MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

I think its fair to say that if the Ralph gets sued, UND is going to get sued.

UND is the primary tenant, they have offices inside the building and UND Police are making all the comments to the newspapers.

That being said, it only takes a split second and one unlucky punch for something like this to happen. We all need to prevent this stuff from happening.
I don't think they could win (not saying they can't as I'm not a lawyer...and am not well versed in the North Dakota Century Code) just for the fact that even if it were up to UNDPD, they work for the state, not the University. They may be able to get named because it was their event though, but again, not a lawyer...

I think Dirty is right in that it is bad for UND's image no matter if they are legally responsible or not...

Here's the other side of the story from an alleged eyewitness.

YES!! There is 2 sides 2 every story and from now on I will never believe what the media says until I see what the courts decide!! And since I was there and it is one of my best friends husband in trouble...I KNOW side #2!! His wife is 12 wks pregnant, completely sober and saw the whole thing!! But did they put any of our side in the ... Read Morepaper NO!! A hear say from the dad, from the son who started the whole fight is what is published!!! Maybe they should puclish something from someone that was acutal there!! The guy on crutches came up to our gopher fan friend and started heckling him about the game and how they needed to bring their "A" game tomorrow. Our friend "patted" the guys shoulder and said "yep buddy we played ****ty tonight and hope they do bring their "A" game tomorrow. This guys brother, the victim, then came over to start a fight thinking gopher fan friend was "pushing" his brother in which he wasn't!! Pete then tried to mediate the fight and get them away from each other. The victim then backed Pete away from his brother and our friend and started throwing punches at Pete and he in self defense punched back and the victim fell backwards and unfortunately hit his head on concrete. I agree that fighting was not the right move but when someone punches you not once but twice, what do you do? Instinct is usually self defense to fight back. This whole story is very unfortunate and we feel for the victim and hope he recovers well. But I will continue to also pray for Pete and his family as Pete is a family man and a very well educated one that means well to all. HE IS AN AWESOME FRIEND!!!!

Well, if that testimony is correct than he won't get any jail time at all for what happened.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

I don't know if the above testimony is true, but I'd be wiling to bet some or part of it is. I spent the weekend in GF and was continually harrassed outside the arena, at the hotel, off campus, etc at all times of the day. Interestingly enough, many of the people who felt the need to shout incoherent obscenties and non-rational thoughts were female Sioux fans. It happened at the hotel, walking to the hotel, at restaurants, etc. However, no one in our group thought anything was worth starting a fight. Much of it was quite amusing.

For anyone who says this behavior is always done by Gopher fans - what planet are you on? It's happened to my group at several cities, but none as bad as in GF - not even in Madison. I could go on and on with examples of the things Sioux fans have done over the years, but I don't think its needed. Every fan base has their morons, and none of them should ever escalate to physical violence.

True.

While it makes the outcome of a lawsuit murkier, it doesn't diminish the likelyhood of of a lawsuit being filed. And any parties that were going to be named in an assault situation probably would still be sued in a self-defense situation.

If the second account is 100% true, it shows the danger of breaking up a fight and how much trouble you can cause for yourself and your family by throwing just one punch.

Here's Alanna Rizzo's take from last season.

While Sioux fans have bashed her repeatedly for making these comments, it does point to problems with security, management and fan behavior that appeared to cross the line well before last Friday night.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/sports/2009/01/27/fsns-rizzo-not-a-fan-of-sioux-fans/

Jan. 29, 2009

FSN Rocky Mountain reporter Alanna Rizzo covered last weekend’s DU series at North Dakota, returning to Denver on Sunday with mostly bad memories from her first trip to Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.

“Honestly, if I’m not covering Denver the next time they go there, I would never have any reason in the world to ever go to a North Dakota hockey game,” she told me Tuesday. “(Sioux fans) need to realize they leave a bad taste in an opponent’s mouth, or anyone that’s going to see the arena for the first time.”

Rizzo’s angst stems from obnoxious and seemingly uncontrollable Fighting Sioux fans — particularly adults.

“It was a little too much for too long,” Rizzo said. “It wasn’t the student section as much as the older crowd, right on top of the DU bench, and I stood in the hallway going into their locker room.

“There were a lot of derogatory comments . . . from men and women, young and old, asking me about Coach Gwozdecky’s behavior, calling him a ‘Little Man,’ asking me ‘Why are you really here?’ and ‘I vote for last night’s outfit.’ It’s one thing to cheer for your own team, I’m all for that, but to constantly berate college athletes that are not being paid to play a sport for the constant length of the game was a little much.”

Apparently some members of the Grand Forks police department were in uniform with Sioux fans, not officers.

On Friday, Rizzo said she asked a police officer about one obnoxious fan who was getting out of control — including acting like he was going to poor beer over the glass and onto the DU bench — but the officer did nothing. On Saturday, and after DU coach George Gwozdecky was ejected, she watched Pioneers assistant coach Derek Lalonde ask the referee to stop fans from banging against the glass on the DU bench.

“The referee looked over at the officer standing there, and (the officer) kind of just shook his head,” Rizzo said.

Rizzo said she was treated “extremely gracious, extremely polite and extremely friendly” outside the arena.

“It’s definitely a home-ice advantage, it’s an amazing building, they are very passionate about Sioux hockey, but enough is enough,” she said. “Maybe I’m a little sensitive, but I think the (DU) players responded like champions. It was extremely emotional and there was a lot on the line with the WCHA. I thought Denver played with great professionalism despite all the stuff that was being said to them.”

Rizzo's take always amuses me. It just wreaks of someone that's never been into an opposing arena before. I'd heard that she'd done some work in the Kohl Center before, but IIRC she was working for UW at that time? I might be mistaken there.
Everything that she mentions is something that anyone who's been to a college hockey game before has heard. The goalie/penalty box heckling is all very similar to that, etc.

:)

Regarding the incident this past weekend, those two accounts are pretty varying. I'm sure the police questioned all parties (and any witnesses), so it's weird that this side wasn't mentioned in the newspaper article. I'm sure we'll hear more as the days go by.

No, rizzo had been to only civilized arena before. Just because UND fans do it at the Ralph, does not mean fans do it at other arenas.

I agree. Questioning a guy's suit choice is crossing the line.

Bond $1,000. Not very high, so it looks like version #2 may hold water. Luckily for all concerned it looks like there were a lot of witnesses.

Chwialkowski, 28, of Oslo, Minn., was booked on an aggravated-assault charge. He posted $1,000 bond and was released Sunday. He’s expected to have a preliminary hearing in November.

I have contacted your cousin Dion and he will be coming to return you to the rest of the herd shortly. He is busy Tuesday but then has nothing until Saturday so he'll take care of it then. The rest of the Missing Links are very unhappy with you. They are not going to let you play with the Michelle Bachmann action figure you enjoy so much when you return to Thunder Island.

I love how there are like 10 of you guys that hang out here, and have little inside jokes that aren't that funny, and use them to rip any body who comes in here and isn't in your little group.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Doug is aweome I think he is funnier that heck. I have had a chance to talk to him a couple of time and he is a class act.

I have literally talked to multiple Gopher players who can't stand the guy. I'll just throw that out there. If you you don't like it, throw it back. And does anybody else notcie he can't form complete sentences? Am I the only one who notices this? If your job is to talk and you can't talk, I mean, am I taking crazy pills? I don't get it.

True except for no one knows who the hell jay ferguson is. I hope he's Dubay. That would be awesome.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

I have to assume that your mother hit you over the head with a sugar beet as a child. Have you ever thought that maybe your wife is a retard? If she doesn't' know anything about hockey, how can she tell if he is clueless? she can't so you are a liar, and a moron. Now, you come across as even a bigger retard, because if you think woog is the worse color guy, why would you listen to him? You are too dumb to breath my air, so just shoot yourself, and save some oxygen, OK?

First, the sugar beet thing, not funny. Not even at all. Second, my wife is not a retard. She is actaully very intelligent. And that's the point, even she knows he's an idiot. Third, I wish I knew you or at least knew what you looked like because I garauntee you are the biggest ****ing dork ever. And last, "You are too dumb to breath my air, so just shoot yourself, and save some oxygen"? That comment really makes me angry. Not because I am offended by it, but because it was by far the stupidest thing ever said on this web site, with exception of the sugar beet comment oyu made earlier.
