NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

I'm guilty of not paying close enough attention...but didn't this BC team have some very unexpected losses this season?

I wouldn't say their losses were ever "very unexpected" -- they are who we thought they were: a team with two All-Americans who is fairly average otherwise. They did struggle at times against the bottom of their conference.

They weren't close to Princeton without Stack and Schaus. During the Beanpot weeks, when BC beat BU & Harvard midweek, they struggled against Maine and UNH (6th & 7th in their league) the following weekends and went just 1-1-2, which is what we'd expect from a team with limited depth. They also struggled to match up with Providence at times this year.

In one game on their home ice though, with a week of rest, they're tough to beat. If this was a best of three series, I think Minnesota would win.

4-1 BC with 10 min to go

Play YOUR game. Work. Take it to them. Do not relent. Play through into their goal; play through into a victory.
Go Eagles!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

Congratulations to the Eagles -- by far the better team today.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

That leaves one WCHA team who'll make it to the Frozen Four. Could this be the year for an east team? Naaaa.

The rodents were just outplayed today and Raty wasn't on her game for some reason. Can't really point to anything else. There weren't a lot of whistles, only a few penalties, crowd wasn't a factor. Maybe it did come down to goaltending. Five more hours and we'll see who the WCHA sends to Erie.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

That was a disappointing end to the season. A season with a rough start but promising finish...until today.

Congrats to the Eagles for a solid victory! Good luck in Erie!

The off season is here for Minnesota...gonna seem like a long one me thinks.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

Congrats to the BC Eagles!! Nice win best of luck in Erie!! Stack without a doubt the best player on the ice, especially in the 1st period.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

Most of the story of this game occured 24 seconds in...minor league blunder by a major league player...looked like she probably lost focus on what she was doing and consequently the angle of the blade of her stick was the culprit...(follow the ball all the way into your glove)...they're human, it happens...the floor fell away emotionally and then on the scoreboard... and secondarily, UM's failure to keep up the number of shots on goal that they had tallied in the first period until half way thru the 3rd. According to the screen UM had 2 sog in the 2nd...not sure if that was accurate but it wasn't many.

Congratulations to BC on the win and to UM for a good season.

BU vs Mercyhurst sounds like it's a humdinger!

Genuine congrats from a BU fan, maybe now granddaddy scout can stop his whining about the wcha being the only good conference

Then who would CHA, HE & ECAC fans pick on?

IceIsNice would get pretty bored.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

That was pretty incredible. Did not expect that first period to happen at all! The weird part is, I thought BC played better in the 2nd than in the 1st, but the 1st is when they did all the scoring. In the third period it was all Gophers, but BC did a good job preventing any grade A chances. And whenever MN got a great chance, Schaus was there to close the door.

If they can play like that they'll be a very tough out for Wisconsin or Duluth. Wow. :)

Hope the Gopher fans who came east enjoy the city and the trip despite the game. I strongly recommend Italian food in the North End.

And no offense intended here, but if Minn. had trouble being ready for this game because they had to travel, maybe they ought to start coming east for some more regular season games. Have they ever played @ BC, BU or UNH? BC played the Gophers really tough twice in 2008 and gave them another good game @ Minny in the 2009 NCAA QFs. Home ice, a gift-wrapped lucky break at 0:24, and some confidence was enough to BC to get over the hump today.

Hard to enjoy the trip as a whole too much when your team plays a clunker.

Minnesota played at BC in 1998, not since. They've played 4 games @ UNH, not since 2003. Whether Minnesota wasn't ready at all or just reacted poorly to the early goal I can't say, but we didn't have the most impressive road results this year.

BC played the Gophers really tough twice in 2008 and gave them another good game @ Minny in the 2009 NCAA QFs.
Halfway through the 2009 quarter, BC looked just as lost as Minnesota did today. Then Mo Lam got the CFB, and the whole game changed.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Minnesota at #4 Boston College, 3/12 at 1pm

Ok, but Minnesota played @Clarkson this season (an NCAA team last year, swept them), @Harvard last season (who hosted an NCAA quarterfinal that year, went 0-1-1), @Harvard in 2004-05 (the championship game that year and year before), @Brown in 03-04 (just starting to go in decline), @Harvard-Brown in 01-02 and 00-01.

So Joe's point that Minnesota isn't coming East enough is off base. They've played a top eastern team each of the last two seasons. And it's not their fault Clarkson was mediocre this season.

Though Joe probably has a point that Minnesota hasn't done so great playing East lately against real good opponents, loss to Mercyhurst in the 2009 Frozen Four, 0-1-1 at Harvard in Dec 2009, and this game.

Not sure why Minnesota didn't come east more from 2006-2009

Well, it makes sense when you can fairly assume easy victory in the NCAAs over Eastern teams. But maybe that's no longer so.

The early goal definitely changed everything, but BC was by no means lucky today. It was a fairly even game after the 4 goal outburst.

Yeah I mean this was a period when the WCHA had the final teams every season except 2009, when they also had 3 in the Frozen Four.

Part of it is Minnesota got a lot of teams to come play them around, and for some reason never had to reciprocate.

UNH of course was the best team Hockey East team of that era, but they hosted Wisconsin often around then, not Minnesota.
