Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

When I saw it advertised I assumed it was going straight to video, and then they'd distribute it to 24-hour sports networks that are always short on programming. I can't believe they actually thought it was going to make money in theaters. That's up there with the "Atlas Shrugged" folks for self-delusion.

Atlas Shrugged made money. There was even a sequel, basically covering the second half of the book, though much of the cast changed, according to IMDB. I didn't both researching the reasons for the changes, figuring it was most likely either philisophical or money.

IIRC the first one broke about even; the second one took a big loss ($4M sales on $20M production costs): http://www.altfg.com/blog/movie/atlas-shrugged-part-2-box-office-dagny-taggart/

The third one (yep, you read that right) is going to be self-financed, which means they can't find anybody dumb enough to put their own money into it. The market works!

edit: the third one was already released.

The Rotten Tomatoes reviews on the three are:

Atlas Shrugged I: 11%
Atlas Shrugged II: 4%
Atlas Shrugged III: the much coveted 0%

Rotten Tomatoes has Jurassic World at 73% right now. It's looking like this might actually be popcorn fun and not a complete dud.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

One of the bad reviews that I read said that it wasn't great like last summer's Godzilla...

I thought Godzilla was very pedestrian.

I want to see Jurassic World on the big screen.

It was pretty disappointing. You would think a movie with a $160M budget could spend more than $20 on the screenplay. I sure hope they didn't pay more than that for the steaming pile they filmed.

Just make these with no actors. The characters are completely useless -- we're going to see the 'splosions, dammit.

Oh, I am so seeing that...

Pretty sure Netflix doesn't have it, so I'll have to find another way to watch it. I really want to see it, too.

Goon 2 (or whatever title they are going to roll with) will start filming soon. Kim Coates tweeted that he will return in his role as a coach. :)

It was fantastic and everything a summer blockbuster should be. Truth be told I went mostly for the kids expecting to be only mildly amused and instead this will be the first movie I see in the theater twice since I don't even remember. It was over the top in all the right places and the thrills for me make it every bit as fun as the original. My 11 y.o. who wasn't even born before at least the second if not the third but has watched them all said he almost peed himself (which for him was said beautifully tongue-in-cheek knowing full well we know his love of the franchise) and it was priceless.

I thought Goon sucked. Really sucked.

Finally saw Pitch Perfect 2. It was as most others have said. Not as good as the first, but still a lot of fun and good overall. The main problem I have is that Das Sound Machine totally creamed them, but because movie they didn't.

Sounds like a cool kid. I should send him a Sioux cap before he is imprinted beyond help.

But then, he wasn't even born the last time the Sioux . . . Never mind.

I guess Jurassic World makes an ok popcorn flick. If I was a kid, it would have been awesome. But I'm not and everything that happens is given away beforehand leaving no surprises.

you're very right about there being no surprised, I would say it's better than just okay. The movie was a lot of fun, and Star Lord played his role extremely well.

What I did not like about my viewing was the presence of small children in the theater. By small, I'm talking a few different groups of children under 8 years old. The parents of those kids are going to be dealing with nightmares for the next few nights or weeks. Some of the people dying in that movie were killed in quite graphic scenes.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Outside of Pratt the rest of the cast was pretty terrible imho. Opie's Daughter was brutal in every scene she was in and had zero chemistry with Pratt when they were together. The two brothers were annoying as hell...like when the one who was autistic half the time talked about their parents maybe getting divorced (which was a plot point that had no value and never came up again) and the older brother basically douching him out over it. Everyone else was either completely stupid, evil or both. The movie should have been called "Chris Pratt and the Island of Bad Ideas". ;)

The last half hour was a lot of fun and made up for most of the other 2 hours at least. Personally though I wish the dinosaurs had killed all the people and then fought. Whoever wrote the script must have been drunk or never met a person in real life because not one of the characters was likable or believable. It was an island of Nedrys :D I put this a half step above Jurassic Park 3 but leagues behind the original.
