MN Hockey - "We're So SPECIAL!"

I believe they do have a 1929 banner but it is not in line with the other national championship banners. It is also not gold like the rest. IIRC it is a maroon banner which is hanging in the NCAA runner up line. I think there is a big ten banner with multiple years on it as well near by.

Second point, I agree completely.

For the record, it's all his fault this squabble shifted from where it started in the WI thread to take over multiple threads at the same time. I bet he takes a mark of pride in that. :p

You're right Tiggs. They do have a banner for the 1929 Championship, but it's a different color than the other six. Thanks for clarifying that :)

Uh, I did not start this thread. Nor am I the only one contributing to keeping Dubbie "occupied" here.

Do I enjoy keeping this thread going? Absolutely. If he doesn't post his provincial garbage here, he's going to do it somewhere else anyway.

Again, this thread was created specifically to "debate" these silly points. No need to read it if you don't enjoy an inane debate that continues to chase its own tail.

I don't necessarily enjoy the subject, but I'm still finding slight pleasure in keeping Dubbie going although it's waning...

Not this thread, but in an attempt to clear the WI thread you did deliberately bait a line in the MN thread. Which of course worked and the exact same debate was going on in 2 threads at a time. This thread was created to stop that from happenening, which it almost did.

I'll admit I like coming here. It is entertaining. But I don't like getting drawn in with such a "serious" tone as I did responding to FS23. But such is the nature of such things, so I'm all about rolling with it. I have no ill will towards you for your role in this, but won't hesitate to point it out or mock it either. :D

Yes I did and that was just to make a point and in truth, spread a little of Dubbie's pain to his own people. As you know, I'm not really ever in your thread and if I am, it's not to troll.

Game threads? These threads? I'm all in! And it's just for fun

I believe that we understand each other. :)

Re: MN Hockey - "We're So SPECIAL!"

I can't tell how serious this post is, so take this response accordingly. Using that same logic you could throw out the games any year your team played AA 4+ times in a year because they are sub par competition. So why don't we throw out the points from AA in the standings? There was a tournament and the best teams in the AAU were playing in it. What's the difference if they were college or not?

I'm not sure what "logic" you are trying to use comparing AAU games with games against UAA, but I don't think you got the point. Nobody raises a banner for beating UAA (well, maybe St. Cloud, but I'll have to check back on that).

Another problem there is the best teams in the AAU were certainly not playing in the tournament. For example, Yale destroyed the Brock Hall Milkmen (that's right, the Gophers beat the Milkmen for the AAU title) that season, just a few weeks prior to the AAU tournament. Yale was a good team that year (beat Brock Hall by a bigger margin than Minnesota), and would have given Minnesota a run for their money had they met. Unfortunately there was not an NCAA Tournament, so we will never know how a potential matchup (Yale wasn't even the best team out East that year, so they may not have even received an invite to a hypothetical NCAA Tourney) would have gone.

EDIT: And yes, I fully realize that Yale lost to the Gophers earlier in the 1939-1940 season...although I believe they played Minnesota closer than just about anyone else that season, despite both games being in Minnesota.

if you guys had figured out back then how to recruit over age Canadians, and had won two AAU titles, then we would see 2>1 here every day.

At least it would be an apples to apples comparison. Of course, North Dakota's program started the season prior (1946-1947) to the NCAA Tournament, so we could have, at most, only won one AAU title.

Your club team could have participated in the AAU, correct?

Re: MN Hockey - "We're So SPECIAL!"

Is there a website that has information about the AAU hockey tournament or "championships"? I did a google search and didn't turn up anything (granted, I didn't spend a ton of time looking). Just curious who else won these tournaments, how long they ran, etc...

No. They didn't have the money for a coach, let alone for a trip out East to play in the tournament. Plus, I believe the AAU tourney was invite only, so they would have had to receive an invitation.

Good luck. I've looked for a long time, and have found next to nothing as to who won AAU tournaments. All I know is that "Cleveland" won in 1939 (beating Minnesota*), and the Gophers won in 1940. I would love to find more information about the tournaments to see if any other colleges played in this thing.

* Does Minnesota hang a runner up banner for their 2nd place finish in the 1939 AAU Tournament?

They still could have, had they wanted to spend the resources. They had the opportunity just chose not to exercise it.

My point was you're hung up on irrelevent data with your statement about it not being college competition. What difference does that make? Who was to say the college teams were better than club teams? Especially when they are all goverened by the same body... the AAU.

Me. Brock Hall & Oates sucked.

Re: MN Hockey - "We're So SPECIAL!"

Don't feel bad, I don't remember anyone who I meet. But you would be wise to not question what I know of Pre-Cold War East Coast hockey teams. I've pretty much have an encyclopedic knowledge of them.

I think I explained pretty adequately that college hockey wasn't then what it was even 40-50 years ago, so the term "college team" wasn't the same, and the line between college teams and club teams wasn't what you think it was.

I wasn't disagreeing with you in that regard. That being said, you have no idea what I think the difference between college teams and club teams were back in the 1930's and 1940's. You solely know what I think of Brock Hall as a legitimate team, and the AAU Tournament as a legitimate tournament.

Do you know if Minnesota hangs a 1939 AAU Runner-up Banner?

Sorry, I meant "You" in general terms, not to refer to you specifically.

I am not 100% sure if they hang a runner-up banner for 1939. I haven't looked for it. I only am aware that they hang a championship banner for 1940 because it is hanging with their NCAA banners. So is the 1929 championship banner, but it is a different color.

I stand by my stance that the 1940 championship shouldn't be valued any less than our other championships.

No worries.

I would think that if the school truly feels that the AAU Tournament is the equivalent of an NCAA Tournament, then they would have the runner-up banner from 1939 hanging up alongside the NCAA Runner-up banners (assuming they hang individual banners and not a group banner for Runner-ups...as a Sioux fan I'm extremely unfamiliar with hanging Runner-up banners ;)).

At the end of the day, this is all a matter of opinion. I respect Minnesota's ice hockey program, tradition, and success that they have. I do think most Gopher fans respect North Dakota's and Wisconsin's program/tradition/success...at least from the Gopher fans that I know. Of course, all of our fan bases have those select few who are too blinded with rose colored (or green/red/maroon) glasses to see the great accomplishments that these programs have had.

Dirty says they weren't good. So I guess that is the final word on that issue. Who wants to start the petition to take down the banner?

I'm pretty sure there is no 1939 banner and I'm not really sure what the point of hammering away at this issue. There clearly will be no resolution here. Or why the questioning of a major governing body of hockey back then that did send teams to the olympics. Why stop there? How about saying the NCAA didn't know what was going on until... oh let's just say 1964. The NCAA probably got all the bugs worked out by then, so after that everything starts to count for real. See how crazy this can get?

Don't feel bad, I don't remember anyone who I meet. But you would be wise to not question what I know of Pre-Cold War East Coast hockey teams. I've pretty much have an encyclopedic knowledge of them.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind next time. But can I question FS23? :D

EDIT: dang, posting this just after FS23 tries to wrap everything up makes me look like I want to continue this just to argue more. How about we all (including me) just accept his respect for the program and move on. :)
