No one with the Pistons is blameless. But the reality is, the salary cap severely limits movement of stars, causing teams to run their courses. Look at the recent history. Since the Pistons' titles in 1989-90, every championship team has fallen apart within five years. Well, all but one: San Antonio has four titles since 1999, mainly because it was 20-62 in 1997 and landed No. 1 pick Tim Duncan.
The Heat won in 2006 and were 15-67 two years later. The Lakers won in 2002 and were 34-48 three years later, before rebounding. After Michael Jordan left in 1998, the Bulls disintegrated. After the Rockets won in 1995, they missed the playoffs four straight years, starting in 2000.
