MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

I think one of the guy maybe an Avs fan, but not sure which one. Saw him and another cheering after a couple of goals. They left after the second period. Didn't get to talk to my informant after the game so don't know if the got to practice at the Pepsi Center or to take on the winner. Saw the guys, but none of the coaches.

Watching the Wild try to play hockey is a good way to make a hockey team a much worse hockey team.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Notes form the Mel Pearson show for anyone that missed it. Only included Tech topics, they also talked about other WCHA matchups and NMU/Bowling Green:

Mel obviously called in from CO, no problem for Mel to be up at 6:30, loves talking hockey
Friday night:
Off to a sluggish start
Playing on permieter too much, need to get to the net more
This is a big ice sheet, bigger than normal corners, CC was okay with us on the permiter, pretty much all weekend
We had a little bit better 2nd period, 3rd goal was not good to give up
Stebner, another SHG by Dman, he's sneaky and pics his spots to jump into play
3rd period was our best, took it to them, gave up a goal that Mel didn't like, Josh didn't either, It was 3-2 and needed a save
Overall on Friday, didn't get type of goaltending you need on road to win, 3 goals were either a nice bounce (1st) or should've been a save (CC's 3rd & 4th)
We gave the puck away too easily and too often

Saturday:
Completely different story, we had some jump and took it to them
We outchanced them 7-2 in 1st period in Grade A chances
We've come a long way in a year, still have to realize and understand what you need to do (Dirk asking maybe why we struggled Fri and completely diff Sat)
We got a 5x3 in 1st, didn't score, CC got a PP, and then they get 5x3, on replay hard to see that 2nd penalty on Sweeney, tough call
Down 1-0, still felt good how we were playing
Breakaway goal, puck poked away from Rix, back breaker, tough goal to give up, Dman also jumped up a bit too much
Offensive control by Tech, we were able to make line changes while we continued to control puck, really played well
Through about 32 mins Grade A Scoring chances were 4-0 Tech, then gave up the 5x3 goal, we can play with this team
CC goalie was excellent, might've been best goaltending performance we've seen all year

The team moved hotels to change things up to not get bored. Change of scenery.

On preparing for CC:
We did a lot of good things, we'll watch film and bring some thing down more than normal to see waht we can do better or did well
Get used to Olympic sheet
Also have to keep team active, this is out of our routine a bit, easy to sit around and get lazy
We need to score goals, Mel's only concern, hard to force offense
There are three ice sheets at World Arena, there's been contrevsory, last few years in WCHA, last year Minn didn't want UAA practicing at Mariucci all week
Owens had an issue with that in past, so we wont practice at world arena until Thur
Josh is our number 1 going into this weekend, could've played on Saturday, minor injury, didn't want to chance anything
Good to get Kevin in, he gave us a chance to win the game
Blake Pietila played well Saturday, skated and protected puck well
Rewatched the game before Mel went to bed Sunday night, kept thinking about it, to bed at 11 PM up at 4AM, thining about defensive play and line combinations
Games: 9:37, 9:07 if necessary 9:07

I understand Josh is a very well-like senior and all, but doesn't starting Genoe (the hot hand) give us the best chance to win this Friday?

This was a kind of cool story.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

personally, I'm thrilled with this season. way better that expected.
Hm... Yes, I'm a few days late on this, but I must comment. "Better than expected"? The only surprise to me this season is that we don't have a better record than we currently do. I know the last few years have been rough and we haven't had a good record, mostly because of injuries... But did you look at who we brought back this year? The last three years' MVPs! And a lot of other talent... and a very good incoming class. If they stayed healthy (which they did for the most part), it was going to be an awesome year. We won a few games we probably should've lost... and we lost a LOT of games we should've won. I knew it was going to be an awesome year for Tech. Except, I was wrong. It wasn't as great as I was expecting... but still pretty dang good for "this team."

I hope these seniors will be able to experience playing at the X...! Someone needs to tell them that the hockey games coming up this weekend are NOT important games. That's our only chance... :p

What's going to happen next year when Minnesota, UND, DU, etc. win the MacNaughton? Since they are leaving the league will they get to have it for the next year? Will it go back to Tech? Could Tech actually have possession of the cup???!?!?!
As for you, Dirty...

Tech gets the cup sometimes! We have to keep it nice and clean for the talented teams that win it. Duh.

And! It's awesome that you still have Hollywood's Hair Care Tip in your sig.

Yeah, yeah, we all know that the thought of Jamie Russell still gets your panties wet. :p

Honestly, I learned a lot about the mental aspect of hockey coaching this year. Teaching a team to win, and to put forth a winning effort almost every game, is a lot harder than it looks. When a team has generally been known as 'lovable losers' for years, it is not a fast process, regardless of the team's ancient history.

Amen brother, Amen. Congratulations to coach Pearson on a job well done.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

I liked Jamie also, but this team does not win as many games as they did this year if he's at the helm. The culture change that Fade mentions was HUGE.

indubitably.

Biggest game of the year on tap tonight. Tech has shown they can play well on the road against good teams (when expectations fall, as has been pointed out). They need to bring that free skating spirit tonight and get a lead to set the tone for this weekend. I think they might actually have as good a chance of advancing while playing on the road as they would have at home. But, it would have been fun to watch. LET'S GO TECH!

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Here's a fun story about Steve Shields. I think it's the first time I've seen Houghton located as being "about a five-hour drive west of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont." I think continued positive press like this will do almost as much good as winning games, for recruiting and building up the program. Win or lose this weekend, a lot of good things are ahead for Michigan Tech hockey. And the knack for good PR is another very positive thing Coach Pearson has added that wasn't there in the past (the "Mel Pearson Show", etc).

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Off to the Springs for some hockey.

GO TECH

GO HUSKIES

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Mel deserved COTY and hopefully I'll get to see Tech at the Final Five. I'll be rooting for you this weekend :)

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

I am going to predict that this goes 3 games, beyond that, its a crapshoot.
