More about expansion for women's hockey

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

Stephen Ross has donated $200 million to the University of Michigan of which half is to go to the athletic department. Any thoughts as to weather or not the school may use any of this money start a women's ice hockey program ?

The athletics campus in Ann Arbor is expected to be named the Stephen M. Ross Athletic Campus.

"Stephen Ross' vision has always been about the ability of facilities to transform the human experience," Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman said in the statement. "He understands the power of well-conceived spaces, and his generosity will benefit generations of Michigan students, faculty and coaches."

According to lists from The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Ross' gift is the third biggest to a higher education facility in 2013. Earlier this year, it was announced that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg would donate $350 million to Johns Hopkins University, and in July the A. Eugene Brockman Charitable Trust gave a $250 million donation to Centre College in Kentucky.

Ross' $200 million donation is among the 30 single largest donations to a U.S. college or university, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

In Michigan, specific projects will be announced in the coming months, the school said. In addition, scholarships will be available to Ross students.

The Ross School of Business proposes to create new spaces for students to study, collaborate and connect with each other, faculty and potential employers. Classrooms will include advanced technology to support in-person and virtual collaboration.

With the additional funding, University of Michigan Athletics plans to improve its campus to help athletes succeed on the playing field and in the classroom, improve its facilities and build sites to be a destination for local, state, national and international competitions.

"I think it means a whole lot to the university as a whole when you look at $100 million for academics and $100 million for athletics," Michigan football coach Brady Hoke told reporters Wednesday.

Can't remember where I read or heard it, but according to Red, "Not as long as I'm coaching here"

People in places like Michigan and Colorado should be kind of ashamed that none of the schools in state offer D1 Women's hockey, the only option for their top players is to leave. If that quote was made by a coach in Minnesota he would have been fired in a week regardless of his past success, could you imagine if he said the same about a religious or ethnic group. It is time for traditional men's programs like CC, Denver, Michigan, and Michigan State to rethink things and run the Archie Bunker types out on a rail. There are just to many girls who play in those states to completely ignore them.

OK on Michigan, not as sure about Colorado.

In Colorado CC is a D3 school with one allowable exception each for men's AND women's sports. Their men's exception is, as we all know, hockey. They already have a women's exception, a highly regarded lacrosse program. CC's option would be to drop the lacrosse back to D3 to go D1 in women's hockey. Otherwise two D1 sports would require them to go D1 in all sports.

If CC isn't going D1 there isn't going to be any particular pressure on Denver to go D1. You can declare yourself for the dance but who are going to be your dance partners?

As for Michigan, they truly and completely have NO EXCUSE.

And it isn't just UM and MSU. How about Western, Northern, Tech, Lake Superior and Ferris?

"As for Michigan, they truly and completely have NO EXCUSE." My point exactly. And now we have about a hundred million reasons why .

CC's D1 Women's sport is Soccer, not Lacrosse.

When my D was looking at schools, I questioned Mich. Tech (since I was am an alum) and got the response that they had no interest in women's hockey.

College Hockey Opportunity - New Women's Team

Lindenwood University-Belleville in Belleville, Illinois is adding a fully funded varsity level women's hockey team for the 2014-15 season. They will compete at the ACHA D1 level and will petition to join the CCWHA. The team will have the same perks and benefits of the other school NAIA teams including equipment, first class travel, tuition financial assistance, equipment mangers, athletic training staff, etc. Visit the following links for more info on the school and its athletic programs. http://lindenwoodlynx.com/index.aspx http://belleville.lindenwood.edu/ Contact head coach Craig Buntenbach at cabunten@gmail.com for more info.

Not sure what to make of everything here...

Yikes, that is going to cause some confusion. However, and not to be a snob, but it is club hockey if they are competing in ACHA Division 1.

Lindenwood is in Missouri I believe so this must be a satellite campus? I know the CCWHA is an ACHA Div I league including Adrian College, Michigan State, and Ohio State among others. The word "varsity" is a little confusing, but other than that, this is a club team. I'm sure no NCAA Div I talent will accidentally end up there....

Arlan and I discuss possible D-I expansion in our WW column this week. It's on the women's front page.

Interesting thoughts. Perhaps (besides Merrimack which is a positive), we could just start with Holy Cross and Sacred Heart actually behaving like Division 1 teams before we consider others starting programs? You said dreaming.... :)

As an HC alum, I'd say you are preaching to the choir...

Don't think that will ever happen with SC. Note sure about HC. As others have said, the more likely D1 expansion is further west, like in Michigan. With Wayne State gone there is a void, and schools like Michigan and Michigan state have Men's programs and deep pockets to be able to fund it.

The talk of UM and MSU women's hockey has been endless and it's not gonna happen. Need one guy to leave and need the other program to get better and probably upgrade their facility. They are really not the hockey schools others think. Add to that, there is a chance OSU could dump hockey.

It's not that there is no interest it's that they would need an infusion of money. I personally know several people in the athletic offices and Tech is always trying to raise it's women's ratio but at what cost. Women's teams there tend to be fairly successful.

The thing most people forget is that most institutions, thanks to Title IX, have equality in scholarships, or already have more women's teams than men's.

And technically there are several ways to meet Title IX. Not just equal schollies
