...has any team ever come to the Frozen Four and played two different goalies for the Semifinals and then the Finals? And I am not talking due to an injury...

Re: NCAA Semifinal: Plattsburgh vs. Norwich

Like it is Williams turn in the rotation?

Forgot to mention that. Knew that, and it's the reason I talked so much about Williams. As of right now, Leis seems to clearly be the better goalie. Rotation is the only reason I can think of that Williams will get the start. Not entirely sure that I like that reasoning in the Final Four, though.

Middlebury did this all the time.

2006 I know they did it. Can't remember if they did it in 2007 or not.

Boy, This should be interesting...I thought Leis looked very comfortable between the Pipes vs. MIDD and to go back to Williams at this point would be a mistake, I think. I think the players themselves would like to see Leis in net. I would like to hear what others think about this topic.

I Think we will see Leis

Last year, used Gustavus Adolphus in the semi-final against Wisconsin-Stout Matthew Lopes (first 2 periods) & Josh Swartout (3rd period & OT) and just Matthew Lopes in the final against Neumann. Though Matthew Lopes did leave for a back injury.

My thought: you play Leis again. Both goaltenders have struggled in recent games and the defense has struggled playing in front of both of them in recent games. On Saturday, Leis didn't struggle in net and the defense didn't struggle in front of him. At this point in the year, I can't see changing that. We shall see, though. Hard to argue with whatever Emery does, though - he knows this team a little better than I do!

He can't be too bitter with them after their Middlebury performance ;)
I think either way, if it is Leis or Williams, It will take a team effort to beat the Cadets...Plus, either way, We can second guess Emery if the Goalie plays terribly, Right?
