National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

How about all the times that the Sioux had too many men on the ice tonight and it didn't get called? Buccigross and Melrose pointed that out at least a few times.

Yeah, the Sioux definitely got away with too many men a time or two and didn't get a call. The refs let the teams play, and I thought both took advantage of going up to the line but not crossing it. It was a lot of fun to watch (minus the nerves), and I'm sure the neutral had a great time seeing these two battle for 60 minutes.

What a game...Congratulations to Minnesota.

That could have certainly gone either way. I thought it was pretty even. I thought North Dakota had a slight edge overall as far as controlling play, but I thought Minnesota probably had the higher quantity of grade A chances. That being said, both teams had several, and both goalies played great. I'm sure some of the North Dakota guys will be seeing empty nets tonight, but the same could be said for Minnesota guys (although, they won't feel so bad about it :)).

At the end of the day, it was a great way to add to the rivalry. I wish the result would have been different, but not much else.

Again, Congratulations to Minnesota. You guys have a hell of a team, and good luck against Union.

Classy post. Heck of a game and a season for your team.

I did want to ask dirty if Tonka Bay is a close enough suburb to be home grown, or not. It seemed really important to him a few days ago.

Thanks FS23

Was a nail biter of a game played at a high intensity level, could have went either way.

Also, maybe it was just the stage/importance of this game but I have to say...there really wasn't much to truly hate or loathe about the Gopher team that I watched play UND tonight. Can't even point the finger at Rau.

Don't know what to think of that....it's weird.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Thought this was a hell of a hockey game. Both teams were outstanding, though I thought that North Dakota was the better team in this game. Granted, Minnesota is the better team over the long haul, but not necessarily on this night. In any case, the Gophers are one of the top 2 teams in the Country, and their quality cannot be disputed. North Dakota Fans, being a Ferris Alum, I know precisely how you feel. Minnesota (and Union) Fans, Congratulations! It will undoubtedly be an incredible National Championship Game.

I had the same feeling towards the end. If North Dakota won, what am I going to be mad about?

Truly incredible game.

Agreed. As I said, the only thing I would change about that game is the result. Both teams played like they wanted it badly, and that was probably one of the best days at the Frozen Four for the neutral in a looooooong time.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Another fierce UND-Gopher rivalry game as anticipated, but IMO ranks up there as one of the absolute best games between these two teams EVAH. The compete level in this game was extraordinary as both teams seemed determined from the puck drop to leave everything on the ice tonight. Both teams fought extremely hard in puck battles on the walls, finished checks, showed good speed up and down the ice, stormed the net, and capped off their play with a goalie duel between two netmeinders who executed their A-game tonight with NHL caliber quickness and precision. Credit UND who seemed to control most of the game with their typical brand of physical, defensive play and aggressive net strikes outshooting the Gophers 37-28.

In all honesty, this game could have gone to either team as both teams stared at an open net a couple times, but could not punch one in until midway through the third period. Kyle Rau competed hard all night to lead all Gopher shooters and was all over the ice tonight. When Sam Warning scored off a Rau rebound, it felt like that was the winning goal, but UND's strong work ethic and tenacity got them back in it and tied the game at 1-1 on a smart heads up play by Gaarder who slapped his own flying rebound out of the air and past Wilcox.

But as he has done all season, Adam Wilcox was the MVP of the game making one stellar save after another to keep the Gophers in the game. Intense rivalry games like this have often been decided on a deflection, screen, or turnover and this time Justin Holl logged his first goal of the 2013-14 season and got the game winner with .6 seconds on the clock. Gothberg was heavily screened and never saw the puck ricochet off the left post. Unbelievable finish to one of the best UND-Gopher rivalry games ever played. Go Gophers!

Absolutely agree. UND outplayed MN tonight IMO. Wilcox was the great equalizer tonight as he has been when they have needed him all season.

Honestly, I said it mid way thru their game against UW, and I will say it again. This UND team has been playing some fantastic hockey and playing with a TON of heart.

With the recruiting class you guys have coming in next year, your team is going to be scary.

This was one for the ages. What. A. Game.

It certainly ranks up there with the best of them. IMO, the 2004 Final Five Championship is still the best game played between the two. The 2007 Final Five and Regional Finals were great matchups as well. The talent on the ice for each of those three games was ridiculous. I have never seen the full 1979 Title game, and the 2005 Frozen Four and 2012 Regional Final were more one-sided than anything. The 1997 Final Five Championship was a pretty darn good game too, and the 2012 Final Five semifinal was pretty good as far as drama is concerned. At the end of the day, tonight's game adds another great 60 minutes to an already impressive resume between these two teams. It really is too bad that these teams won't meet regularly anymore. No good reason that these sides shouldn't play 2 games during the season....but that's a topic for another thread.

Once again, tonight's game was a classic. I'm sure the Gopher faithful will have the 0.6 goal cued up whenever these two teams match up again...and they should. Hard fought win for the Gophers...painful loss for the Sioux, although the expectations for this team this season make it ever so slightly easier to handle. North Dakota will be better next season, and these two teams could easily meet again in the NCAA Tournament next year. Looking forward to it already.

If one wanted to make a person become a hockey fan....show them this game. Then drop the mic and walk offstage.

:p:D:D

FWIW, if I were to give them 1 game to watch...I don't know if it would be this one. I'd probably go with one that was higher scoring...like the '06 Final Five Semi between the Gophers and St. Cloud (8-7 in Ot IIRC). Most newbie fans don't appreciate two goalies playing out of their minds.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Figures I would miss a game as good as this one apparently was. Congratulations gophers.
