National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Where was source for that definition of homegrown again? Way too much junk to read through.

I'm thinking he missed that part again. I glanced through his post but didn't see anything addressing that. That was the whole point of me saying anything and he still hasn't answered it.

I'll try once again.

Dirty, where did you get your definition of "homegrown talent"? You keep referring it as a truth but no one but you has any idea where it came from. You can't claim something as a truth if you just make it up. Please cite your resource for the definition.

EDIT: I can't believe I missed this. He says a truth is that ND has 7 national championships and MN has 5. That should be NCAA championships because we all know national championships MN has 7.

It's not my fault Minnesota fans use an overly broad definition of homegrown. Since Minnesota's campus is located in Minneapolis and St. Paul while North Dakota's campus is located in Grand Forks, it only makes sense to use those cities as the true definition of homegrown talent. Look on the bright side, last year Minnesota had more homegrown talent than North Dakota.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Homegrown Definition:
1. grown or made at home or in your local area; or
2. raised in or coming from your local area

Local Definition:
1. pertaining to or characterized by place or position in space; spatial.
2. pertaining to, characteristic of, or restricted to a particular place or particular places: a local custom.
3. pertaining to a city, town, or small district rather than an entire state or country: local transportation.
4. stopping at most or all stations: a local train.
5. pertaining to or affecting a particular part or particular parts, as of a physical system or organism: a local disease.

Dirty's definition is certainly more appropriate than including everyone in the entire State of the University of Minnesota.

Uh-oh you bolded small district! Another can of worms!

It makes sense to who? That's my point. If something makes sense to you, it definitely can't be classified as truth for that reason alone.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

So you concede that including everyone from the State of the University of Minnesota is wrong?
You'll have to excuse my friend, he's a little slow. You concede that someone from a "small district" can be homegrown? What's the UND definition of small district? Guessing word definitions like this are a final up there since spelling your name correctly gets you in.

The Twin Cities (i.e. Minneapolis and St. Paul) would be a small district. I might even go as far as including the towns that share a border with Minneapolis or St. Paul. I'm not terribly familiar with the Twin Cities geography, so I'm not sure how much that adds, but the "small" clarifier should easily provide guidance that it shouldn't extend beyond 5 miles or so of the Twin Cities campus...think along the lines of Washington, D.C.

If you include the greater Metropolitan area then Minnesota has 16 "homegrown" kids. 17 if you include New Prague which I'd put on the "fringe".

This convo hurts my brain. This 5 mile number comes from nowhere.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Oh goody. We are back to this crap again. When I say we, I mean not me. I see even one of the umtc duluth fans are in on it, too. The Gophers AND the Sioux are the bestTHEBEST! at everything, except one is better. We will know on Thursday.:)

I'll put it this way, Washington D.C. (which most people would consider is a "small district") is just under 70 square miles.

Giving a 5 mile radius would equate to just under 250 square miles, or about 3.5 times the size of D.C. It's probably a bit bigger than necessary, but for the purposes of this discussion should work just fine.

How many players does Minnesota have that are from 5 miles or less of the Twin Cities campus?

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

According to your overly broad definition, sure.
Yours is overly narrow. We all know what opinions are like, and we all know what yours is. Glad everything gets settled on the ice.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Well, FWIW, I just gave the dictionary definition. So, you are saying that the dictionary is wrong.

No, definition is fine. But the campus isn't Mpls./St. Paul it's UMTC which is the Twin Cities. And the Twin Cities includes all surrounding suburbs. So, my 16-17 number is more accurate than Dirty's baiting 0.

5 mile radius gives you 78 square miles.

They also have remote campuses all over the state. I took classes in Chaska for my MBA at the UofM.
