Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

It's a bad sign when your most improved D-man is Wehrs while your top three returning scorers either fall off the face of the earth or are injured.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

When I really think about it, how the hell were we anywhere near .500?!
Because it's the Gophers - there's so many built-in advantages to this program that even if half the team is incapacitated for 6 months, they can still manage to be somewhere around .500.

What are these "so many built in advantages" the Gophers have that other teams don't have?

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I don't know if there are any former players who read this who might not be aware, (and I realize that propper protocol might be to start a seperate thread in the Cafe), but just in case, I want to mention a bit of sad news here.

The wife of Grant Bischoff (former Gopher) has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (not a smoker). She is one of the most positive, upbeat, kind, strong and beautiful people you could ever meet. I can't imagine anyone meeting her and not being charmed. There is a Caring Bridge site that has only been in place about a week and it has already had over 18,000 visits (and 70 pages of (over 1000) entries in the guestbook from friends and well-wishers) because she has touched so many people. I am sure that they would appreciate prayers from all of you who pray during these difficult times.

(I have yet to sign on to GPL, but maybe someone could share this on there too.)

You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding.

Top of the line arena, storied tradition, tv market (2008-09 EVERY game was televised, last year, 3/4 were televised), major university, flagship school in the state with FIVE.....FIVE D1 schools, all in the WCHA (that's FIVE out of TWELVE teams), the (arguably) best conference in college hockey from top to bottom......

Need I go on?

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

#2 Jordan Schroeder....-17
#4 Cade Fairchild.....-12

two of the top 3 returning scorers. :( Barriball was the third

#1 Lucia, Sacchetti and Larson (+11,8 & 6)

#3 Wehrs +3

I don't deserve a cookie though, I had to pull up my stat's spreadsheet for Wehrs and Larson.

You're right about #3. Wehrs was the most improved offensive defenseman. He improved his overall point total last season by 28% from 2008-09. He also had the highest SOG% increase over 2008-09 among all defenseman with 68%. Aaron Ness regressed the most among defenseman in SOG from the previous season with -37% and regressed in points by -30%.

On #4, Cade Fairchild's point total regressed -42%, but he was surpassed by David Fischer who regressed -63% in total points from the previous season.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Pardon this BADger intrusion into the rodent offseason, but Eaves hired Bill Butters as an assistant coach. Would you be so kind as to expound on this fellow? Thanks, you stinkin' rodents. :)

See I wasnt sure if you were going by % or actual totals, but I almost said Fairchild depending on the stat you used since he was the worst d-man on the team.

Bill Butters foought the entire CC bench in the 1970's :)

I agree Minnesota has advantages over IN-State schools but you didn't specify that, so no I'm not kidding.
In regards to advantages over OTHER schools in college hockey, I only see one (televised games) As for recruiting, Minnesota has an advantage in getting the metro kids and some of the outstate kids. People forget that Northwestern Minnesota is big Sioux country and regards to the the Sioux they have the Canadian recruiting ties, along with Wisconsin. You could say Michigan has anvantage over us when it comes to the National Development Program since it is in Ann Arbor. BU/BC/UNH has a stong hold on the eastern kids. I know the State of Minnesota produces the most college hockey players in the nation but these other schools also have strong recruiting ties.

As for the Arena, Mariucci is great but UND'S is nicer and has better amenities ( weight room, treadmill pool, etc). Bostun U arena is also very nice.

Minnesota does have great tradion but so does Michigan, UND, Denver, BC (lately) Wisconsin, so I wouldn't say we have anvantage over these schools in tradition/history.

So, we may have one clear advantage over other schools (televised games, although UND is gaining on us with ther contract with FSC ) I just don't see any more we have.
