MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

I am starting to get tired of being told that I am the kind of person that would do something like that.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Almost certainly there is going to be a lawsuit and you can bet UND and the Arena will be named in the suit.

Unfortunate given a couple idiots caused this. While in a perfect world UND/REA could have prevented this from happening, it likely isn't practical. With the number of people filing out of the arena, to be able to spot and stop things like this within the arena would be very difficult. Trying to also do the same thing just outside of the arena is even more difficult.

It would be a very good move for UND to announce a collection for Jason at the November 13 game.

I don't blame you, but the stories are endless. The jerk gopher fans seem to come out in heards to the final five and away games. I am sure that is the only time they can get tickets. When you go to Mariucci it is mostly good nature ribbing and just trying to have fun. I know all fan bases have a-hole fans. The thing is I have never had a problem with another teams fan base except the gophers and I have been to every arena except UAA. For whatever reason they love to get in your face and act tough. I am sure it has to do with having the largest fan base, but sorry it gets old hearing and seeing that crap year after year.

Agreed on all counts, especially the fundraiser.

There is more that WCHA arenas could be doing to protect fan safety. The NFL has set up a Fan Code of Conduct. Fans can lose their season tickets for violating the policy. If fact if they sell their tickets to unruly fans they can lose their seats.

Public Service Announcements about fan behavior also would be a step in the right direction.

Finally, you have to have security outside the arenas after games. If anything goes down, nine times out of ten its between the entrances and the parking lots.

This moron is screwed... I guarantee that the judge he stands in front of is going to be a UND Law alum. I really hope he or she is a hockey fan.

According the article, the defendant is a UND grad.

If alcohol was involved, dg will most certainly be correct.

Who was wearing Gopher attire.

EDIT: Apparently the Herald article only indicates that the perp was with people wearing Gopher attire.

I think the article said the accused was with people wearing gopher attire.

As I posted before, there is likely a fair amount about this incident that we don't yet know. The only things we've heard thus far are comments from the alleged victim's family, and the police.

We don't know which teams either the accused or the injured person were fans of, or how the fight may have started. To take what we do know, which is precious little right now, and leap to any conclusions, especially about the fanbases of either school, is ridiculous, imho.

The injured were Sioux fans, according to the Herald.

According to Smith’s father, Jason Smith and his brother, Aaron Smith, both Sioux fans, were leaving the arena Friday after the game when Jason was “sucker-punched” by a fan.

This could of happened at any NCAA school between any two fanbases.

We've all seen this crap and I think most would agree that the first 10 minutes after the game on the way to the parking lot is where most of it happens.

In this case, no matter who's at fault, there is going to be at least a $100,000+ medical bill, lost wages and hopefully the victim will recover fully (though this is not known yet).

Alcohol almost certainly played a role, but to what extent its hard to ascertain at this point. Nonetheless, UND & the Ralph is legally responsible for what goes down on their property.

WCHA schools would be well advised to follow the NFL's lead and implement these policies, PSA announcements and cell phone texting ideas ASAP.

I think we can be certain that the victim is a Sioux fan, as his dad said his brother made a comment along the lines of "Gophers better bring their "A" game tomorrow night" (yeah, I'm sure that's all that was said). But you are right that the article does not mention the accused's allegiance, only those of his party, and he is an '04 grad of UND.

This is a message board, people always jump to conclusions.:D

I have a hard time believing this could happen at DU. I mean the fans don't even cheer or care if their team wins or loses.:D

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

Being that the site is not owned by UND and may be off campus it seems the Ralph is responsible for security. Maybe?
Every article I've seen quotes "University of North Dakota police."

Sounds like UND Police were the security at the game, not the Grand Forks Police Department.

Whether UND is legally responsible or not doesn't matter that much from an image standpoint. This happened at a game involving their student-athletes in their home arena. If this had happened at a Gopher football game in the Metrodome, people wouldn't say "well, it happened off campus so the University bares no responsibility."

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

The Ralph is not on campus. UNDPD officers work for the state and have jurisdiction anywhere in North Dakota.

EDIT: The Ralph has it's own security.
I think its fair to say that if the Ralph gets sued, UND is going to get sued.

UND is the primary tenant, they have offices inside the building and UND Police are making all the comments to the newspapers.

That being said, it only takes a split second and one unlucky punch for something like this to happen. We all need to prevent this stuff from happening.
