Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Viggo Mortensen nailed it in "Eastern Promises."

From IMDB:
One day after shooting, Viggo Mortensen went to a pub without washing off his tattoos or even changing out of his costume. He claims that some of the patrons became very frightened of him, assuming he was a real member of Vory v Zakone (my note: Russian mafia)
IMHO Sean Bean nails it in Legends.

Groundhog Day. Today's the day for it....

Rita: [Phil has described several people in the diner] What about me, Phil? Do you know me too?
Phil: I know all about you. You like producing, but you hope for more than Channel 9 Pittsburgh.
Rita: Well, everyone knows that!
Phil: You like boats, but not the ocean. You go to a lake in the summer with your family up in the mountains. There's a long wooden dock and a boathouse with boards missing from the roof, and a place you used to crawl underneath to be alone. You're a sucker for French poetry and rhinestones. You're very generous. You're kind to strangers and children, and when you stand in the snow you look like an angel.
Rita: [in wonder] How are you doing this?
Phil: I told you. I wake up every day, right here, right in Punxsutawney, and it's always February 2nd, and there's nothing I can do about it.

Grading of all RomComs in history:

Groundhog Day: A
Fifty First Dates: B+
When Harry Met Sally: B
all others: F

Note: RomComs begin in 1970. Prior to that directors and writers were competent enough to make great movies that also happened to involve romance and comedy. For example:

Bringing Up Baby: A+
The Philadelphia Story: A+
His Girl Friday: A+
It Happened One Night: A+

You've obviously never seen The Philadelphia Story or The Sure Thing. Both A+.

You replied before I added my footnote.

I have not, however seen The Sure Thing. I take it I should?

The Sure Thing is Rob Reiner's second film. First Rom Com. It built the house that When Harry Met Sally is built on. When Harry Met Sally might be the best rom com of all time.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I'm surprised you don't like things like Jerry Maguire, Pretty Woman, Roxanne, etc.

I absolutely loved Roxanne. Much more than the rest listed.

The problem is all the modern ones pretty much blow compared to the (4) old movies Kep listed. Those 4 are the gold standard. That being said When Harry Met Sally and The Sure Thing will always be my two modern faves. The ones you list are ok but not my cup of tea I guess.

Roxanne was good, you're right, I forgot that. Call it a B minus.

Jerry Maguire was execrable. Pretty Woman was insipid.

While true, it's an unfair competition, because like I said those movies weren't rom coms, they burst the bounds of all genres -- they are "Film Unlimited" to paraphrase Harold Bloom's wonderful expression about Hamlet.

There deserves to be a RomCom niche, it just makes Stugeon's Law look optimistic. There are other genres that are 99% crap too: action movies, for example.

The Sure Thing is a funny movie. A little surprised you haven't seen that one. It wouldn't shock me that thirty-somethings haven't seen it, but it seems like it would have been in your wheelhouse.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I feel like we need to have a thread dedicated to our top movies. Like top 27 or something.

I don't know if that's necessarily true. I really liked Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, which candidly is one of the few watchable De Niro movies of the last decade. And, of course, The Princess Bride makes any list I compile of favorite romcom movies.

Well, TPB is a "Tale of True Love and High Adventure," so it doesn't really count as a RomCom.

"Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True Love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest Ladies. Snakes*. Spiders*. Pain. Death. Brave men. Cowardly men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."

In all honesty, though, I would argue that The Princess Bride is very close in spirit to the old screen classics. The book, in particular, is an homage to the screen adventure stories that had true love as one of many threads.

But TPB is the opposite of a RomCom. A RomCom answers the question, "how do you find love?" TPB, like Haddaway, answers the question, "what is love?"

* Not featured in movie. If you have read the book, can you remember them without cheating? I could not remember the snake.

I found Silver Linings Playbook to be the biggest fraud ever made. It was so over the top unbelievable it made me want to puke.

The Princess Bride is in a category all by itself. Wonderful film.

Agreed on 50FD (never would have guessed you would like an Adam Sandler movie :D ) and His Girl Friday.

Though I'm also partial to Love Actually, 10 Things I Hate About You, and a few others.
