NCAA Hockey - 2023/24 **Insert Witty Tagline**

El-oh-el at those who think Mankato is upset. Did you all not see their coach and half the roster bolt for UWisco last year?

The only schools who are mad are Miami and Colorado College who won't have someone to take their place in the bottom of the league.

Also, any bets on when Rico gets sh*tcanned a second time for taking a team to the NCHC?

I’d bet that the boosters at Mankato are pretty upset and that’s what counts.

Being a UAA fan I’ve mostly checked out of the realignment stuff (since it’s painfully obvious no one is taking UAA or UAF any time soon no matter how much UAF simps to the CCHA), but what’s going on with the whole Summit League/NCHC merger stuff I keep seeing?

The former NCHC commish is now the commish at the Summit League. DU, NoDak, UNO, and now StT are members so? *shrug*

Suck's to suck I guess?

one more way football rules all sports.

I think it's less "sucks to suck", and more, "sucks to not have B1G budgets and TV access."

What's actually happening is that the D2 & D3 play-ups are getting pushed out of the sport at the D1 level, as was predicted a decade ago when realignment first happened.

The only D2 schools that have gotten pushed out of the sport were pushed out by other D2 schools.

I don't know how much of an impact it actually has, but there are some quirks to the NCAA legislative processes for the Summit League sponsoring hockey to be beneficial. There's a D1 Sports Council that is made up of members from the full sport conferences. There's also a Competition Oversight Committee that handles decisions for non-basketball and football sports. That Oversight Committee is made up of members from the D1 Sports Council, so right now the Big Ten is technically the only hockey conference that has an official place at the table when it comes to decisions made as part of a vote for either the D1 Council or the Competition Oversight Committee.

That would be one reason for the Summit/NCHC merger happening. Not sure if there are other reasons that would come into play, but that's the main one that I've seen thrown out there.

Having a vote on the councils is something I’ve heard. Doesn’t surprise me, DU and NoDak have a long history of trying to keep up with the B1G schools.

The offer to St. Thomas was as much about their location as anything. The NCHC wants to have a footprint in the Twin Cities due to the fact that a good number of players on teams like UMD, SCSU, UND, etc..., are Minnesota kids.

It wasn’t stated as such but this interview with the NCHC Commissioner kind of highlights that. But it also really highlights why Mankato (and Bemidji) weren’t chosen:
"They've got a really solid alumni base with 115,000 alumni, 85% of which are in the Twin Cities area," Weems said. "From a travel perspective, we're a pretty national, spread-out league. One of the selling points for Arizona State as well was that, while they are outside of the footprint, all of our institutions pretty much have a direct flight to Tempe or Phoenix and the campus is 10 minutes from the airport.

"All of our schools can get to a direct flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul (International Airport) and campus is 10 minutes away. The University of St. Thomas' commitment to growth and elevagting their reputation and academic and athletic portfolio has been really strong."

Also, there’s this:
"I think we're very comfortable at 10," Weems said. "I think we've got a really nice mix. We like our footprint and we have to figure out our scheduling model and playoffs. But we think we have a good mix of universities that are all committed to hockey at a high level.

"A large part of our conversations in the past 18-24 months is how do we continue to position the NCHC strongly in an NCAA landscape that, really, from day to day, we're not sure where it's landing," Weems said. "We feel really good about the institutions and their commitment to be competitive on the national scene."

I think Mankato can pretty much kiss their NCHC chances goodbye.

I will say that realignment is probably not over, especially if the NCHC/Summit League merger comes to pass. I feel like the knives are going to come out again and as a fan of school with no dog in these fights it’s going to be mighty entertaining.

Realignment is never over. With the NCAA or amaturism going boom I am sure we will see add on effects to everyone in college hockey. I just hope college hockey exists for as many schools as possible.

My personal belief is the only way it happens for Mankato is if Miami and WMU decide they would rather play LSSU, Tech, etc…, and bolt the NCHC. It’s possible at that point that BSU and Mankato could join.

If that means Florida State and USC then, no, f-ck them.
