MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

On one hand, I'm extremely disappointed. On the other, I get it and give them a standing O. Especially, but not exclusively, Stewart. A role he was born to play.

I feel like this may be his last film. :(

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Evidently Jackman and Stewart were so pleased by the screening they have decided that's it for them and the characters. End on a high note.

Jackman decided that he was done with Wolverine a while ago, not just as a result of this movie. Stewart recently said that he'd play Prof. X in the next Deadpool movie, but he might have been joking.

I could see a cameo, due to a joke in the first Deadpool movie.

Stewart is just one of those guys that is awesome overall. Great actor, down to earth person.

Last week Stewart said he was done.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Funny anecdote:

While preparing for the first X-Men film, Jackman used wolves as inspiration because he didn't know wolverines were an actual animal.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Went to see Logan today. The story is far from revolutionary. That said, they executed it very well and it has more natural emotion to it than any superhero movie to date.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Get Out. B.

Yeah, um, let's just go right to spoilers:

So, holy sh-t. They didn't even bother with the "hey, at least leave one symbolically so they won't think th--" NOPE. So there's that.

On the whole, very good build-up. Reveal was obvious, and then they didn't know how to keep either tension or interest -- the final third is lame. But VERY impressive early on getting a lot of genuine creepiness out of very little. I also love the answer to "why black people?" which is "meh -- no real reason, that's just how it went down." That alone was worth sitting through what I'm sure will be fifteen thousand Think Pieces overanalyzing the sociology. Not to mention, of course, the Usual Suspects who are going to go ape sh-t. Those morons couldn't keep their panties unbunched for Thelma & Louise, so good luck with this.

The acting is OK -- the secondaries are the better actors (esp. Mom but of course brother. Dinner with Brother is one of the best scenes I've seen in a movie in a while. I dunno who that guy is, but he managed to put across Just Barely Keeping It Together without anything over the top. He's either a good actor or he has one helluva amphetamine habit.)

Minimalist scares are supposed to be delivered by plot, and in this movie every plot turn is telegraphed -- there are literally no surprises (except I guess that there are no surprises). I liked the concept, especially the Huge Middle Finger that this movie is to the "quiet room" conversation we see on allowed consumer media, and they had enough good ideas and momentum to get more than halfway through what could have been a really remarkable thriller. They just ran out of juice before the finish line. Meh, still worth the ticket price.

Logan. Probably the most fully developed film in the franchise. Also the most gratuitous?

Hacksaw Ridge. Great story but I thought it was poorly executed. The war scenes looked like they were filmed in a studio. Did the Japanese not realize the Americans were gaining the ridge by way of a net that they could easily cut down? Why bother showing the Japanese officer killing himself? I know why one would do so but since it was already clear the Japanese had a completely different approach to serving it was unnecessary. I kept wondering what happened to Hal, although it's possible there wasn't a concise and fluid way to portray his experience.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Wow. Relatively scathing reviews to 2 movies I really want to see (Hacksaw is on the docket for later today, actually). (Not Logan, btw, no interest in that one)

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

I havent seen either of the previous Wolverine films (but have seen every X-Men film outside of Apocalypse) but am definitely seeing Logan. Unlike the previous films this looks this looks like it serves a purpose and has a story. Oh and it is an R which a Wolverine film should be anyways...

I have heard it really earns that R rating, too.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Blazing Saddles made its way to Netflix on the first of the month, so when I saw it in the newly released section I had to give it another watch.

The most surprising thing I've ever read/heard about Blazing Saddles is that during the "Oh it's true! It's true, it's true, it's true!" scene with Bart and Lili, it originally had the ending line, "I'm sorry to disappoint you ma'am, but you're sucking on my arm." However, Warner Brothers felt THAT was too far over the line. Out of everything else in the movie, that was deemed too inappropriate.

That's hysterically funny. I had never heard that.

With each passing decade my reaction to BS of "how the f-ck did a big studio ever greenlight this?" just gets stronger. It's the most subversive movie I've ever seen. It makes MASH look like Frank Capra. Fritz the Cat is the only American film that even comes close for pure joyful nihilism (though John Waters deserves a Career Achievement Award).

The Lego Movie. Started out as AWESOME and gets even more AWESOME with every viewing.

"It will no longer be known as Taco Tuesday! It will be known as Freedom Friday... but still, on a Tuesday!"

Unikitty: So, why did you come back?
Metalbeard: This bedoubled land couch. I saw Lord Business' forces completely overlook it. Which means we need more ideas like it.
Emmet: Oh, thank you!
Metalbeard: Ideas so dumb and bad no one would ever think they would be useful.
Emmet: Oh. Thank you.

Emmet: Great. I think I got it. But just in case... tell me the whole thing again, I wasn't listening.
