National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

I did want to ask dirty if Tonka Bay is a close enough suburb to be home grown, or not. It seemed really important to him a few days ago.

But today, not so much.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Had the pleasure to witness this chess match, to say the end was shocking is an understatement. Both goalies put on clinics for the fans. With the ebbs and flows, both teams were pretty much evenly matched. To me, Union looked like the best team in the building today, very quick to the puck and really the only team that showed a sustained forecheck, which was the difference against Johnny Hockey U .

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

I don't agree with 8-7, but I would go with anywhere from 3-2 to maybe 5-4. There were several excellent opportunities that could have/should have been cashed in at both ends, but with the kind of goaltending you expect at the D1 level I don't think there were enough of them to make it a 8-7 game. Average goaltending up to 5-4, very good goaltending 4-3 or 3-2. But in this game we had excellent goaltending at both ends and it ended 2-1.

Both teams had numerous lasers that were an inch wide, the goalies heads were on swivels at multiple points during the evening.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Congrats to both teams, it was one of the best college hockey games I've seen in a long time. That ending really has to sting for the NoDak fans. While I would certainly rather have my team play a great game and have a chance to win while the game is going on, if the end result is a loss, it hurts your heart less when you lose 4-0 and all you can say is "we simply got beat by a better team." However, a game like this is one you can have some pride in once the sting wears off a little.
Congrats Gophers!

OK, what the hell kind of obligation would prevent a UND fan from seeing this game?

Seems like an odd reason, but I have a very old dog I thought was going to meet his maker last night. He didn't, so everything is good, and he's not in pain.

You know how dogs sense things, and I think he just knew something very evil was about to happen in Philly. :)

Good luck with Union. That matchup is even more intriguing than UM/BC, IMO.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

My favorite part about the amazing goal was how smart Holl was to know how much time was left and know that he could join the rush without having to worry about UND being able to score. He doesn't do that we might still be in OT. This surpasses Wheeler's goal at the Final Five as the most amazing Gopher goal I've ever seen.

Give the old dog all the love you can

Yeah Holl has turned into a very good college player over his 4 years here.

Also, playing for a NC should raise the glass level Scoobs... :)

How your dog figured out we were killing chickens in the Wells Fargo Center parking lot we may never know...

I am glad he will be around to deliver you from evil. ;)

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

burd, my dog is the first I've ever had and is still young so I haven't been through that yet, but I can imagine. Happy to hear he is ok.

Burd - Dog lovers everywhere feel your pain. good luck, glad to hear he's ok.

In my opinion, the game was a real mix of back and forth, someone called it a chess match, pretty interesting observation which would mean the coaches were controlling the play. I saw 2 teams play very defensively, always have 3 or more guys back on every attack, which pretty much eliminated the all out attack Minnesota had vs St Cloud. I was hoping Kloos would get one after getting hammered a few times, hard checks were going both ways though - not blaming anyone (aka Boyd). Even on the final break Rau just flung the puck on a prayer and it bounced off the shin guards of the defenseman, behind Holl who had the mind to back leg kick it up to his stick for a final shot, not even thinking. amazing finish. I had lost hope after REilly's penalty with 1:39 left and UND kept it in our end for shot after shot.

Rau needs to get some credit for not just icing the puck to run out the clock and get to OT. They didn't give up, one last rush to the other end.

This. Our dog is over 10 now and I'm trying to enjoy every minute cause I don't know how long it's going to last.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Never a dull game when these 2 teams meet.

Hats off to UND and their fans on another great season and yet another top-flite team. This was a team that I think most fans had written off halfway through the year (even despite their predilection for 2nd half surges). A very gutsy tournament from a very well-rounded, balanced and committed team. They took it to MN for large chunks of the game, and were very successful in preventing MN from getting into any sort of groove or developing any kind of momentum.

Wilcox was the best player on the ice last night. Some have called him out on UND's goal, but I don't really agree. The only thing he didn't do was control that rebound from the first shot. Gaarder made a phenomenal reaction play after driving to the net to bat the puck in.
Obviously Wilcox had his mind turned to something other than this, but as a Gopher fan his performance last night was a big middle finger to all the voters who left him out of the Hobey Hat Trick. Wilcox showed last night just why and how he was the best goaltender in the country this year, and just how instrumental he has been to the success of MN all season.

I also thought Rau had one of his best games of the year last night. He got undressed by (I think it was) Grimaldi on 1 rush that led to a prime look for Grimaldi, but other than that he was as dialed in as could be. On a night where MN looked very average on face-offs (an area that has been one of their biggest strengths all year) Rau won the most important one, and managed to transition into a short-handed rush rather than just dump the puck. It should also be noted that while Holl's shot was a seeing-eye "just get it on goal" attempt, he made a very smart and experienced decision to jump into the zone there with only a couple seconds left. Late in a 1-1 game of this magnitude, not many defensemen would make that decision to jump in short-handed and contribute to a 3-man rush.

Again, congratulations to UND on a great season. If I were a better man I would share the sentiment of some of my fellow Gopher fans in feeling badly for how the season ended for the Sioux. But I'm not a better man, and I'm not a liar. So I'll just tip my hat again.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

After watching those games, its easy to reach the conclusion that Minnesota is least likely to win it all (except for the fact that they made it to Saturday's game). Although MN had opportunities, UND had much better of the overall play and Union looked incredibly dominant at times.

They're the little Gophers that could. Huge underdogs vs the pro team from out east.

Any over/under bets on when the "Fire Hak" thread will reappear?

Thank goodness for the lack of homegrown talent.
