Movies 52 - 1917: Sonic the Bad Boys of Prey

1917 is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking. I'm not talking about the "shot as one continuous scene" gimmick.

I mean, the locations, set design, cinematography, everything. It doesn't even look like it's filmed on sets. Just incredible set design, construction, and dressing.

And one of the few movies where I couldn't really tell the CGI shot stuff from the real thing. Just seamless. Of course, much of the digital work involved painting stuff out rather than adding things in. Most stuff was practical effects, with the CGI used mainly for extending backgrounds and such.

In 4k with Dolby Vision, that film was a visual treat.

And currently on to Jaws. Also pretty damn visually compelling. Robert Shaw at his finest.

Watched The Breakfast Club tonight with Mrs. Solo. It really holds up well! We love John Hughes movies…I checked IMDb to see if he had anything interesting we hadn’t seen yet and: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0079985/releaseinfo/

what?!?! John Hughes wrote and directed a movie about Nikola Tesla? I NEED to see this stat. I just finished a book on Tesla by Marc Seifer that is tremendous.

also…I’ve had an itch to watch Silkwood but it’s not available on streaming so I’m on the hunt for a dvd.

lastly…We watched The Muppet Movie (1979) on New Years. Jim Henson was a genius. I still love this movie and soundtrack.

I watched Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men while stuck inside this weekend. First time in a while. Still so funny. I don't know how they ever managed to get good takes with no one breaking in any scene that Burgess Meredith was in.

Some of the best one liners in history. Brilliant movies.

Walter Matthau never wanted to make the movie and made it well known when he signed to make it.

Frosh year I had a roommate from Wabasha...we watched those films every week! I can literally say them word for word. During the Pandemic the SO and I went to Wabasha and ate at Slippery's...pretty cool lots of memorabilia!

Apparently no one noticed that America Farerra got nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

The Barbie memes spread like wildfire regarding the snubs of Robbie and Gherwig. And it's all BS.

I actually thought America was not great. Her monologue felt ham fisted and cringey.

I think having her up without Margot is….not great. And I think gosling deserves the nom. He was phenomenal in a role a lot of men wouldn’t even consider

I knew someone on here would be upset about the backlash to yesterday lol. Then again, some men missed the entire point of the movie and cried about the ending

I saw 4 of the 10 Best Picture nominees. That has to be the most I have ever seen in any year.
  • "American Fiction" -- would consider
  • "Anatomy of a Fall" -- zero interest
  • "Barbie" -- saw, great
  • "The Holdovers" -- saw, great
  • "Killers of the Flower Moon" -- I'm sure it's great but my guilt tax was paid this year
  • "Maestro" -- saw, great, my pick for best pic
  • "Oppenheimer" -- saw, good
  • "Past Lives" -- less than zero interest
  • "Poor Things" -- should probably see
  • "The Zone of Interest" -- would see if it were a remake of Mr. Blandings
