MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Well, consider this: why else would Leddy sign after just one season? Why would Chicago want him so badly when their NHL roster is set on D and their AHL roster hasn't exactly been raided, either? The only reason to expedite a guy going into your feeder system when there's no obvious fast track to the NHL club is you don't trust the team he's on to handle him properly.

Scooby, re: Fischer - he wasn't a #1 pick. First rounder, yes. #1, no. IIRC he was drafted late in the 1st round. The only top pick in Gopher history that I know of is Johnson.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

To be honest, I've never heard AWAL.

My dad was in the Air Force and I heard the term all the time, just never saw it spelled. I asked what it was once and he said "Absent Without Authorized Leave" so I just assumed it was always spelled AWAL. So after AWOLgate broke out I looked it up, and it looks like either one's acceptable but AWOL is the more predominant. Maybe AWAL is an Air Force thing. Or maybe my dad's crazy... wouldn't be the first time.

Now you know....

They will have a bullseye on their back

Don't mention UND with a bullseye on their back... still a sore subject.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Serious question:

Next year, there's a chance that, with a new UMN President, there could be a new AD.

Assuming this becomes a fact and the new AD sits down and looks at the UMN Men's Hockey program...

Do you think Lucia will keep his job? Will Lucia offer to make coaching changes to keep his job?

My obviously well known stance is that Lucia isn't a bad coach and should improve drastically thanks to a clean bill of health. That being said, he won't recover completely with the biggest buffoon left in the WCHA, John Hill, still screwing up the D.

Just wondering.

You should read the discussions on gopherpucklive.com for this information. There are many who think he'll be gone after this season unless he pulls the proverbial rabbit out of the hat.

My guess is Maturi will get a contract extension because Bruininks doesn't want the new president to have to search for a new AD and he actually likes the job Maturi has done. Maturi and Lucia have a good working relationship. All things considered, if the Gophers can have a reasonably respectable season in Maturi's eyes, my guess is Lucia will get his extension too.

What qualifies as respectable?

In a 12 team league, I'd say top 4 regular season finish + NCAA berth.

Unfortunately, I think there's < 50% chance of those things happening.

Well, if you look at the way Maturi communicated his synopsis of last season's crash and burn, it's not far fetched to consider that given the great respect Maturi has for Lucia, he may do that again if the Gophers can eek out an NCAA berth.

I'd concern myself less with things falling from the tree and more with things falling from grace.
Your program wins an NCAA tourney game for the first time, and suddenly you're lecturing us on what our concerns should be?

In OT, to a CCHA team that is not a legendary program.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I happened to be on the road on Wednesday and caught Ryan Cardinal's interview on KFAN. He made the comment, at least a couple of times, about this unhappiness, or lack of trust, at the NHL level of the current MN program.

I'm certainly no Minnesota fan, but Ryan's comments struck me as a personal opinion without a lot of basis in fact.

The Garth Snow comment is well known, as is Snow's own track record. But I can't say I've heard or read comments from any other NHL executives badmouthing the Minnesota program, or the development of their players. Did I miss something?

My view is the perception that the Gopher program doesn't develop players is a bit overblown. The Blackhawks front office recently communicated they were happy with Leddy's development.

Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman said. “His experience at the University of Minnesota has undoubtedly prepared him for the next level and we sincerely appreciate the skills he learned under the tutelage of their coaching staff. We expect Nick to be a force on our blueline in the near future.”

Winner!

And this is coming from the Stanley Cup Champions, not some outfit out of Long Island.

You make it sound like the Islanders are the mafia with that reference.

The mafia is far more competent than the Isles. :p

Where else would a name like "Garth" come from? Unless he had a TV show with a friend named Wayne.
