Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I don't think Groundhog Day (which I very much enjoy) is as underrated as What About Bob.

"I'm SAILING!!"

"Baby step to the elevator..."

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Of course, with today being February 2, AMC aired Groundhog Day. As well-regarded as it is, I still think it is under-rated by many.

The only intelligent RomCom made since about 1940.

Stonehearst Asylum:

A doctor goes to work for an asylum, and is shocked at what he finds. Ben Kingsley is friggin' awesome in his role. Just owns it as Dr Lamb, the residing superintendent at the place. Very solid movie.

Watched Escape Plan last night... I want that 2 hours of my life back...

Being a Stallone/Arnold pic, I was hoping for some entertainment... A good popcorn flick with action where I didn't have to think much... Didn't deliver on either account... They went with a basic 80s Action plotline, complete with plot holes that you can fly a 747 through... Disappointing...

Roger Ebert listed it in his "great movies" collection, and back when The International Journal of Psychoanalysis was publishing in English, there was a lengthy scholarly article on how profoundly well the psychology in that movie worked.

Congress selected it to be put in their film collection in the Library. So the government doesn't underrate it at least!

I saw an article once that tried to estimate how much time he spent there. To be able to master all the skills he did it was thought to be about 40,000 years.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Saw a sort of meme where it was suggested that Hollywood announce a sequel to Groundhog Day, and then just re-release the original. :D

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I just found out Insomnia (Robin Williams) was a remake of a movie starring Stellan Skarsgard. Yeah, moved THAT original to the top of my list.

Joe

I think Slappy mentioned this movie, and frankly, I found it incredibly dis-jointed. I get what it was going for, and it did deliver, but it could have been a half hour longer to flesh out backstories.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Finally saw Groundhog D-Day, a.k.a. Edge of Tomorrow. Loved the plotline; everything else was secondary and I think everybody (except Cruise probably, but it didn't matter) understood that.

One question, though: (spoiler) why wouldn't the alphas just kill themselves when they gained valuable new information?

Overall rating: solid A. Creativity and plot: A+. If you're like me and you try to avoid everything Captain Scientology is in, make an exception.

And my response in white.

From what I gathered in the dialog, they basically did that until being accidentally killed in a manner they couldn't control just twice out of the hundres or thousands of replays.

My beef was when Cage and Rita break into the General's office, why not get the info then and there and then immediately reset the day? It would've been so much smarter than trying to break out of the office after the fact, and they'd be off again.

Follow-up question in white: Then when the Alpha sees them at the Louvre, why didn't it immediately self-terminate to restart the day, so either the Omega would be moved or at least would be ready for them?

If it were to self-terminate then, that would just lead to the same cycle repeating. The Alpha would know that one of the humans has this ability to also reset, and therefore can avoid falling for a trap they would set. Eventually, you just have to play it out to the end or you're in a perpetual stalemate.

The Mimics had already sussed out that Cage was The One. From their POV they only need to capture him alive and take his blood. Of course we already know they only need to kill him, since he's already out.

I think you guys are fine to just post your questions. The movie is well past spoiler range.
