Re: Movie Thread #50: Godzilla gives us permission to nuke our enemies

The third Austin Powers movie is bad but s special exception must be made for Goldmember as a character:

“I like gooooooooooooooold!”
“Would you like a shmoke und a pancake?

A what?

A shmoke und a pancake. You know, a flapjack und a shigarette? No? Shigar und a waffle? No? Pipe und a crepe? No? Bong und a blintz? No? Well, then there ish no pleashing you.”

Outside of that ONE bit, Goldmember SUCKED ARSE.

Austin Powers sucked (the first one was ok).

And so did all of those ****ing terrible spoof movies. Those were some of the worst commercial dreck to ever come out of Hollywood.

I'm pretty sure they were aimed at tweens. In all honesty, it was that kind of humor. Porkys meets Tom Green.

I loved the first Austin Powers. The "Swinging London" opening is one of the most fun, joyful, on target movie openings I've ever seen.

You need to see it with eyes that still see Mike Myers as wittingly playing an over-the-top stupid character for laughs, not (as we learned) because that's all he can manage.

But I like The Love Guru. :( It gave us Justin Timberlake doing a terrible Quebecois accent. And properly mocked FOX Sports and hockey broadcasters in general.

*Edit* Also, at 14% it firmly meets the XKCD Movie Challenge of a movie generally sh*t upon that I like.

I liked the first two Austin Powers. Goldmember was okay for one viewing, but that was it.

Goldmember was also the source of one of the most niche pieces of bar trivia I've ever seen. "Who played Dr. Evil in the movie trailer parody scene?"

God no.

1. A+
2. B-
3. F

Much like MM's career.

He was great in Bohemian Rhapsody as the cranky, old record label executive. He might have been brought on for this line alone, "We need a song teenagers can bang their heads to in a car. Bohemian Rhapsody is not that song."

I gotta admit, it sure does.

And to be fair I've never seen it, I've only heard the stories whispered around campfires at night.

"Why, Mr. Peters! You're naked!"

"Yes Tobi, all these years I've been secretly naked underneath my clothes."

"The pinnacle of Western Civilization is the horse head bookend."

"Great physical beauty can be a handicap, too."

He pimped the heck out of that little cameo on the Jimmy Circuit.

He's trying to claw his way back and I hope he makes it. Wayne's World gave me honest joy. He's obviously a very smart man. I have no idea what happened, but I assume it's the old story: you get so big they stop editing you. It must take superhuman modesty to have the world at your feet and still tell yourself every morning "I am just as full of sh-t as everyone else."

From all accounts he is hard to work with. People don't seem to like him...

Saw Four Weddings and a Funeral last night for the first time since it came out. It holds up very well. Also it's the first time I've seen it married. It is a much, much better movie than I remember it as. For a RomCom it's practically PhD quality intelligence in writing and direction, and the acting is great.

I think I have to elevate this above When Harry Met Sally to the best* RomCom ever made.

* In the modern age of movies for children (post-1969). In the classic age of movies for adults the greatest RomComs are:

It Happened One Night
Singing in the Rain
Philadelphia Story
Bringing Up Baby
His Girl Friday

I probably have mentioned it before, but "My Best Friend's Wedding" isn't horrible, and I actually kind of enjoyed it. I think Julia Roberts playing a total bit* helped it quite a bit. Is it great? Nah. Would I turn it off? Nah.

I shall turn in my Man Card for the next day.

The horsehead bookend thing. :D

"My mother also told me sex was bad and dirty...but only with my father! With everyone else, she said it was great!"

Been a few years, I need to re-watch that one this October.

It's my favorite Julia movie. Horseteeth was the closest I had to a boyhood celeb crush.

How can Ghost not be on this list?!?!?

How can Ghost not be on this list?!?!?

What a horrible cheesy, obvious-heart-string POS movie. The only upside of seeing that movie, is that it showed exactly what I hate in romantic movies so I can avoid similar ones in the future.
