More about expansion for women's hockey

Both Becker and William Smith are varsity teams with full-time coaching, etc. William Smith will be playing games this coming year (spent last year recruiting) and Becker will spend this year recruiting and start up in 2015.

Quite a few D3s have added programs over the last few years - or for next year. Good to see there's more places for girls to play post-HS age.

Recently added (or coming soon):
Merrimack (D1 2015)
SUNY Canton (D3 2013 - non-NCAA I think?)
William Smith (D3 2014)
Daniel Webster (D3 2015)
JWU (D3 2015)
Becker (D3 2015)
Morrisville (D3 2015)

and probably a few others that I'm missing
Both North Shore (MA) Salem State and Endicott will start varsity in 15-16

That's two schools with potential SUNYAC ties. Canton could go full SUNYAC and Morrisville is an associate member for Men's Ice Hockey. The last version of the SUNYAC bylaws I've seen had a clause where if a certain percentage of members compete in a sport they then have a conference championship. I believe that with the current number of members with the percentage mentions makes the number of teams seven. If Canton goes SUNYAC that would make 6 SUNYAC schools with Women's Ice Hockey. Could a women's team in Morrisville make a SUNYAC women's conference.

Scott - If so, w/o Elmira in the league, just print the cardinal banner now.

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

No excuses for Michigan now after one roadblock resigns and new President! ! Promotion of the program has begun earlier this year.

and almost 15 years earlier?..... This happened....

Michigan! It's time to live up to being "the Leaders and Best!"

Possible as the new prez is from Brown

Why does Notre Dame not have a women's team? They have the cash. So....?

Beautiful rink...Too bad the Compton family didn't stipulate a women's team when they donated the money to build it. Would love to know if it's on ND's radar.
Michigan has enough problems with their beloved football team to worry about women's hockey!

I spoke with a major ND booster a year or so ago and he said there is movement being made towards a women's team but (IIRC) it is predominantly a Title IX issue.

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

“As a female hockey player, the number one thing you have to look at is academics, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous that there’s not a women’s D-I team to pursue in the state of Michigan,” Trubiano said. “It’s embarrassing, actually.” http://www.michigandaily.com/sports/womens-hockey-persists-club-sport

Agree!

“They ended up taking water polo,” McDowell said. “The anecdotal information was that water polo was going to be a $350,000 a year investment (all-inclusive), whereas ice hockey would have been a $750,000-800,000 deal.”

For comparison, Michigan football's head coach earned $4,154,000 in 2013.

It's worth looking at page 5 here: http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/11/usa_today_michigans_brady_hoke.html Particularly the table Girls / Women by District. Most USA Hockey districts w/ solid girls numbers field a lot of D1 and D3 teams. Michigan is way behind the curve, especially for it's geographic location. Pacific and Rocky Mtn districts could use some collegiate women's hockey too, although the numbers are spread over a vastly larger area. Without some geographical nexus, D1 women's hockey would require a big travel budget and a lot of long trips for the teams.

Maybe there's hope if ND's men's rugby program gets the same consideration as a full NCAA sport (it's currently known as "Olympic" level)
They even have a brand new rugby field!
Well...guess we shouldn't hold our breath

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

Been discussed in the men's forum and more or less been laughed at, but you never know.

Every program had their beginning at some point. If you're a true hockey fan you wish them well. And who knows, it might influence another Pac10 school to start a program, then maybe another...

Re: More about expansion for women's hockey

Not likely, as they look to be Title IX compliant by a long shot. with plenty of women's programs to offset the 18 scholarships of a men's hockey program.

Not be Captain Obvious, but directly from the article:

"The creation of the program will necessitate the addition of a women's sport to remain in compliance with Title IX, at a cost of $1 million to $1.5 million. The university is still researching which sport might be the best fit, with lacrosse and rowing among the possibilities."

Interesting. I saw the USCHO announcement, which didn't mention that which you quoted. On the bright side, men's D1 hockey is expanding, which is good for the sport overall.
