Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Some good news for Gopher fans:

Bjugstad is having a very good WJC evaluation camp this weekend. He had a hattrick today. He should be ready to go for the upcoming season... :)

Hey, I see out of those little jerseys, 3 are for guys who came from Minnesota, and 4 from Canada. How come there aren't any for anyone who came from North Dakota?

Nobody lives in North Dakota. Any population that state claims is purely an illusion.

He and Budish should be on the WJC team.

Your program wins an NCAA tourney game for the first time, and suddenly you're lecturing us on what our concerns should be?

Yes, 'cause I am saying that now SCSU's hockey history now exceeds that of the U of MN's.

Spin it anyway you want, right now the U is going into the season either ranked 3rd or 4th in the state of Minnesota. And I wasn't lecturing, just pointing out Goldy should keep his focus where it should be.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

IMO Don Lucia's vison and coaching philosophy for student-athletes is second to none.

Our job in college is to educate our players, graduate players and have a successful program. Our job is not a farm team for the NHL. At the same time, I tell kids, I want you to have a great experience, I want you to become the best player you can become. Not every player is going to go to the NHL, and I don't want them to think they're a failure if they don't. For me, it's never been the end all for a kid.

I guess I'm just old school. I believe in education and believe in a college degree, and I believe you can — and many kids prove it — go to college, graduate, then play in the NHL. Even if a guy stays a third year — like (Alex) Goligoski — and has a one year left for his degree, which is a doable.

I whole-heartedly agree, but it may be outdated.

There's the rub.

I know football is a different culture, but for argument's sake, the powerhouses usually don't have a high graduation rate for their football players (since most leave early nowadays, amongst other things).

MN has been a powerhouse traditionally, and now that kids are leaving earlier than before, it may be time to:

1. Switch recruiting strategies and take a bit of a hit (so to speak) in results.
2. Keep the status quo and really take your chances on being a success.
3. Have a hybrid, and hope the good outweigh the bad.
4. Go full out "farm team" for the pros.

I think tDon is trying to accomplish 1 and 3, but due to his personal philosophies, is having trouble adjusting. No shame in that at all. I do want to stress that. However, like you said, it could be outdated, and therefore (to use another word/euphamism) obsolete.

It's a shame, but I think you'll see more of a leveling out of the sport, due to the NHL's cap on rookies (you can only earn x amount, no matter how good you are), the temptation of a sure paycheck now rather than risk an injury and have no paycheck later, etc.

I can't say teams like MTU, {PROVICED, whoever will show up in title games, but more teams like BSU and NMU might.
