MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Again, not for ratings, for the "talker".

Even the Iranian director that took Trump's immigration policy to task has been overshadowed by it.

That's what they wanted just in case someone went "guano loco" politically.

Conspiratorial? Heckyeah. But it's Hollyweird.
What you saw last night was nothing more than visual evidence of the rule that when you are 80 years old and confused about something, you ought not to ask another person who is nearly 80, and similarly confused. It will result in the wrong film called for Best Picture, and will also cause cars to drive the wrong way down a one-way road.

The "talent" (cough) would not do this because they take themselves laughably seriously.

But I was all set to be one of the people who create these narratives, and, well...

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Beatty said at the mike he saw Emma Stone's name before he had Faye announce it and was confused by it. You're sounding conspiratorial.

I didn't realize he saw her name on the card and if he did then that's just stupid.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

The Comment Trail on this story should probably just be included on all subsequent discussions of Oscars...

I thought that half of the point of even having the Oscars is for Hollywood to go bat**** crazy over some political topic or another.

The fact that people are so up in arms about it shows how many people need to lighten up and get a hobby...

On another note Czar Urea said the Oscar mixup happened because everyone was focused on attacking him.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

The guy from PW who handed Beatty the wrong card, I played football against, and worked with back in high school.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

He was pretty much your stereotypical jock, but not a dumb jock, and a pretty decent guy as well. I had intentions of really hating him since we went to rival schools, but once we got working together, I liked him a lot. For a football jock from another school.

His brother still lives around here, I see him around once in a while.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Now, as for movies. Just picked up Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Tom Stoppard's film adaptation of his play of the same name, starring Tim Roth and Gary Oldman in the title roles. Loved this movie since the first time I saw it on cable some 20+ years ago.

Follows R&G as they're called back to Elsinore by the king to try to figure out what's bugging their old childhood pal Hamlet. Clever and witty, full of great dialogue, but also incredibly stupid and full of great sight gags, as the two of them wander around the castle, sometimes wandering into the middle of a scene from Hamlet, other times just eavesdropping as the events take place around them, and sometimes just on their own, discovering the laws of physics as they go.

Gary Oldman said it best when asked what he thought the story was about and he says, "the story of Hamlet. Just shown from a different camera angle, a different perspective." Just a brilliant film.

That movie is awesome. The coin flip and "word tennis" (or however they referred to it) were brilliant scenes.

We could play at questions.

What good would that do?

Practice!

Statement. One-love.

If you can, see a good production of this. It's one of the best plays ever written. (Full disclosure: Stoppard is a personal hero.)

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

One of the things I found interesting was in Stoppard's interview, included as an extra on the disc. Actually two interviews, one at the time the original dvd was produced, and a more recent one for this 25th anniversary blu-ray.

One of the premises of the film is that R&G really aren't sure who is who. A play on the fact that they are but characters on the page, destined to play their roles as written, and nothing they can do can change their destiny. But since they are minor characters, not fully fleshed out by the author(Shakespeare), they have little or no knowledge of their motivations, their history, nor even, it seems, who is who.

And during the interview, it was mentioned that often times in newer productions of Hamlet, this is included in the production, the confusion over which is which, even though this was not a part of the original Shakespearean writing, but just a concept of Stoppard's. Demonstrates just how ingrained Stoppard's play has become in the Hamlet lexicon

Just skimmed the extras for a bit, as there is just too much there for me to get to at the moment. Two Stoppard interviews, and interviews with Roth, Oldman, and Richard Dreyfus, all roughly an hour long. That's a lot of extras, and should all be very interesting viewing.

The accountants in charge of envelopes have indeed been sacked. Numerous stories claim they were scapegoated by being fired. Scapegoating someone usually implies that the people are innocent of any wrongdoing and are unjustly accused or punished. In this case it is blame being placed squarely on the shoulders of the guilty party and punishment being doled out accordingly.

BTW, the films for the next three weeks are outstanding. Logan, Kong and the Beauty and the Beast live action are all stellar according to people who have already seen them.

The reviews I've seen for Logan so far have all been very favorable. A warning (from the reviewers) for the squeamish, the R-rating is justified, they say.

I loved it. Jackman and Stewart are such fun to watch together. And I was really impressed by Dafne Keen as Laura; it's hard to know what to expect from a kid in their second acting credit, but she was one of many highlights for me.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Evidently Jackman and Stewart were so pleased by the screening they have decided that's it for them and the characters. End on a high note.
