Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Ah yes, the deus ex machina conclusion. How could I forget.

The WORST thing about that movie...it had potential. "Copycat" (Sigourney Weaver) did well with the agoraphobe heroine. This movie...ignored everything about that.

Movies watched in May (* Criterion Collection):

Beauty and the Beast, Jean Cocteau (1946) *
My Darling Clementine, John Ford (1946) *
Hamlet, Laurence Olivier (1948) *
The Third Man, Carol Reed (1949) *
Kind Hearts and Coronets, Robert Hamer (1949)

I really enjoyed all of these films.

Saw the Libertine. Tough, tough movie to watch. But if you can survive it, great movie with acting (Depp in particular) being absolutely stellar...and some very intense thought provoking messages.

Ugh.

Just leave some things alone, directors / actors / studios. Go home, Hollywood; you're drunk.

Really. Big Trouble in Little China is an all-time classic. I can't believe it did so poorly at the box office, and is so under the radar even today.

Supposedly, Big Trouble is a re-written version of the intended sequel to Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension(another of my fave films) that was never filmed after BB bombed at the box office. BB director W. D. Richter took that projected screenplay for Buckaroo Banzai Versus The World Crime League, changed characters and stuff around, and came up with Big Trouble.

Two major cult classic films.

I only recently heard this theory about 2 of my favorite movies; it's wonderful and I choose to believe it.

You can riff quotes from those two movies all day long.

Whenever I'm working and there's an announcement of a meeting in the conference room of wherever I'm at, I always yell, "conference room!!!!"

I haven't been to a grocery store in 20 years without saying, "why is there a watermelon there?" At this point my wife answers, "I'll tell you later." (She has also been trained to say "This place has everything" whenever we see a Pier One Imports.)

Bad Words:

40 year old guy finds loophole in Spelling Bee rules, and competes. Friggin' hilarious, and surprisingly touching at times. Bateman plays the a-hole character perfectly.

The World’s Fastest Indian (2005)

You know Anthony Hopkins as the evil Hannibal Lecter, but in this film he gives a warm and heartfelt performance portraying real life New Zealand motorcycle legend Burt Munro who set a land speed record in 1967 on a hand built 1920 Indian. It’s a story of never giving up on your dream even in the face of ridicule and opposition. Hopkins’ performance turns what could have been just another schmaltzy formulaic storyline into true gold. You’ll be cheering for Burt/Anthony by the end!

Feel good movie on Netflix.

A Single Man:

Gay professor plans to commit suicide after his lover's death. Boring, pretentious, artsy piece of crap. Made it halfway through or so before I had enough. Terrible.

The Music Never Stopped:

I cannot put into words how awesome, how emotional, how good this movie is. That's my review.

Sounds like I'd like it.

Why on earth were you watching this? They could have put on the poster, "not for Brenthoven."

Spy.

I owed Dr. Mrs. Kepler for the 4th Riddick movie, and she kidnapped me. As God is my witness, it did not suck. MM is not a terrible actress, the supporting cast was enjoyable, and the writing was a decent Bond parody. Solid B, which for a movie like this is stratospheric. Also: the guy who plays Aldo is great.

A friend mentioned the movie to me, and the premise did sound interesting. I was warned it was ultra-depressing, which it was, but that was not the issue I had with it.

Barbecue (French)

50 year old guy has a heart attack, goes into DGAF mode. The full summary overstates/overhypes the storyline, but I thought it was a solid 6/10. Good "friendship is what it is" type movie. Lambert Wilson (the Merovingian in the Matrix movies, where he was brilliant) stars in this, hence my reason for giving it a whirl.

At $10 a pop, roughly, that means about 60 people went to see this piece of crap. 10 theaters, maybe two showings a day, so three people at each showing, maybe.

When I saw it advertised I assumed it was going straight to video, and then they'd distribute it to 24-hour sports networks that are always short on programming. I can't believe they actually thought it was going to make money in theaters. That's up there with the "Atlas Shrugged" folks for self-delusion.
