NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Having seen how both teams were so good defensively, I thought this would be a close, low scoring game. But my gosh who ever would have thought they would play almost two full games before one of them would score three? I was pulling for UMD, only because they were representing our league, but I feel for Cornell, having to come out on the losing end after such a terrific effort, and season.

Congratulations to both teams, it was quite a show you both put on National TV today.

P.S. What would be the odds of all three NCAA games ending in the same score, 3-2?

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

1. You obviously don't like women's hockey. Why are you here? To tell those of us who DO like the game that it sucks?

2. zoofer isn't a UMD or Cornell fan.

No I want to like womens hockey. I would love to be backing our program and excited about it. I just can't do that until the game changes.

The question was asked in that guys quote of "how do we get people to love this game." Am I not allowed to answer that without you getting all defensive?

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

If you watched the D3 men's game yesterday that went almost 3 OT's there was less back and forth action. Remember they are going on two full games now. Even the D1 men wouldn't look as stellar at this point.

I watched the 1st 3 periods man, it was no different.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

because we've never seen a guy misfire on a puck

or the game slow down after playing 5 periods of hockey

...and no skill for cornell...would you be willing to play against them?

Really, the defensiveness in this thread is unreal. They misfired on about 40% of the shots man. I am not a D-1 hockey player so no I would not like to play against them. But when your USA olympic team, yes the best of the best, can't be Minnesota boys high school teams then the level of skill just is not there yet.

Congrats to the lady bulldogs, maybe it will help me be a fan someday when shannon miller is gone and the new coach makes an "attempt" to recruit some US talent. At least the mens teams attempt it, then lose the recruit to Minny/Bucky/NoDak and then they go get the Canadians. They just don't go right to finland for the start.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

thanks for the defense guys...Sober guy, I understand your comment about roofing from the blue line, and anyone here on this thread has seen some women do that...Birchard's winner against Northeastern for example made the water bottle jump...not every player can do everything
Isn't Ruggerio miles above AJ ?

Quadraple post here, yes you are right every player may not be able to do it in a game situation, but every player should be able to make that shot just not as well as the next, and only about half the girls on the elite teams can. I played intramurals with a lot of these lady bulldogs when I was in college, and a good portion of them couldn't roof a shot in a pick up game.

For you to get the "Casual fan" and the "Mens game fan" these things need to change. I would love for you to find me a mens d-1 player who couldn't roof a shot or take a hard laser slap shot. They all can or they wouldn't be on the team. That is all I am saying, some people just don't want to hear the truth as to why a womens title game sold about 1000 tickets.

Psst....boys are bigger, stronger, and faster. It has more to do with the inherent physical differences between men and women. Steve Saviano was "tiny" by the standards of men's D1, but he'd be bigger than most female D1 players.

Actually, from experience, the lack of checking is one of the biggest complaints of the "casual" or "men's game" fans.

That, and the inherent assumption that female players are bad. They've never seen this alleged lack of skill you proclaim, yet they insist that women's hockey must be awful.

In my experience, it is blind ignorance for the most part that people won't even give it a shot. And I say that as a season ticket holder for BOTH the men's and women's teams at UNH.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Having to kill that penalty hurt. It was a legit penalty, but so were the 15 other non-calls over the overtime.

Right but the call in question came on a breakaway and the others were either mid ice infractions or players falling over each other. They had to call it because it was a clear-cut scoring opportunity.

And by the way, it should have been a penalty shot. The UMD player was over the blue line and had a step on the Cornell D.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Then what is?

The foul was not from behind as I recall, they were skating in relatively side by side and the Cornell player dove forward to try and knock the puck away and took the UMD player down. I've seen much more blatant hooks and trips from further behind called as minors instead of penalty shots, so was not at all surprised to see this one called the way it was.

I was shocked that the ref even called it. They had their whistles stuffed in their pockets for the OT's. Plenty of penalties to be called both ways after the third period.

Boy, what a great game though. Lots of near chances, great saves, ups and downs, and puck moving skills. Both teams are to be commended for never quitting and giving everything they had. I was rooting for Cornell and thought they did a great job playing in their first NCAA final. I imagine that they will be back as a tough competitor next year in the ECAC.

I agree with your description. As a neutral observer, I was very glad that only a minor, not a P.S. was called. Such a game deserves an ending with both teams on the ice, not just a goalie and a shooter.

Congratulations to UMD on their 5th title. And very sincere congratulations to Cornell on their entire season -- you could not have made a better impression on me.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

First of all, congrats UMD. It was a heartbreaking end to a tremendous run for Cornell, but I'm thrilled I got to see this team get to the title game. Here's hoping the Big Red improve on this season's result in 2010-2011. :D

When it comes to the current skill differential between men's and women's D-I hockey I think the bigger issue is that women's hockey is a young sport. With some rare exceptions I don't think you can develop the kind of shooting, passing, and stickhandling skills the D-I men have unless you start playing very young, and I doubt women are playing hockey at age 4 all that often. There's less institutional support and less high quality coaching available, and that makes a huge difference in the depth of talent available at the D-I level.

I'm a women's hockey fan. I have been for over 10 years. I've given up on trying to convert unwilling fans - they don't appreciate the game and won't appreciate the game until it gets faster and more exciting. But I've also seen the quality of play of women's hockey as a whole (and Cornell in particular - wow) improve tremendously over that time. The top players are probably not that much better than before, but qualitatively speaking I think the median is quite a bit higher than it used to be. That trend will continue as long as the sport continues to grow, especially among younger players.

Agree on your first point...The penalty had to be called, as the offended players was going in on a clear cut scoring chance, and the infraction took that chance away. It was a penalty cause the player was brought down with the offending player not playing/touching the puck.

Dissagree on your second point...It was not a penalty shot since the attacking player was not "clear" on a breakaway. The defending player still had a marginal inside position on her. In hind sight the defending player may have been better off skating one or two more strides before the "dive to prevent the shot attempt".

Penalty call aside, UMD had the better clear cut chances the deeper it got into that third period of OT. They hit the post on a nice tip in attempt earlier, and Mazotta made some prime time saves including the one where the UMD player plowed into her on a quick bang bang play.

Agree on the other assessment. FANTASTIC end to end action. Congrats to both teams on a fantastic final game.
