Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

While not a comedy (well, some parts are funny), Natural Born Killers is a great romantic movie. :D

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Grading of all RomComs in history:

Groundhog Day: A
Fifty First Dates: B+
When Harry Met Sally: B
all others: F

Note: RomComs begin in 1970. Prior to that directors and writers were competent enough to make great movies that also happened to involve romance and comedy. For example:

Bringing Up Baby: A+
The Philadelphia Story: A+
His Girl Friday: A+
It Happened One Night: A+
I also enjoyed The Apartment, The Lady Eve(1941 Barbara Stanwyck & Henry Fonda.) Gotta have TCM. ;)

Big reason I love Netflix. TONS of old movies. Even stuff from the early 1910s, etc.

I didn't know that. I like Netflix but I haven't figured out a good way to browse it yet.

I discovered the other day that there is a senior citizens discount at the local Bijou.

Obviously rate every movie you've ever seen, even if you haven't watched in ON Netflix.

I also took a bit of time (nothing outlandish, maybe 15-20 minutes here and there) and went through top 100 lists of reputable sites, etc, and added to my queue/rated depending on if I've seen them or not.

I have found that once you watch a movie of a certain style/genre, VERY similar ones pop up right away under "Recommended For (Name)" for a while, like Netflix knows you're in the mood for that type of movie for a few days. After a few days, it kind of reverts back to all the movies you have rated and compiles the styles/etc. that you like.

Edit: pretty much any movie I've seen in the last couple years that were made before 1970 or so I've seen on Netflix.

I have a list of the AFI Top 100 that I've been slowly checking off. I recommend doig that.

That is a very good start.

Also, some don't know, that as SOON as a movie is released in theaters, chances are you can tag it on Netflix. Also a good thing, as some movies slip through the cracks with me, as I want to see them, but not in an OMG way, so I forget about them.

I would put High Fidelity on my top rom-com list. The list starts with When Harry Met Sally though. TPB is a great movie, though I agree that I don't think it's a romantic comedy. Stranger than Fiction would be up near the top as well.

Yeah, I have to admit, despite Cusack being ultimate-Cusack, that was a pretty good movie.

What is TPB?

For me, nothing will top My Man Godfrey as a classic "rom-com", though I will grant that other movies might be tied.

I would not have placed Stranger than Fiction in this genre, it is one of my all-time favorite movies. Groundhog Day is one of the greatest movies ever, and I would not consider it a "rom-com" either.

What about Out of Sight?

And I do like Serendipity and even Kate and Leopold. Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill.
