Just saw Dune 2. I came out of that with a general Sci-Fi question- why do they always fight hand to hand with swords? I honestly don't understand that. They had lasers, they had bazookas, they could travel well beyond the speed of light, they could fly, etc. Clearly they have plenty of technology. Why do they always have to fight with swords?

And don't tell me "honor" or some BS like that- war is war, there is no honor, there is only death.

There is a lot of "tech" in Dune that I really question, but at least I can deal with it. But when you have it, and you flaunt it (they also had force field shields), guns. Or at least lasers.

So the slower moving and easier to stop is harder to stop..... ok. Last I checked, there was effective body armor for blades well before there was effective armor for bullets. Which is to say- if a "shield" can't stop a slow moving blade- it sucks.

BUT.... they had lasers. They shot at one of the harvesting machines with lasers. Which were not affected by any shields. Let alone, the dragonfly ships were shooting at the soldiers with lasers.

Seems to me they made that up for the spectacle of large groups of people running at each other and then fighting. I got bored of that really quickly decades ago.

It’s more dramatic. Gunshots at a distance are only dramatic in dogfights.

I guess if you like that kind of thing. Given how short of time they actually covered the battle scenes, didn't seem to matter if they were blading or shooting. Just seemed odd that for a system that could move at multiple times the speed of light (given how much time it took to go from one system to the planet), they would still *have* to use blades (as was justified for reasons).

At least in Star Wars, they had good reasons light sabers (which is cooler than metal blades) could fight off the guns.

Anyway....

All CGI battle scenes, and action sequences in general, are boring. I go to pee during them. Completely trash.

I have not read any of the Dune books, though I did just buy one, and neither have I seen the movies.

My wager is that most hand and knife/sword fights take place because gun battles remove the immediate visual payoff. People seen the protagonists and antagonists on the screen together, playing into the show-don’t-tell gold standard of movies and TV.

To let a story line happen, sure. But when looked at in the perspective of nominal development, it is just for the massive hand to hand battles.

In the books, was a patrol almost completely taken out via some remote way (that appears to be lasers)? That's how II starts. So it seems rather dumb that they would willingly risk their lives to battle hand to hand when they had lasers to shoot the enemy from a distance.

There is no honor in war, just death. And there is no "fair" in war, just killing the other side until they give up. As far as I can tell, Dune just perpetuates the idea that dying for a religion is a good thing, when you are just dying because of someone else's power grab.

Dune, the first novel, says religion is a social construction, like law or language or philosophy or science or art or politics, which is itself neutral and can be used for good or ill. It doesn't "do" anything; we do things with it.

I can't speak for the follow-on novels because zzz.

Sat through Poor Things. What a steaming pile of crap. I gave emma stone the benefit of the doubt having not seen it and going based solely on her award wins, but I did not see anything that deserved the accolades she got for this dung heap of a movie. Wish I had shut it off when I first considered it, about 20-30 minutes in. But I kept hoping it would get better. I was so wrong
