The first PA was pretty good. The sequels did not to be made. The 2nd one was lazy, and I didn't even bother with the 3rd. I think there may even be a 4th.

There's another one about an alien visitation in Canada which had some creepy moments. There are a couple scenes in PA that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck -- it captured the vulnerability of sleep which we can all identify with.

The remake looks terrible...and not the good kind of terrible like the original.

If you look hard enough in the remake trailer you can see one dude from the original...

The Theory Of Everything

Stephen Hawking bio-pic. Eddie Redmayne was friggin' OUTSTANDING in his role of Hawking. Many times, an actor will try and act awkward, and overdo it, or not come across as awkward enough. It's quite a fine line. Cumberbatch nailed it in The Imitation Game, and Redmayne nailed it here (pre-ALS diagnosis part). The post-ALS part...talk about committing to the part (read he actually altered his spine alignment during shooting, because of how often he was in awkward positions).

Definitely recommend.

What We Do in the Shadows. Mocumentary of New Zealand vampires. Drags in parts, but has genuine character and an unexpected amount of true feeling. Has Jermaine and Murray from Flight of the Conchords. B+.

The Killer:

Doves, a church, and a lot of Mexican standoffs. Yup, total John Woo movie. It was a decent afternoon time-killer, although the production quality is Bloodsport quality (no surprise, though). If you're a Woo fan, go for it. Might not do much for anyone else.

Columbus Circle:

I'm positive the Lifetime Channel has made better movies than this. They are along the same plots, that's for sure.

I saw Red Army after I saw the 30 For 30 documentary. I was a little surprised that Fetisov was the centerpiece of that movie as well.

In retrospect I think this was due to a number of factors. First was his ability to communicate. He clearly had the best English language skills of any of the major Soviet stars from that era. Second, he was really the only one who would respond with something other than 3 word sentences. Getting a response out of most of the rest of those guys was like pulling teeth.

I'm sure his role in opening up the NHL to Soviet players also made him attractive. Most of the rest of those guys never got the chance.

Regarding the Point Break remake...


As far as what we see in the trailer... doesn't really resemble the first movie other than superficially.


The first movie to me is essentially a surfer movie.

This one is something different.

Yes and that something different looks horrible :) The movie could have been called anything and it would still be horrible :)

Well, yes and no. Spoiler that I won't hide, just so none of you are suckered into watching this crap: the evil man has an evil girlfriend (who are new neighbors of our heroine) and they are conning our heroine out of her fortune. EG plays an abuse victim who won't leave her EB, b/c no money to live. Heroine gives her the password to her bank acct (yup....yup......) and then EG fake shoots EB but EB is still trying to attack, and Heroine goes ballistic and actually stabs EB in the back many a time, really killing him.

Then there's more bullsh* at the bank with EG, and Heroine figures it out, and frames EG for a nice tidy ending.

Watched the Best Foreign Language Academy Award winner for 2015 today. First Polish film to win the Oscar.

Ida, Pawel Pawlikowski (2013)

Story of a novice who is about to become a nun in 1962. Just before she takes her vows she learns from an estranged Aunt that she is actually Jewish and that her parents were killed during the German occupation of Poland. She and this Aunt, a worldly-wise Communist judge, set off on a journey to find out the truth about her parents. Filmed in black & white, it is a rich, poetic, moving film about the young novitiate finding out who she really is and what she really believes. Excellent film!
