National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

eh. FredsDeadFriend sorta brought that on with what I thought was a rather sanctimonious post. Further reading of the thread revealed it was on several such posts by FDF

More like a couple of dozen posts. All kidding aside, as an older poster who saw Parker and York play against a each other, us easterners find the western bias a little off putting at times. There is now a ton of parity in college hockey now and what Yale and union showed the last two years is not a fluke. I know that some of the older western school posters know that, but FDF does give your program a bad name and feeds the perception of bias. I believe BUPhD was attempting to play with FDF to make a point.

Also the whole "state of hockey" claim is a bit much when the reality is that there are several states of hockey with hockey programs the equal of the Gophers. I grew up through the BU vs MN rivalry that exploded in the 70's when both programs won 3 titles but never faced off against each other in the championship game. And of course we have the whole 80 Olympics deal with the MN vs MA players thingie.

Suffice it to say that there is enough boasting from multiple states and programs to go around without reverting to making some over the top claims that only serve to reinforce the western bias perception.

I for one enjoyed the last 2 FFs because it is good for college hockey when schools like Union and Yale win without scholarships or big time traditional hockey power reputations showing their is another's any to win. And that is there is a lot of good talent out there and even better coaching than there was 15-20 years ago

I can't wait for Boston next year. And also hoping ESPN would retire Barry Melrose. I think we can all agree he's brutal

i love buccigross for his passion. you can tell that unlike gary thorne, bucci really took the time to learn all the names etc. he's just not great at calling the game IMO. would love to see someone like jaffe instead of melrose. i think he does a great job.

Bucci's OK, but he did forget that Union has a D-1 Womens Hockey Team when he said that the Mens Hockey Team was the only D-1 program at the school.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

the parity is such that finding the right coach can definitely change your fortune.
Don't remind me :D

-- State's most popular college team (any sport) over the past two decades
-- 22 years as UNH Head Coach
-- 0 NCAA titles
-- 2 Hockey East titles
-- most recent league title 12 seasons ago

I wish he would be professional. The lockerroom slang and calling the game like a constant highlight got old.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

agree with that for sure. like i said, love his passion but can do without some of that stuff.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Congrats to Union, they were the best team last night and rightfully deserve the championship.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

I am. Which is exactly what I said. If you'd set aside your bitterness towards me for a second, you'd see that.

The only reason people are mentioning losing players and playing freshmen is because that set expectations low for this Gopher team coming into this season. And they exceeded expectations. It's not "making excuses", it's recognizing an achievement.

I don't harbor bitterness towards you - don't give yourself that much credit. I just haven't forgot - nor has anyone else - that you came in here, both maroon and gold guns blazing (of course under a different name) just like our new friend Fred. Do you see how ridiculous he is or do you secretly agree with all of that?

Anyway, be proud of the freshmen. It was a nice run for them. It's not a crazy Miracle on Ice type of run though as they are a highly regarded group and certainly could have won it all. It's not like you did it with Bentley's freshman class.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Gurt - Fair enough. In all honesty, I thought we put the animosity behind us when we found common ground on high school hockey. Maybe it will take more time.

Not trying to insinuate it was a "miracle on ice" type of run, but we Gopher fans also had zero expectations of this team making it this far either. So perhaps it falls somewhere in between.

Just went back to my preseason write-up and I had the Gophers winning 20 games in the regular season, finishing 3rd in the Big Ten, and getting bounced in the regionals.

All I'm saying is, considering expectations for this season were lower because of turnover and age, and the future is setup so nicely (we'll see how it actually plays out), the sting of defeat isn't so bad.

Hope I explained that adequately.

I expected an F4. I expected a title shot. I hoped for a title win, but didn't expect it (I mean, who really could?).

If we didn't make the F4 this season, I honestly would have been severely disappointed.

I kind of expected one once we hit the mid season mark and I saw how well this freshmen class adjusted, but I don't know that I would have been devestated if we didn't make it that far.

Gurt is right that this was a highly, highly regarded freshmen class. That said, I don't think anyone ever doubted (at least not me) that they would put up points. The big question mark for me was how well they would play defensively. That's the big transition for all freshmen, and that showed against an experienced and talented Union team yesterday. Wilcox did what he could, but a goaltender can only do so much.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

And as much as I love goalies and have a man-crush on Wilcox...he wasn't as sharp last night compared to Thu or for that matter, the season.

Anyone watching the news? What the hell are they rioting about? Lamest riot on history by the way.

The Arrogance throwing an angry pity party. The nerve that Union would dare to win the National Championship. Who do they think they are?

Great job Union! Loved the first period. Congratulations.

BS, he was fine, vechs goal came on what? 5th shot, point blank. MN was beat by a far superior team in every facet. The vech goal said it all, no one lifting sticks, no one being physical, # 11 came in to late with zero sense of urgency. Union won the battles and won the game.

Patrick Roy would have lost last night to them. Could have been 5-1 easily. The truth is, Unions goalie was off his usually outstanding game and had puck control issues. After that, he made huge breakaway save(on an off side play) and righted the ship, he is a great goalie and was a huge surprise this year

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

1. The "riots": uh, a couple people did stupid stuff. Most were just hanging around not doing anything. Media hype is tainting the reports.

2. Wilcox was not the same guy we saw Thursday night, nor the entire season. The D gets most of the blame, sure, but many times Wilcox bailed the D out in the past. Not last night.

3. That being said, I give total credit to Union for hammering it home the entire game.

I suspect Wilcox would like to have the 1st & 6th goals back.
2nd, 3rd, 4th was all about Union wanting it more than the five MN skaters did.
5th goal was a thing of beauty. Wonderful goal.

Unsung hero was the Union goalie, he made some huge saves.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Well my fears were realized. Union was a hell of a squad and the Gophers looked young at times. Congrats to the Dutchmen for a well earned title.

Fred whatever your name is, you know how big of a ****** you have to be when even your own fans want you to go away?

1. Yes.
2. Even with our own high standards as fans, FredTwatFart or whatever his name is needs to go.
