NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

What, technically, is a badger? I always thought the mid-west teams had a curious propensity for choosing mascots that are generally considered pests; of course, to us fans of the east, appropriate choices;):p

"Any of several carnivorous burrowing mammals of the family Mustelidae, such as Meles meles of Eurasia or Taxidea taxus of North America, having short legs, long claws on the front feet, and a heavy grizzled coat." They are mega diggers and dig for crap to eat like rats and gophers.

And a gopher is a rodent: "burrowing rodent of the family Geomyidae having large external cheek pouches; of Central America and southwestern North America"

So, now you know Badgers are good, they kill all sorts of rodents, gophers included. I expect full backing on your part of UW from here on out.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

I've always been pretty content with the job Mendel does. I don't recall many games that he's really gotten himself into.
After the 2005 WCHA championship game, Johnson likely wouldn't agree with that.
There was one year Mendel made it to the top of my "worst official of the year" ranking, and then I didn't see him the whole next season. I was hoping he was gone for good. No such luck... he returned the season after that. :(

He was pretty awful saturday, for both teams.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

If Cornell isn't ready to play, at their best, from the tender on out at the first drop of the puck it will be a very, very long day for them. The Rodents have one of the fastest teams in the nation, if not THE fastest. No way Cornell can win a shoot-out type game against them. No way.

Cornell is a fast skating team as well. Not saying they are faster than Minny cause I dunno, but they do have some players with serious speed.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

The first European settlers who came to Wisconsin began mining lead and galena to be used in shot for guns and paint. Miners who wanted to work through the winter found that using their excavations for shelter made sense. Roofs and other makeshift walls were added to complete them. Since these miners dug for their living and lived in "burrows", they were nick-named "badgers". The title was given to all new inhabitants of the mining area and eventually to all who lived in Wisconsin. If you take a look at the State flag, a miner is featured on the right side. Alas, mining is now struggling in the State. Stay tuned for more...

Does that mean that the Badgers will be struggling. :D

If you look at our mascot, we're really the University of Minnesota Golden Thirteen Striped Ground Squirrels, but that doesn't fit on a t-shirt very well.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

Cornell: this may help:

"For large areas that have active gophers, you will need to bait. . .

To effectively treat, you need to dig a small hole and carefully place some bait every 5-10 feet along the tunnels."

:D:D:D:rolleyes:

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

Here's a place to put links on stories regarding the teams, discuss the upcoming game, and if Matt feels so inclined, he can talk smack and call us names like TTT would.
Whoa I called you names? Also, ORLY?:
Personally I'm thrilled to once again meet up with our Minnesota friends who are making the trip. Who's coming out?
I respect the hell out of the Gophers. Wisconsin, not so much.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. As I have often said, the Gophers have been my second favorite team, and I have the utmost respect for their program.
This. Love the Gophers.
Also, I don't have a history of rampant uncontrollable delusion during NCAA tournament action. Probably would be a more entertaining thread if I did! :D
Keep talking, I'm going to start a "it's time to eat crow" thread when BC wins. But enough hijacking this thread. Sorry.
I usually never root for the rodents, but there seems to be this east/west thing in gal's hockey, and I'd like to see the west continue to win. Go Rodents.
There's a *big* east/west thing, and Go East, but **** BU. Always and in everything.

I stand by my prediction of Cornell winning, but good luck to both teams. Either one of these two teams would be a fine national champion.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four 2012 - Cornell vs. Minnesota

Whoa I called you names?
I didn't say you'd mean it! :D Didn't you have some posts on Facebook last year that should have been bleeped? Maybe not. I just remember some photos of a certain final reading of a scoreboard in the last few months in a discussion that I think didn't even involve us. But I digress ...

Let's just say I would VERY much welcome another meeting on Sunday to find out whether the Eagles are still three goals better than the Gophers. Obviously, there's work to be done to make that a possibility, and the two red and white teams will have some things to say about it.

Or you could take the Carl Spackler approach:
Okay, I was undecided before, but now I have to bring my dancing gopher to Duluth.

Better DEAD than red.

Bet you will change your tune to Gophers neva if the Eagles make it beyond Friday Eva :D
Hey I'd be thrilled for a BC/UMTC final. What a fantastic matchup that would be.

It'd be like BC football playing Clemson -- Go BC, but overwhelming respect for the opponent.
