Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

No kidding, I don't trust him and it scares the bejeebers out of me to think *if* tDon were to be let go now the replacement would be a Maturi hire.

You want to know the hilarious part about the Softball thing? NDSU has put together a really good Softball team. They win and they go to the NCAA's now consistently the last couple of years.

Minnesota has been close to dead last in the Big 10 in Softball the last few years.

So, Maturi fires them.

However he still can't field a winning Men's Basketball team, nor a winning Men's football team. Hell, his football team lost to NDSU. And the Men's hockey team is falling off the map. So, how did he even have time to notice what the Softball team did?

Yes, I'm bitter. I know the Gopher softball coaches and my daughter learned more at their clinics than anywhere else. Now those clinics are gone. Life sure is funny sometimes.

I don't really follow the basketball team but haven't Tubby's teams made the NCAA's the last 2 years and finished 21-14, 22-11, and 20-14, after being 9-22 the year before he took over? Seems like he's got a "winning" team in just his first few years there.

anyway, who gives a ****, back to hockey.

Yeah, his biggest problem is he can't keep the team out of the Front Page of the newspaper.

A Lucia buyout might turn out to be UMN financial nightmare and mission impossible *if* next season falls flat. The UMN athletic dept. has already borrowed $26M from the UMN over the last five years. Now Smith the "power coach" cost the UMN $1.25M in a civil lawsuit. There'll be more gray hairs for Maturi when Smith looks for a contract extension after next season which may entail a salary increase to keep him at the UMN. John Calipari, who replaced Smith at UK three years ago is making twice as much as Smith now. Add to that the UMN new campaign to raise $20M for a new basketball practice facility in an effort to keep Smith happy and content at the UMN. The UMN must be praying a BTN dividend will help bail Maturi out again.;)

That's ok. He found a way to fire the Softball coaches. He's ON THE JOB.

EDIT: Possible positive changes from last season: 1) no home and home w/ MSUM, SCSU? (haven't released schedule yet) with both series at Mariucci, 2) More home games, 3) Lighter schedule start for first half and milder second compared to last season's "last nails in the coffin" second half (BSU and MTU placed in second half and SCSU and CC move to 1st half), 4) We only play Denver and UND once and MTU twice. This is a tentative schedule so far.

It must really be terrible to be a gopher fan in the Maturi era. Maybe they should fire the whole athletic department and start over. An alternative would be to drop out of the Big 10 and drop down to DII in all sports. Maybe DIII in hockey. I could see them doing really well against St. John's and St. Norbert's. But, wait a minute, they seem to lose against church schools. Oh well...

I'm here to help.

They have managed to win 9 div 1 national championships in the last ten years or so. don't give up hope so fast.

Calipari didn't replace Smith...

Scooby let the friggin softball coach thing go, the team was terrible didnt they win like 6 games? Just because you met them and they were oh so nice to you doesn't mean they should keep their jobs. I met Brewster and he was nice to me, doesnt mean I dont think he should get canned next year when the team sucks. And nice job flip flopping when you were shown to be wrong about Tubby's team. First it was he couldnt win, then it was because the players are trouble makers. Whatever gives you something to whine about right?

Not that I care either way about Maturi, but I find it funny all the people who blame him for everything. I am going to let you in on a little secret, the guy has very little power or control over the teams...he is basically a go between for Bruinicks and Co. and the coaches. Yet somehow Gopher fans blame him for the legislature decision about beer, the basketball players in trouble and his suspension of them, Lucia's team stinking and so on. Blame blame blame, anyone as long as it makes you feel better!

Then why should Brewster keep his job? The hypocrisy is the point. Nothing more, nothing less.

I guess you're giving him a pass. Well, that's fine. And if you're giving him a pass on things then why shouldn't I be upset about the firing of coaches I like?

I guess any passion around here is pointless.

JFR, if Lucia has a bad year the wealthy hockey boosters will fund the buyout, not the University of Minnesota.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

What passion, you just go into every thread about a Minnesota sport and be the wet blanket. That isn't passion it is whining :D

Brew was given a year reprieve because of circumstance, much like a lot of people think Lucia was. The Brewster extension is barely one and if the team stinks this year he will get thrown out on his butt. That is why the buyout is next to nothing.

Maybe it is because I am two continents away right now, but seriously lighten up! You have already written off every team the Gophers have and half the pro teams, dont you think you just might be jumping the gun a bit? ;)

As for Maturi I am indifferent because I dont think he has any real power and most of his bad decisions (like Brew) have been offset by good ones. I just dont think he has any real power and a lot of people seem to scapegoat him when he has nothing to do with it. Since none of us know most of his functions it isnt really our place to rip him.

Wow even St. Clown fans have high expectations. Lets look at the Sears Cup and see how the mighty Gophers are doing.

Sears Cup

2009-10 Division I Winter Standings - 4/29

Institution Pts
1. Stanford 962.00
2. Ohio State 813.50
3. Penn State 726.80
4. Florida 723.00
5. Minnesota 681.75

That is right the mighty Gophers are fifth over all.
Who knew.

I'm not blaming Maturi for problems within the teams, I just haven't seen anything from him to believe he'd make a good hire.

Times have been better for you guys, but just be glad you don't have to change your name along with everything else.

Sucks to be offensive.

And that is fine...but there are some people who will blame him if it is raining at the season opener for football next year because apparently the spineless idiot is smart enough to control the weather ;)

That is why we Gopher fans are funny :)

Hey, if Pelosi can blame Bush for the oil spill.......why not.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Maturi hired Brewster and extended his contract. That's not one but two idiotic decisions. Given the lawsuit judgment + questionable recruiting decisions, I'd say it's time to put Smith on a short leash as well.

Everything is great. Rose Bowl this year, NCAA Final Four, Frozen Four, you name it's all coming.
