Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

For me toss in Fletch, Stripes and Blazing Saddles and it's a magic set. And I agree Smokey is just step below but still enjoyable.

Stripes was awesome for the first half....lost the edge in the second half. Still a classic. And Mel.....well, nothing needs to be said.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Only seen one of those. The others just don't appeal to me. I know people will be upset or roll their eyes. I just don't care for a lot of those movies.

How could you not care for a lot of those movies if you've not seen any of those movies?

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Road was supposed to be a drama. Of sorts. Kinda.

Having seen Roadhouse at least 20 times, no one will ever convince me it wasn't intended from the start to be a completely tongue-in-cheek comedy. It just creeps up on you. I'm also convinced Swayze was not in on the joke, which makes it that much funnier. "Pain don't hurt." Well, uh... that's what you get for studying Philosophy at Columbia, Dalton.

I can't be 100% certain I won't like it, but it's based on psst experiences. I've seen Young Frankenstein and Stripes and thought both were just ok. There are a few other movies from that era that I didn't really like either. Based on that, I extrapolated.

I'm guessing you do the same thing. We all do. Would you watch Santa Clause 3? I'm guessing no.

No, that's fine. Seriously, I don't really care. It was just a take on the wording of your post.

I have seen Santa Clause 3. I had nieces and nephews when I was just 12 years old, and my parents would have them over at their house a lot. :p

He was reading "Legends of the Fall" up there in the apartment.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Smokey is "American"

There is a doc "Bandit" about that. They talked about Hollywood going in and taking out all the jerry Reed music and replacing it with "LA philharmonic" for the background chase scenes, etc. Hal Emerson had to yell at people to change it back.

Now obviously the philharmonic music was for the kep/slappy crowd :)

But for the target audience that music worked. Smoke says he's seen smokey 200 times. nuff said :p

(All this being said - smokey 2&3 suck cats balls)

There were no Smokey sequels. Dunno what you are talking about.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Rogue One was OK. It's been so long since I've seen Episode IV (I think I borrowed the VHS from my uncle in 1999), that I didn't realize/recall the connections to Episode IV until about 2/3 of the way into the film. Sue me.

Jesus H. Christ, does every movie in this series have to begin with a lost child? *yawn* Still, the setup was miles better than the $(*$($*%ing Phantom Menace.

I was disappointed in Ben Mendolsohn - he can do better than basic mustache-twirling - but hey, it's farking Star Wars, he was clearly supposed to be a cartoon villain, and I'm sure the director led him that way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: With the silly cape, and short, salt & pepper hairstyle, he uncannily reminded me of Jeremy Irons in Dungeons & Dragons . Except, his acting wasn't anywhere near, "I need to make a mortgage payment on my Irish estate, and I don't care, HA-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT" bad.

I'm going to order the dvd's of Oliver Stone's Untild History series. It looks fantastic and may pair well with my current reading list. I haven't seen a Stone movie since the natural born killers fiasco but my hopes are high with these as this is his wheelhouse

FIASCO?! While it wasn't what Tarantino envisioned, that movie is an excellent satire on the media (ESPECIALLY true since it came out 20+ years ago!). Look at the media now......

The Interview (1998)

Australian movie starring Hugo Weaving as a man who is accused of stealing a car, and maybe more. The cop who is interviewing him may or may not use unethical tactics to get what he wants.

Very good movie, lots of mind games. It's all over the place as to where the truth really is; obviously dialogue driven. It takes place pretty much in two rooms. I liken it to The Usual Suspects in style.

I didn't like Natural Born Killers at all when I saw it in the theater but perhaps I'd appreciate it more if I watched it now with time and distance

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Just watched the documentary about Big Star, Nothing Can Hurt Me. Terrific musical documentary, amazed at all of the footage they were able to find. I've said it before, but if you have not heard Big Star's first two records, #1 Record, and Radio City, you should do so. Won't leave your player for weeks.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Re-watched Suicide Squad. On the repeat viewing, I realized I was so enamored with the characters themselves (and trying to figure out their relationship to that universe) that I lost sight of the actual story being told. Ok, the story is a mess. THANKFULLY, the characters themselves were interesting enough that the story, honestly, doesn't matter at all. You could have thrown anything in there. *shrug*

Let's see what the future brings with this one.
