Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Fairbanks hockey puck wrote this on another thread:

This gets more confusing by the day.

From Newspaper and radio/GCI/WCHA TV Alaska broadcasts...Alaska will look into post season ban. BUT again, Nanooks will have to come up with appeal process that warrant NCAA to change that penalty. And if they lose appeal, post season ban would carry over to next season.....I would just swallow the bullet and learn from mistakes...

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Bye week couldn't be at a better time. Our guys need to hit the reset button and figure out what they want from this season.

Bowling Green is good, but they shouldn't have walked into town and swept us, regardless of the NCAA circus.

It is also hard to believe that with four and a half months of hockey season left we only have six more home game weekends. Goofy schedule this year.

Are you saying if they appeal and lose they will be banned this season AND next from postseason play?

More than likely, the appeal wouldn't be ruled on until after the season is over. While in appeal, Alaska could compete in the playoffs. If they lose the appeal, they'd be banned from next season's playoffs.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

The Nooks have only played four conference games and it’s already do or die. Being swept by both BSU and BSGU was bad enough, but it was the on ice effort that was more disappointing. Intensity was generally lacking and was backstopped by weak goaltending. When they did wake up and skate hard they looked pretty decent. Which is even more reason to be disappointed.

They have the talent just not the desire or work ethic right now. I think the character of this team is somewhat in question. They may not be playing for a playoff spot, but they sure should be playing for pride. They need a road sweep to even start to turn this season around. These will be statement games for the Nooks. One way or the other.

Go Nooks!

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Tied with the Lakers at 2 each after the 1st. We are just not a very gritty and hard working team right now. Our team defense needs work which is even more problematic when goaltending is also struggling. I hope the Coach chews some butt during intermission and fires them up, but I don’t believe that typically happens in our lockeroom. Let’s see if the boys rise to the occasion the next two periods.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Nooks up 5-2 after two. Started the second off strong but really need step it up in the third and finish strong. Increase the lead boys. Don't let them get back into it.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Nanooks get their first wcha points this year in a exciting game. I was glad to see John keeney in net tonight, though it wasn't a great game for defense. Hopefully the nooks will keep up the scoring tomorrow. Listened to the Nanooks while watching Chad Johnson and the Islanders beat the Penguins in a shootout. Great day for UAF hockey!!

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Nooks hold on for a 7-5 win. They turned what should have been a blow out into a game. And not because the Lakers caught fire, but because the Nooks finished with uninspired play and stupid penalties. I sure hope the coaches aren't happy with this win. That's not what our players need to hear. This team won't win many individual puck battles against the better teams, and combined with mediocre goaltending will be lucky if they get to forfeit the 8th playoff spot. And I hope they don't appeal the playoff ban. Why waste the energy or possibly drag out the decision to next year.

Maybe I'll be in a better mood after tomorrows game.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

...or not.

Way to screw the pooch. Coach always uses terms like “even keel” to rationalize our team strategy and play. I guess that is just coach’s talk for playing with little energy, passion, or sense of purpose or pride. The boys may have already packed it in this season. In a good cop/bad cop approach, do we have a coach that is the bad cop?

Payrayko may have excellent individual skills, but he isn’t getting the job done. Either Payrako or Froese or both were on the ice for all the Laker goals Saturday night, and looked bad in the process. We try too much stick work and don’t take the man. We give teams too much time and space as coaches like to say. Campbell and Fry have similar bad habits. Our defense is very soft. Need to get tougher. Put Tateson in with Payrako. He’s not fast but he knows it and stays home and plays D with a more physical style. Try something. You can bet that NMU will out work us pretty much like every other WCHA team has, so our defense and goaltending better step up.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Well, the trip from Alaska to Sault Ste Marie is generally brutal and we have been historically bad in their arena so from that perspective I can live with a split, but there looks like a lot wrong mentally with this team right now. Definitely not the same squad I watched start the season 5-1, but there was a significant announcement since then that probably has a lot to do with it.

Defensively we are just all over the place, which is kind of remarkable for a team that has pitched two shutouts already (and had a bagel going through two periods yesterday).

But hey, I guess us and UAA will get a thank you note from the WCHA in March if we are still holding down the 9 and 10 spots.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

If the poor play continues, does the school take the penalty and drop the appeal? It looks like 6-10 could be a bit closer this year.

Sounds like the play has been a little uneven, which is probably fairly normal in teams facing a post-season ban. Not wanting to wish this on you, but does the ban make Parayko think about going pro now? From his perspective, this season may hold little other than the prospect of injury. He's definitely shown he can dominate at the collegiate level. I know we all like to flatter ourselves and think, "Hey, I'd bust my butt every minute just as a matter of pride, even if that's all I'm playing for!" but in reality, a guy with his size and skill, who was a fairly high draft choice, has a lot (of money) at stake.

I think Parayko is gone after this year regardless of the ban. I was pleasantly surprised he came bacross for this season. He is a Blues draft pick, so they are driving that bus.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Happy Thanksgiving to all of Nanook Nation and the WCHA. And that includes a few of you smarter UAA folks, too.
