Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I know there's a schedule thread elsewhere but quick question.....any of you guys know if Vermont may be on the Gopher schedule this year? UVM Coach Sneddon made a comment last year that we'd have a "trip to Minnesota" on the schedule this year. Fans on our thread thought it was UMD as we've had some history playing them, but we don't seem to be on the UMD schedule. (And we're not on Bemidji schedule either). Anything anyone knows about the likelihood of us playing this year would be appreciated.

The only Eastern teams I see on the leaked schedule are Union and UMASS so I'd say it's not likely at this point. Maybe they're talking to Vermont about taking Bemidji's spot at the Holiday Tournament perhaps.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

From the link report, it appears Ryan Walters was asked to be less of an agitator and more of a pure goal scorer. Jacob Cepis has a little of both and that doesn't seem to bother anyone. Hextall seems to do well with the combination. I can't imagine the gritty and successful Gopher teams of the past screening potential agitators that score goals (i.e. Pat Micheletti and a host of others). IMO I would rather see a guy like Ryan Walters agitating opponents and scoring goals than watching the typical small finesse guys get their butts kicked another season. Isn't that why they're bringing in Serratore and Larsen? Ryan Walters improved his game over last year and EXCELLED this season on a crappy team that has missed the playoffs for the two seasons he's played for them.

The fact is Lucia over recruited. Personally I'd like to see Walters play than Serratore.

1) i definitely agree. one such player that comes to mind - Russell Anderson. he went on to have a fairly good career in the NHL as well, albeit more so with the "bruising" side of things.

i vaguely remember someone eluding to Gopher hockey as "finesse hockey" which for the life of me i cannot understand. sure, we don't recruit players specifically to injure those on opposing teams (a la frattin) but past Gopher teams (especially those that won National Championships) were no push overs.

nonetheless, i think a player such as Walters should have been welcomed come this fall. someone to get other teams to take stupid penalties is never a bad player.

2) personally, it seems like both players are what the Gophers need. since i have never seen Walters or Serratore play i cannot say, however, if Walters is in fact a "chirpy" player perhaps the penalties he takes are the "bad" ones.

at the end of the day, the Gophers need some more muscle. they need players like Pat Micheletti and Russell Anderson, of which, i cannot say we had last year or these past few years to be honest. well, maybe Stu Bickel. whatever happened to him anyway!?

In case anyone is interested in attending, Tom Reid is hosting a toast to Frank Mazzocco at Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub this Wednesday starting at 6:00. Its a celebration of Frank's 30 years as a hockey commentator. There will even be a Frank look-a-like contest! That should get some laughs.
Oh, and free Franks (hot dogs) will be served!

Rau to the Gophers?

Boo! Boo!
Nice pickup for you guys.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Good news about Vienneau and Rau. Now they should get someone that handles and develops goaltenders well.

Proves that despite the recent issues, Minnesota can still get the big names they target. Now, what can they do with those guys once they get here? That's the million dollar question I suppose.

You can thank the economic times for Frank's demise. His contract was expensive for the 30 games of just Gopher hockey vs. La Planta's guaranteed contract of working all the Twins, Wolves etc. games FSN North wanted him to cover.

EDIT: Many people inside FSN are extremely unhappy with this decision but after the employees found it was only about money made it harder for them to swallow. "At least I still have a job" someone said. Sad.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Any hardcore trivia fans want to take a stab at this?:) :

1) Who were the top three, most improved, offensive Gopher players in overall point production last season compared to 2008-09?

2) Which offensive player regressed the most?

3) Who was the most improved Gopher defenseman in overall point production?

4) Which defenseman regressed the most in offensive production?

Winner gets a cookie from ScoobyDoo.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I dont care enough to look at the stats, but I would have to think Fairchild is the answer to #4 seeing as he went down in pretty much every stat significantly.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

#2 Jordan Schroeder....-17
#4 Cade Fairchild.....-12

two of the top 3 returning scorers. :( Barriball was the third

#1 Lucia, Sacchetti and Larson (+11,8 & 6)

#3 Wehrs +3

I don't deserve a cookie though, I had to pull up my stat's spreadsheet for Wehrs and Larson.
