I actually thought America was not great. Her monologue felt ham fisted and cringey.

It was nothing that hasn't been said a thousand times before and a thousand times better, but this was the very first time Middle America heard it, and it was said in a basic enough way that even the dumbest little girl in the audience picked up on it.

That's how real change happens. I think it's actually a social landmark.

I've only seen Maestro so far.

I strongly recommend Barbie, though it was best in a theater because you could actually hear the scales falling from the eyes of the girls. It did more to kill Commercialism than the entire life's work of Bernie.

It could have been said so much better, I think that’s my disappointment. So much of the rest of it was done creatively

but I can certainly see how women who are not new to this weren’t so impressed, I guess. I’m still surprised at the nomination

I think having her up without Margot is….not great. And I think gosling deserves the nom. He was phenomenal in a role a lot of men wouldn’t even consider

I knew someone on here would be upset about the backlash to yesterday lol. Then again, some men missed the entire point of the movie and cried about the ending

Yesterday I didn't see the entire list of nominations until after work. But during the day I do get short chances to scroll social media.

Basically every meme I saw seemingly implied that Gosling was only notable nomination the film got. Basically saying that the snubs of the women in the film with the man getting the nom was the entire point of the movie.

I legit didn't realize that America got the nom until dinnertime when I sat down and watched a vlog that detailed the entire nomination list.

That was the point here. It's that social media framed this one way while conveniently ignore a fact that sort of blows up the narrative that the meme is suggesting. This is how reality works now and it's sad =(

Some very level headed, thoughtful women I know were not happy yesterday about it. They didn’t post any stupid memes. But for many of us, Greta and Margot are the face of Barbie. They were huge forces behind the creativity and making it happen. A lot of people were so skeptical of what the movie would be, until they saw it.

Everyone I know- which means nothing- didn’t walk away thinking that America made that movie. She was just kind of …there.

the Oscar’s don’t matter and are a circle jerk for Hollywood, and I think there are snubs every year. The memes for Barbie are just low hanging fruit

think Greta Lee was robbed for Past Lives

Apparently no one noticed that America Farerra got nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

The Barbie memes spread like wildfire regarding the snubs of Robbie and Gherwig. And it's all BS.

Whether or not it is blown out of proportion (and it totally is) it is kind of a bad look and the memes write themselves. (Oh sure nominate Ken but not Barbie!) But it is not worthy of any real outrage just further proof that the Oscars are stupid and always have been. They were literally created to prop up the movie industry not be any sort of real way to judge quality.

I think if Greta had been nominated no one would have gone on a tirade but when the two main females (Director and Star) get snubbed from a film that was a cultural moment it is going to make fans mad. This is nothing new...it is just worse because now Jezebel can cry sexism.

So it’s not just cringey Oscar bait? I keep hearing that, and I def haven’t been a huge fan of some of his other work

The last quarter of the movie is terrible. Get up and walk out as soon as she gets sick.

But before that, it's an excellent character study and Cooper nails it.

Cannes is the awards for quality. Oscar is Hollywood giving itself a handy in front of a billion people.

I love Barbie and the message, but the thing is the only acting performance in it that deserved an Oscar was Gosling.

The real awards should go for screenplay, set design, costume, cinematography, directing, makeup and hairstyle, music. I hope to hell they used women for most/all of those tasks.

First time I saw it, I walked out saying gosling better be nominated, if not win. I didn’t share that.

took my sister to see it and as we walked out, she said gosling better win some awards . He freaking nailed it in a way I’m not sure others could

American Symphony (which was amazing) has a song nominated and it was co-written by Minnesotan Dan Wilson of Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic and a host of other solo and collaborative works.

I've only seen 3 of the 10 best picture nominees. Barbenheimer and The Holdovers. Oppenheimer was good but not something I'll watch again. The Holdovers was great, not best movie great, but I'd watch it again.
I've actually seen Barbie multiple times. When it was announced I had no intention of seeing it, then friends talked about it and I felt a need to see it. Margot was great in the role, but I'm not surprised it wasn't considered an Oscar worthy performance. I do think Greta was snubbed. The mix of doll like and reality is creative and great. I still can't get over the perfection of Margot's posture as she goes down the slide in Barbieland.

After reading this thread I will likely go home and watch Maestro. After watching an interview about Poor Things I think I want to see that one as well. I read Killers of the Flower Moon and don't think I can sit through the movie because the reality is too disturbing.

I agree with wT. I'd be fine with no Margot nom if Greta had been nominated. I feel like what she did with Barbie, coupled with the out of this world box office - that needs to be recognized. Not necessarily win, but I think she should have been nominated.
