Movies: Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer are stuck in La La Land

Every five years or so I watch Stargate, remembering it as a fun, stupid, low effort summer movie. And every time about halfway I realize, no, this is a legitimately well-written, well-shot, well-acted movie. It's good. It is a genuinely good movie.

I saw Stargate in the theater...great cast and a very cool premise. If it came out today half the country would believe it is real.

The Wrong Man on TCM at 6. My favorite Hitchcock movie and Vera Miles is icing on the cake. I'd seen it a coupla times before, but just found out it's based on a true story.
Have never seen it. I will have to try it out. Thank you.

LOL. Very true. See, you can be funny when you're not being a dick. Much like me, TBH.

The movie is good, but God do i enjoy SG1 the TV series more even if it's camper and not as "good" artistically. It's more fun and the actual world building that goes on over the years is superb.

Stargate was one of the first movies my wife and I realized we both loved as we were getting to know each other. Fun facts that you didn't ask for:
1st movie we ever saw in a theater together (1996 in Bahrain) - Spy Hard
2nd movie we ever saw in a theater together (1996 in Bangkok) - Twister

I've never watched it but I think I should start. I am going to have a hard time getting into it without James Spader and Kurt Russell, though.

I always think at the beginning when the dead kid's photo is shown wearing the Mets uni, "What's the tragedy? He just saved himself a lifetime of suffering."

This is adorable.

Bad sign: I have no idea what the first movie Dr. Mrs. & I saw together was. Probably something for an 8-year old girl. What did Disney release in Fall 99?

Oh! It was Mystery, Alaska.

For the first season the guy playing Daniel does a pretty solid impression of Spader...but it gets phased out. Richard Dean Anderson is Jack O'Neill.

It takes a bit to find its footing, as with most sci-fi shows (that first season of The Next Generation was...something). The guy who plays Daniel Jackson in the show does a good job carrying on from Spader, and I honestly prefer Macguyver to Kurt Russell in the role of Colonel O'Neil.

Like I said, SG1 is campy, so don't go in expecting to see Kubrik. But to me it hits a good balance between action and sci-fi, especially for a 90's/00's TV show. It's more action-oriented than Star Trek or Babylon 5, but with better world building than Star Wars.

The Atlantis spinoff is decent though not as good as SG1 - I'd put it on par with Voyager for comparison to the ST series. The most recent series (Origins? I think?) that lasted 2 seasons can be skipped.

Universe was a good concept it just came out at a bad time.

Atlantis never got a proper ending which sucks.

For what it’s worth, PlutoTV has a Stargate channel. My apologies in-advance for the amount of your TV viewing time it shall now occupy, but at the same time… welcome to my world.

Programming includes the movies and all of the series. I believe there is also some on-demand content.

1. Great idea, beautifully filmed.
2. Poorly written, poorly acted.
3. Really dumb ending.

Somebody should do it right. It's a great idea.

The urban firefight scene is unbelievably brutal. Watch that and feel like a Gazan.

Don’t disagree with any of this

I’m still processing

The Unknown Number documentary on Netflix was really good. It’s a documentary, but just long enough to hold my attention.

I do think “pull my finger” was a pretty epic way to go, esp for someone as cool as Michael caine
